For easier navigation, you can find the PGN with all the variations imported on www.patreon.com/hangingpawns Just search for the English or the Anglo-Scandinavian or type "opening" into the search bar and all that are available should be listed there.

Funny side: I have actually had the position at 30:53 on my board in an otb game, but we reached it via the dubious marshall defense: 1.d4 d5 2. c4 Nf6 3. cxd5 Nxd5 4. Nf3 Bf5 and so on. I have also gotten it 4 times online via that move order.

Some interesting analysis of lines I never see playing the English. But, IMO the real value is the idea of fighting for occupation and domination of the center by White, which can often happen in the English and often overlooked that a fundamental if not too obvious idea of the English is to trade a pawn slightly off to the side for the Black center d pawn should Black decide to break in the center with d5 and the pawns get traded. This is a theme that is repeated again and again in this video which is a good lesson to learn for the beginning English player.

Amazing, transitioning to c4 as a mostly d4 player, these lines are super easy and relatively intuitive! I hated d4 because it tends to be too slow and positional (in positions I am uninspired by). C4 allows set ups that I love as a Sicilian player. I didn’t want to get into c4 when I was beginner/early intermediate because it seemed too complicated with too many options. Now however…. This 100% is my play style and most of the starting middle game positions and anti systems are exactly what I have been looking for as I always tend to fall short with 1 d4 but am also not a big fan of 1. E4. Being able to transpose into favorable d4 or Catalan systems as I perfer I feel will give my repertoire a huge boost. Dynamic and positional with an edge in many lines feels very at home, especially as a kings Indian player.

If one wants to play more off beat against the anglo-scandi, it's also good to notice that against 3...Qa5, White can play 4.b4!? (as in the normal Scandi), a fun way to take black out of his comfort zone, specially in fast formats.

@@meepic2553 yeah!, as is the case with many anglo-scandinavian variations, they are just better than their normal Scandi counterparts. The center pawns are just too strong. It's also tricky, i'm confident you can blow many opponents off the board if you study some lines.

Cool. I never bothered to look at the actual theory for the anglo scandi as it's just mediocre and I've had satisfactory success improvising my way through it. Delaying central pawn push is a good idea that I will certainly keep in consideration in future games. Anglo scandi is still fairly popular in bullet at my rating, not so much blitz or rapid.

Good question. Not sure if Qf3 after that would do the trick since attacks f7 and maybe double attack in C6 against King and rook after blacks moves the knight. Just n Idea, not sure if this is the reason

1:52 What exactly does "proper" mean? I have seen people referring to the term often but I have no idea what it is and Google search does not seem to help.

@@theinacircleoftheancientpu492 Thank you. What I was wondering is that since usually adjectives come in front of nouns, if "proper" were to mean "real" as an adjective, it would have come after the name of the opening; such as "Proper Scandinavian" or "Proper Englund Gambit". From what I have seen, it is always the opposite ("Scandinavian Proper"), so I thought that "proper" was a noun chess term that I am yet to learn.

I was surprised that he said that Qd8 was "the least popular move" after 1.c4 d5 2.cxd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3. According to the Lichess database, it is the most common response, accounting for 56% of all games with that position. I tend to filter the results for intermediate players (like me) and no blitz/bullet games, and with that filter, it is 51% of the games, with Qa5 at 19% in second place. If I only look at the Masters database, it does fall to third, but there are only 17 games total in that position, so it isn't very informative in that respect.
