That brings back memories... we used to go up to Ilwaco when I was growing up (early 60s) and go after razors. Didn't have clam guns back then. My Great Grandmother made the best clam chowder. Thanks for the video Nick!!
@mas2472 жыл бұрын
I have my best luck not breaking them by facing the surf while I dig and very slightly angling the handle of the gun away from the surf. You still break one every once in a while. It's nice to go a time like that when they're showing on the sand. They've been closed for a long time, so there should be a lot of them out there. Great video. I need to get out and do some surf perch fishing and clamming- it's been too long.

My brother had the newer vented style gun which have a wider mouth. He might have cracked one. I cracked too many to admit. A new gun might be worth it for the cleanup.

Mmmmm Surf Perch and Clam Chowder. Dice Perch Fillets, Fry in oil, add to chowder last minute. Bounty of creation at your feet, and in the surf. Amazing.

I live in so cal and have never clam fished. You got a nice catch there. Actually, the better clamming for me would be on the central coast. Thanks for showing this. It was interesting.

Murfs Claminator! All stainless steel, has a vent tube that won't clog with sand, lifetime guarantee and made in Oregon! Make sure and get something better than the gun you have. It will leave you high and dry. I had one and a friend has one and both of them had the welds break on the handle to tube connection. Once that happens, they can't make any suction and are done for. I always bring my shovel as backup but I never expect my Claminator to break. Also, when you see a bunch of shows in a small area, just dig them out as fast as you can. I just pull the plug out and go for the next one. I think the longer you wait, the deeper they can dig and they can dig fast!
@anothersomebody8195 Жыл бұрын
I used to do it that way. Now, after the first plunge l, I stick my hand in the hole before checking the tube. I almost always get them now that way.

The hardest part is figuring out what you are looking for, sand shrimp and mole crabs can mess with you. Looks like you figured it out so you should be seasoned expert next time. Tho you may wanna bring a broom stick in the future, good vid!

Hey Nick Brandon here from Astoria seaside Oregon pretty sure you are on one of our local beaches digging clams I must say I'm definitely making clam fritters tonight the best way to clam
@anothersomebody8195 Жыл бұрын
Hey Nock. Does Oregon give digging days by beach a week ahead, or do they just list if a beach is open? I want to go clam, but the ODFW site doesn't list much of anything unlike how Washington does it.

We use those $39.95 BI-MART clam guns. No need for anything more. The trick is learning WHEN to dig, to avoid hurting your back.

What's the reason for tapping the sand? What does that do?
@AnglingAddictsPNW2 жыл бұрын
Hey Kevin! Wish I’d known this before, instead of just walking around aimlessly looking for indicators already in the sand. It disturbs the clams and gets them to move. I found one and after I sucked it out with the clam gun three more tiny holes opened up in the same area.. I found most of mine in a cluster… that tapping goes a long way!! Try it next time and I bet you notice the difference

I really love your channel! You really showcase so much that makes the PNW great. I’ve been clamming since I was a kid, and have used a clam tube exclusively. But, I am tired of broken clams. So this week I am going old school and digging clams like my dad, with a shovel. Their are a bunch of how to videos on KZbin. Check it out.👍👏👏😀

People pounding the sand to get them to show are amateurs. I can recognize the neck hole and just dig.
@anothersomebody8195 Жыл бұрын
You've not dug enough yet then. Experienced people know some days they don't show well, and the tide can come in making it harder. I've had days where I limit in 15 minutes and others where I get a 1/2 limit. For anyone reading, this guy is a young buck tooting his own horn.

@anothersomebody8195 Seriously, if you go to Sunset Beach near Warrenton, OR it really is silly to pound sand in the surf.

Thanks for not sharing the beach name. Seriously. It's always frustrating when everyone finds out about a spot and then it gets over run. If you are where I think you are it already gets pretty busy on super low tides. To not break the shells: don't center the gun over the show (hole), off center it so the gun is closer to the water side.
