Good, fair review. I've got one, and can confirm it's bullet-proof, comfy and stable once in situ, and comes with great customer service. But I find I like it less and less. You can become a "prisoner" of such a heavy box, fishing just pegs where you can park close. Yes, wheel, kits, motors even .... but all that fills the car with junk and adds chores to the freedom of fishing. It's all sharp edges, and I bet you'll soon have barked your shins, scraped the door frames, scratched the floor with those meat-tenderiser feet, and, if you're an 11stone weakling like me, possibly given yourself a hernia or a slipped disc getting it in the boot. After a few years, I only use the basic box without sub-frame, footplate etc, and in lockdown, I got my old Boss Canal Compact plus footplate out of the shed: it's svelte, light, comfortable and portable and I'm wondering why I bought into the idea of an all-singing, all-dancing fishing station that I can barely move. When they describe things as "light" these days, the word has a whole new meaning.

I’ve just bought one and it is easily the best box I’ve ever had and I’ve been fishing for over 45 years so had a few. It ain’t light and there is no way you’re carrying it any distance but with a wheel kit you don’t need a trolley or platform or both so saves space and weight there. I only really fish natural venues and this is as good as it gets especially with the addition of an outrigger for getting into the water. It’s not perfect, nothing is as we all have different tastes, but it’s pretty close for my style of fishing and the venues I fish. Like you mentioned, I’ve completely removed the pole butt support as it’s not needed imo and is a bit of a ball buster. Other than that there isn’t much else I don’t like and it is so versatile in the fact that you can tailor it to fit your needs with the configurations and available extras. It can be exactly what you want it to be. One final point is that the customer service you receive from Rick Tyler is second to none. You really do get that one to one service. Well done on the review Ben as, although obviously owning one I know all about the system, I did actually learn a couple of things I didn’t know or had sussed out so thanks 👍

I bought exactly the same box a couple of weeks ago, same XL tray with lid. I just didn’t buy the wheel kit or bump bar. It’ll go on my Preston trolley and if I need to use a bump bar to fish at 16 metres on a windy day or whatever, I’ll simply use the one I already have attached to the legs at the front of the platform. I can see landing fish with a bump bar beyond this point being a bit of an obstacle to be honest. Not used the box yet because my local fisheries have very kindly shut during lockdown, but I’ve played around with the box so can say it is very good. It’s solid and built to last for a lifetime. All the parts are quality. You might think it’s expensive but my last two boxes have had legs that fell off, wouldn’t let you open drawers when sat on the box, and have let water into the trays. I had to get rid of both which when added up, cost more than this box which is likely to last a lifetime and able to cope with any situation. Some further observations from me..... Set the box to the right height to allow your feet to be flat on the platform with your thighs parallell with the ground for comfort. Do this with the frame only using the allen key. No need for extra trays to be fitted etc to adjust the box height. Once done, there is no further need to adjust the frame. If you get a second pin for the swivel tray, you can fix it into a more permanent position, in a more sturdy way, so it remains accessible at all times and feel 100% solid. With one pin it is less sturdy, though still wouldn’t collapse. If it then rains, take one pin out, and swivel the tray back under the main tray to keep your groundbait dry. The main tray is as solid as a rock, has room for at least 8 bait boxes plus other bits and pieces and needs no additional legs. Takes two seconds to drop into place on your seatbox legs, you don’t even need to secure it futher from there with handwheels, it won’t be going anywhere. No need to fiddle about with lining up holes on the tray to your legs at all, the holes are in the solid frame of the tray, they don’t move! Nothing worse than having adjustable fitments that slide about and cost time setting up before a match. I’ve only just realised (thanks) that you can drop the keepnet attachments onto the top of your legs to screw rod rest heads into for example, but the inner legs are 25mm so you could, as I was thinking of doing, cut down 25mm legs from old seatboxes, fit screw fittings into the ends of them first (you can get Daiwa D25 screw fitting inserts for 25 mm legs), then slide them into your 36mm legs. That still leaves you with three keepnet fittings to attach to your extending frame, so no keepnet bar required unless you need more than three keepnets. With the self made 25mm legs with screw fittings attached, you can then attach a gripper rod rest head and Guru Reaper method feeding rod rest head directly to your legs for when feeder fishing and without needing additional feeder arms etc. The holes on your extending frame, where you would’ve attached your bump bar, are also 25mm so plug in your Guru Reaper rest or equivalent here, with the gripper rest on your middle leg. So, one of the savings from an Octbox is that you need to buy less, and carry less, attachments around with you. No keepnet bar, umbrella arm, feeder arm etc. The box’s versatility is such that you make more use of the box’s inbuilt flexibility. The plastic feet above the serrated metal feet are supposed to work in conjunction with each other. The metal feet dig into soft ground and stop sinking at the plastic feet that are then designed to provide suction, to give an absolutely solid base to your fishing, and that’s basically what you’re buying here. A box for life meeting all needs, cleverly designed, solid, not flimsy, not going to break, made with quality components. It’s a tank. Umbrellas can be secured into the holes on your tray and they don’t budge an inch btw. Alternatively, can be fitted directly into a 36mm leg after removing the 25mm extending leg. There’s enough room in the two 20mm drawers for all your rigs for any given venue on any given match day, but if you’re a match angler who likes to take all his armourery with him, I suggest you take all your other rigs in a separate stacking tray, possibly from your old box. The main advantage with the Octbox is that it is so easy and quick to set up. All your attachments like your pole sock can be left set up on the box when you pack away. At your next match, in just 2-3 minutes, you can have your box fully set up, by just swinging any attachments out into place from last time, and simply dropping your tray on your legs. Your bait can be carried to your venue already in your tray, just drop it on your legs ready to go. This gives more time to plumb up, adjust rigs, do bait prep. I’m not associated with Octbox btw, don’t really know Rick at Octbox, not sponsored or employed by Octbox, I just did a bit of research before buying my new box, and now I have it, can see that I made the right choice. It is heavy though. It needs the wheel kit or a trolley, you’ll not be able to carry it with a strap. I suggest a trolley, not sure you’ll get your pole holdall, rod holdalls, and brolley on the wheel kit in addition to your box, accessories, and other luggage. As for the ball busting pole butt support, it is very solid if you wanted to use it, but rather than take it off if you don’t, and risk losing it or the screws it is attached with, simply reverse it and screw it back in again to avoid singing like Aled Jones if you ram your nads against it. Good piece of kit.

