Origins had a good story. Odyssey, while not regarded as a AC game, is regarded as having a good story and being a really good RPG. I haven't played any of their other single player games of late other than AC and the new Prince of Persia. I love that game but the story, while it isn't bad, is just ok. It's not bad like I said. Enjoyable but not something I recommend for the story or even having to pay attention to it's story at all.

I mean, like it or not Joe, the backlash Ubisoft is getting is completely deserved and justified because they are *deliberately* passing over well known historical ninja for a pretty obscure person only because he was a dark skinned African. What they should've done was to have the game actually focus on one of the most legendary ninja like Hattori Hanzo and maybe have the kunoichi character be like his wife or daughter or something, and then have Yasuke be a secret character that's unlocked after yo beat the game or something like that.

Yasuke is a servant, a slave and a sword bearer to Oda Nobunaga. In no way is he a samurai. When Oda died by assassination, Yasuke wonder Japan alone and die never to come home (Africa). As for the Iga, yes, Oda hates them and annihilate them. Oda also hated the Portuguese because of opium and therefore kill many missionaries and converted Japanese Christian which led to Opium War in Japan (Not China yet and that is a different story). That is historical correct. The battle tactics of Nobunaga on that scene is inaccurate of shooter volleys as Nobunaga have put trenches with spikes, wooden opening fences for the gun to point out. In the mist of that formation, Nobunaga put crossbow, bowman, and spearman to protect the gun bearers. This is to thwart calvary charges. As an Asian, I am excited for representation of Asian culture but put in a Black man as a main character in the East is disrespectful. I would expect an Asian man. If I were to say that the British King is an Asian man, I would be disrespecting the culture of the British. I like reading history as a hobby myself.

Yasuke was given the title of Samurai by Nobunaga. One didn’t have to necessarily have to be appointed, or “knighted” the traditional way to become a samurai at the time. The simple fact that he was a weapon holder and simultaneously a body guard for Nobunaga stands to contest that very claims that he was never given the title. There’s also various accounts of his battles. Just because he wasn’t viewed as the traditional samurai he certainly wasn’t just a mere servant. Also, I’ve yet to find a single source that confirms Yasuke’s status as a mere weapon’s bearer. Yasuke was also never given a short sword, but a Koshigatana. That’s a misconception due to the mistranslations of Louis Fruis’ letter.

Reminder... Samurai is caste system. You can't become samurai without being adopted to samurai family or marrying samurai. It's tied to bloodline and family name. Since Yasuke doesn't have surname, then he can't be samurai. Because if one without surname would become one... They would be granted surname.

There's evidence that Yasuke did body guard work in India before arriving in Japan with the Portuguese. Retainers were also often employed for military tasks. There's Japanese artwork from the period of a black man in upper class Portuguese clothing which Thomas Lockley (associate professor of history at Nihon University Tokyo) suspects is of Yasuke which suggests that he must have been relatively wealthy and well connected. All this information can be found easily but it seems like most people have done no research and are just making a big deal out of the fact he wasn't officially a samurai. What people really should be angry about is the stupid pricing that Ubisoft is setting a precedent for.

It's not that I'm opposed to Ubisoft using Yasuke, but the way they marketed him feels like they just want to earn some brownie point (or blackie points in this case, pardon my insensitivity). Imagine if they restrict him in stealth and social stealth because he's black. Yasuke could provide an outsider's perspective on the Sengoku era but being Nobunaga's retainer at best and being a historical figure who disappeared from history (they will probably explain this as Yasuke being recruited by the Assassins) and Shadows being the franchise's first mainline game set in Asia, he shouldn't be a main character. A supporting role like Adewale, maybe, or just a character in a sidequest.
