The two changes I think would fix MOST of the tech world: 1) Prohibit changes to the Terms of Service after someone agrees to them and pays. If someone subscribes on January 1st, then they are locked into the ToS of that time. The company can't go "We're altering the deal, now take it or leave it.". Especially when they alter it within the subscribed time period. I get that a company may need to alter those terms over time, but a deal is a deal. If I buy a license to use a game, and then a month later I'm told "You now need to let us stare out your webcam constantly or you can't play anymore", I need some recourse to prevent that while letting me use the original services... or receive a refund with penalty to discourage such behavior on the company's part in the future. 2) Right to Repair. 'Nuff said.

If the company changes ToS and the user is given the option to leave, then the user should also receive a refund on a pro-rata basis. The loophole that these companies use is by adding a clause that they can change ToS at will at anytime. Adding such clauses should be prohibited by law.

Totally agree with you on the TOS. I don't understand why as a consumer I have to be held accountable to a contract, but as a provider they can do whatever the hell they like. My bank recently rejected a request from me to make a loan scheme more tenable for me, stating that my income was too low (what?!) and that we had a contract, but then increased my repayments by €100/pm. A contract should be a contract and that's it. They should not be allowed to sucker you in with good terms until their competitors dissappear and them turn around and give you the shaft, which seems to be exactly the way that companies are behaving these days.

The actual ruling on this case is a bit misleading. Yes, Google is considered a monopoly, but it doesn't state explicitly how the companies should be broken up in the ruling. I think this will drag on and I'm sure Google will end up paying a fine and go on about business as usual. Plus, as Fireship pointed out, this may end up benefiting Google because they no longer need to pay Apple or Samsung for revenue share. Google is still the search engine and browser of choice for many folks, and people will continue to install Google Chrome as their default browser when they purchase Microsoft OS laptops. This may be more of an accomplishment checklist for politicians.

Exclusivity deals may be used to drive away the competition but the choice to whether you accept the terms offered is voluntary and therefore free. So having the DoJ or the EU slap a fine for antitrust is not capitalism or a free market but rather a government or branch of government deciding they don't like the freedom of a business to set their terms of use. This is not a good precedent.

Natural monopolies or oligopolies do not prevent anyone from doing so, and considering nobody is forcing anyone to buy an iphone or preventing the creation of their own phone or from using or develop another search engine the monopolies of big tech software are most often more natural than not. Unlike pharma or healthcare or banks or insurance or energy which are packed with regulations and mandatory licenses and requirements, if people use a Mac it is because they choose to. I don't like Apple products because I think they are overpriced, are barely customizable and because they are more than willing to milk me for money. But nobody is forcing me to buy their products.
