This syncopated pattern (Bb to C) is a reference to the sound of "berimbau", a instrument used by ancient slaves to dance to the "capoeira", a unique dance / fighting style that was forbidden by the portuguese. This instrument is still used in the "rodas de capoeira" or capoeira dancing gatherings - wich was a outsider dance / fighting style until de 1900's. So I never had people to go to shows with, and I was never the type of person to go to a show alone. It's one of my regrets that I never got to see some of these bands in their prime when they were touring (though fortunately I've been able to see Dream Theater several times now). And yeah, that late 90s Shadow Gallery really was a talented group. It's a shame that they never got label support to tour, as they probably could have built a nice following. But then with Mike dying, it just was never meant to be. And I'm super jealous that you got to see Andre, though the circumstances are too bad.

It was such a pleasant and exciting surprise to find your reaction to two Angra songs, found on Holy Land album. It means a lot to us Brazilians, especially those who lived at that time, who got excited about those young guys simply using their talent and culture to make music different from the standards. Sadly, but somewhat comforting, there has been a late recognition and dissemination of these works, triggered by the early death of vocalist Andre Matos in 2019. Owner of immense musical knowledge, classical formation, differentiated and unique voice, stage performing compared to the best front leaders, Matos was and will always be very important for Brazilian Heavy Metal. The track Nothing to Say (also on Holy Land) is something that might interest you, as are other compositions and performances found on Shaman's albums (Ritual, Reason) and Andre's solo career (Virgo, Time to Be Free , Mentalize, The Turn of the Lights). We feel very proud and miss him, for his dedication, talent, humility and, of course, amazing songs. Matos would be completing 50 years of life on 09/14/21 when the documentary "Andre Matos o Maestro do Rock" will be released, telling and eternalizing his entire trajectory.

Angra has 3 major phases. Power metal with the first formation, symphonic/power with Edu Falaschi/Aquiles Priester/Felipe Andreoli years (Rebirth to Aurora Consurgens), progressive metal (with Fabio lione/Bruno Valverde, Marcelo Barbosa). All albums are good and bring something to the table. In the beginning, just like sepultura, they brought a lot of brazilian music and rhythmic patterns to the arrangements, which gave the band an unique feel. ANGELS CRY, TEMPLE OF SHADOW, OMNI are good albums for all periods. also, ANDRÉ MATOS, R.I.P..

Happy to see my contry here, been following your videos for a while now :) André Mattos was often called "the maestro", he is a legend and I was very hearthbroken when we lost him a couple of years ago. You should definetly check other works by him, both in Angra and in Shaman, and also further works by Angra (the Albuns Rebirth and Temple of Shadows are my favorites). Comments are full of nice suggestions :)

I've waited so long for a reaction to Angra! Thank you, Doug! Would love to see you react to Fairy Tale, by Shaman - Andre's band after he left Angra

Angra have always been a bit of a blind spot for me. I remember my guitar teacher in high school showing me a Kiko Loureiro instructional video, and me being really impressed and going downloading a load of their albums. I think the problem was it really wasn't what I was expecting it to be, like much less shreddy. When I later got into power metal they were a name that cropped up a lot so I tried again, but again because they aren't typical of that style it just wasn't what I was looking for. Listening again now for what is probably the be first time in 15 years I can definitely appreciate it more than I did (or at least this song), but I'm still not entirely sure they're a band I'll go out of my way to listen to on the regular.

Hey Doug, Welcome to Angraverse (universe of Angra)! A place were we have a lot of bands and projects from Angra's members and ex members. The next react should be the song For Tomorrow or Over Your Head from Shaman.

My favorite band of all time! They definitely put a lot of care in their compositions, even for simpler tracks, which makes sense with the musical background of the composers that contributed the most (bittencourt, matos and loureiro) and each album proposes something different. The whole holy land album is absolutely fantastic and I think is the most unique regarding their approach to composition. Overall their style shifted over the decades and three main lineup changes, and their more recent two albums while enjoyable lack a bit of personality and consistency, but I am always excited to see what they'll do next!

Also, I'd say Temple of Shadows by them is probably one of the best concept albums I have ever heard, beaten maybe only by Metropolis pt2. If you decide to do another long listening session, this should absolutely be at the top of your list (although you may have to ready your ear for some double bass drumming).
