The whole concept of Angra-Holy Land album is about Brazil discovery by the portuguese. It was musically meant attract people that was not usually into more heavy stuff. As in Brazil heavy is not popular at all. It worked quite well.

The strongest influence in this song is from traditional northeast Brazilian song.

In the begining there's rly a berimbau and other instrument called chocalho (rattle). It's an indigenous origin instrument. Used in some indigenous rituals too.

This song and the whole album are about the discovering of Brazil, in 1500. It kinda explains the name of the album "Holy Land".

Certainly the musical theme of Holy Land (whole album, but this song even more) is Brazilian rhythms. So you can bet that was a berimbau. And an uruá, and a pandeiro and much more, because Angra went "you know what, give me those traditional instruments... They'll make heavy metal now" and someone stupid probably said "no wait, that is for something like samba or coco or..." and they went "THEY MAKE METAL NOW" and pulled it off.

Brazil is the holy land they are referring to... Holy land is a conceptual album about the europeans "discovering" America, particularly Brazil in this case.

You are totally correct. There's a lot of unusual instruments on this song (in the entire album) Angra always put some Brazilian music elements on their songs. And this album is about the great navigations and the discovery of Brasil. So it has a lot of Brazilian instruments and also uses scales and harmonies that are present on Brazilian folk music.
