Thank you so much for putting out a video on the english opening, as a player of the english I feel that theres definitely a void of content compared to more common openings, I truly appreciate your video, you've got a like and subscribe from me!

In the patzer realms where I play, I prefer the 2.g3 versions for a couple reasons. The first is that I want to invite black to play 2...d5 because there is a tempting line for black involving recapturing the pawn with the queen that I want black to go for. I want this because black regularly gets greedy there trying to win material and I have extensive prep to punish all versions of that. The second is I also play the hyper accelerated dragon with black and doing both cuts back on the total amount of theory I need to remember for the most part (the extra tempo does make some differences though). An example of the trappy line I want black to play in 2.g3: 1. c4 e5 2. g3 d5 3. cxd5 Qxd5 4. Nf3 e4 5. Nc3 Qc6 6. e3 Bg4 7. Bb5 Bxf3 8. Qb3. Keep in mind you cannot take black's queen right away as you lose too much material in the exchange. It's playable but black is slightly better. On 8.Qb3, delaying capture of the queen, white is considerably better because of Qb7 followup. This is the most dangerous version of this trap. Black can blunder earlier and it's nothing to worry about. Only this move order requires some care on white's part.

ive been having a lot of fun studying the english, if you are a fast player/processor and and a lot of practice in games that arent too long but youre prepared, id advise spamming 2+1 format games just to get comfortable with all of the theory.

In the quiet variation of the four knights. There is an idea that after the bishop takes the knight to take back with the b pawn. The point is that you enter a favorable botvinik system without the dark squared bishop for black that would like to be on c5 controlling the weak dark squares. The downside is that you are down a tempo, but recent top players have been playing this line to great success.

Great video btw, I am forever grateful for these amazing analyses! Just a bit of feedback, the microphone you are using has a really sharp sound, maybe some mic cover would fix up the sound going out. Your voice could sound much more mellow while teaching us. Try to experiment with that. Otherwise great content!!

The Kramnik-Shirov counter-attack is my favourite line against the English opening, yet the line shown is neither the critical nor the trendy one. The main line is: 1. c4 e5 2. Nc3 Bb4 3. Nd5 Be7 4. d4 exd4 5. Qxd4 Nf6 6. Nxe7 Qxe7 7. Bg5 Nc6 8. Qc3 d6 9. Nf3 Be6. The trendy one, and currently my favourite, is something like this: 1. c4 e5 2. Nc3 Bb4 3. Nd5 a5!? 4. Nf3 d6 5. a3 Bc5 6. e3 c6 7. Nc3 Ba7 8. d4 Nd7 9. Be2 Ngf6. If white plays 2. g3, then I am happy to play this: 1. c4 e5 2. g3 c6 3. Nf3 e4 4. Nd4 d5 5. cxd5 Qxd5 which gives black an absolutely comfortable game.

e5 is my main repertoire against the English as black - either going into a Kramnik-Shirov, which I like to play like a reversed Trompowsky or give the bishop up and make a dark-squared wall (ideas which I've seen in a Chess Vibes video) or, against 2. g3, just go 2. ...h5 and poke at the structure immediately with Bc5 and Nc6 d6 or sometimes even c6 d5 to come (an idea which I found in some lichess study). The only problem? I never face the English opening at my level💀
