For the water coming in: Don't: Sealing the bottom of deck (or in this case, porch) boards is generally a no-no because it usually results in either standing water or soaked wood that has no way to breathe out the moisture. In the porch's case, if you sealed the bottom and the seal wasn't perfect all the way around, you'd get some quick rotting anywhere there was a ding in the deck board. I see in your first vid that the exterior of the porch has metal flashing where the siding meets the porch carpet. I grew up in a house where the basement was underneath the porch, but the porch was recessed into the house so only the front was exposed. iirc, it had boards that were sealed and painted, then my dad switched to an outdoor carpet. We never had leaks that I remember so maybe it's all about keeping the top and edges sealed and if you get a leak that means it's time to reseal. Disclaimer: woodworker and general diy-er / never messed with porches it's all old memory and conjecture. Gotta be hundreds of carpenters watching "this old crack house". Hope you get your hands on something more solid. . . . . like THIS SHAFT, grunt shit. Squids represent. . Really though - love the vids, man.
@gregkrueger3313 жыл бұрын
The space under the porch was meant to be drafty (dry) and cold/cooler. It served a few different purposes. Because it was cold and dry it used as a root cellar. It’s also a means of keeping airflow to dry out the damp basements. They’re never under a deck, only covered porches. The floorboards were usually hardwood or old growth pine and tongue and groove.

No man, there a lot of work to be done but overall that house has a lot of potential. I've partaken in rehabbing houses that were in worse shape. Think he paid what, $40k? He's got the basement repaired now, don't think the roof was in too bad a shape. He gets the HVAC taken care of and he'll have the big three out of the way and then its mostly just trim paint and caulk lol
@solocao93394 жыл бұрын
@@17Scumdog potential to waste money? I need the logistics, where's the house located? Is it good neighborhood? Are the neighbors quiet at night? Curb appeal, Kitchen appeal, Bathroom appeal, stuff like that. Theres a reason the house was auctioned off. You'd think you'd be getting a deal but you'll be putting more money in the pot than you'll be pocketing. Then get endorsement from an inspector, did you install plumbing right? Is there trip hazards? Is the electrical done properly, stuff like that. Some of it takes time other requires stupid permits so you can be taxed. All in all, freeholders tend to know this and they just rent the houses to tenants so they can get accumalitive money, However, in real estate there's a negative to it, sometimes you get squatters, crackheads, people with mental problems like dimentia and what-not. Just like you, I've seen, smelt, touch, and very rarely taste it BION(the atmosphere reeks of greasy hair you can taste it). I worked with some tight wads but this owner(who puts it up for rent) asked if he could take the removed carpet to the car wash to hose it down, and that's one of my facepalm moments. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKrdln5qmJ6Ma8k. Had to explain to this guy there is no way your shampooing that much dog pee out of this carpet lol! Hey! I can actually help with something! For your porch/basement leak issue: A) It's a little expensive as far as paint goes, but there's some stuff you can get (I think it's called "Deck Correct" at Home Depot). It's basically grit/sand suspended in really thick paint, used to seal in old decks. It can fill holes/gaps up to 1/4 or 3/8 in (something like that) and makes old, pitted wood look smooth and slightly sandpapery (good grip). B) Or caulk and paint? I'm not sure how big the gaps are that are allowing water in, but if it's kinda what I'm thinking, those could work. Then again, I'm from Texas, and have no idea how the cold of NY would effect those solutions. :P Good luck, sarge! Keep making progress and I'll keep watchin!

I converted my 3000 sqft house and went from a $400 a month heating bill to a $60.00 a month bill. “Basement Jesus would say it flooded for forty days and forty nights.” I don’t know how, but the entire Biblical narrative is taking place in trying to restore this house: It was built (Genesis), it went downhill fast (Genesis-Deuteronomy), it got worse (Joshua-2 Chronicles), You Bought it and inspected it (Ezra-Malachi, including prophecies of the Savior), You found basement Jesus (birth of the Savior), He left for awhile (crucifixion?), and now He’s back (resurrection). "...everyone decides to chop away the beams that hold up the house." We see that a lot in the architecture profession, not just in crack houses. If you're concerned with rain water coming through the porch floor into the basement, you might want to coat the top of the porch floor with a wearable waterproofing coating. Its hard to tell without actually seeing the situation. DO NOT install a waterproofing coating on the underside - water will just go through the floor and get trapped at the underside and cause the porch floor to rot.
@peterbills41294 жыл бұрын
Yeah, he has to look at the porch floor as if it's actually a roof. Something you could "paint" or apply to the top of the deck would be the most economical approach. I have a flat walk out roof on a portion of my home and had a contractor pitch me a product that was a super thick and durable rubber roofing material. I wanna say it was 120 mil. He took a sample out of his truck, stabbed it with a knife, and couldn't penetrate it. Very durable but costly. It looked like and felt like PVC but was still plyable. Commercial grade product designed for high wear.