I commented on your Guru box, I’m a disabled angler and I’m on my second Octbox sold my first one for the same as I paid for it and now have the D36 with all the bits you can add. Wouldn’t use any other box as the updates that this box gets is due to Rick listening to feedback from us who buy it and he continues to evolve it each iteration is to improve the whole system. In my personal opinion having used this since it first came on the market there is no contest, end of best box on the market in Europe.

Great review Ben, I’ve had my Octbox for about 2 years now and absolutely love it, they are as you say built to last. The other thing that is well worth mentioning is the customer service from Octbox which is superb. Keep the honest reviews coming and tight lines.

I purchased the D25 last June a lot less expensive than the D36. I had many doubts but It’s actually lighter than my old Preston box. So easy to get level. Set up is easy. I unclip the drawers from frame get the frame level on platform clip the drawers back on. Rock solid, I don’t even use the middle legs. I ditched the ball catcher and had a bench seat made, didn’t get on with the original. I have a 4 wheel barrow system that makes moving it easy. Without doubt the best box I have ever owned.

Thanks for yet another Vid Ben. I thought long and hard and very nearly bought an Octbox, They are brilliantly engineered and I don't agree that they're overpriced. It may well be worth mentioning that the D25 box is a cheaper option and a lot lighter. I believe that the D36 is designed for anglers who visit all kinds of venues whereas if you're predominantly a commercial water angler the cheaper and light D25 is a good option.

Got the d25 just before Christmas all the octbox are superb didn't go for the 36 simply because i don't go into 4ft plus of water and the 25 will go plenty deep enough with the out rigger on and the leg strength is as good as the 36/ check out the leg strength test octbox has on the tube. This was the only box system i was ever going to get new after looking at friends the barrow system is excellent. Simply the best you can get rick is really easy man to do business with

I own a d25, and I can go upto 3ft out in the water and doesn’t move a mm. A d36 is only for those out in high rivers every single week, so a like for like comparison would be a Preston/ matrix box with accessories and a trolley and a platform, you would soon be knocking on 1k. A d25 is also lighter than the absolute and matrix etc It may not look fantastic but it is unrivalled with adaptability, and will outlast all other boxes. Once you’ve used one a few times it’s rare that people go back. Also customer service 5 stars. I had a slight issue with a bait tray once, and I had a new one at my door before I even had a chance to check my email to see if they had replied!! You can also have the standard pole loop on the front if requested.

Good looking Meccano Set. Practical in certain ways yet ponderous and ungainly in others. I also think the weight can become an issue when it comes to the anglers who are lets say are less able than others. I completely agree with how some of the options are attached and positioned. Not the greatest fan of the side tray as it to close to the box. I would also worry about the actual high of the box fully loaded with Rod Bags etc. The other issue I have is the fact that although you have on the one you showed a 2 and a 3 draw stacker I would have preferred the option of single draw and Tray units. Final issue is the price which I feel is on the high side of value. Well presented though.

I've had a Milo m90 for 18 years. It's still perfect. And very very similar to the outbox. These are built to last. Yes some quirks but the quality is superb. You'll defo need a wheel kit. It's enough just to lift it out if the car.

In terms of the better known anglers who use, or who have used the box, off the top of my head....Nick Speed, Dean Barlow, Tom Scholey, Darren Frost I think? After reading some comments I’m thinking Marmite LOL. 😂😂 i.e. you love it or hate it. No probs with hating it though, we all look for different things in a box. I’m looking for something that meets all my needs, will last, is quality, and where the bloody legs don’t fall off.

Spot on. It's the Susan Boyle of seat boxes, very good at what it does, but fugly as hell. It does look like the apprentice has been let loose with some aluminium sheet and a welder. As for the pole support, any further out you'll be on the opposite peg.
