"An idiot admires complexity, a genius admires simplicity." Joking aside, I really think this is something every new programmer should hear, and I firmly believe Terry hit the nail right on the head with that one. The point of programming is to do things more efficiently, so don't try to over-complicate things when you really don't have to.

While there's an element of truth, I think it's overrated though. True high efficiency virtually never appears globally simple, at most only locally.

We had a guy who was the low-level library guru for the company. We rolled all our own libraries. No C++ standard library for anything. So, naturally, we had to have our own optimized string comparison function. Fast forward to a year later when an obscure bug starts causing string comparisons to match with the wrong arguments. You ask for one thing by name, and you get something else. Since this was in code I was working on, I had to try to fix it. The thing I realized was that the two strings that were incorrectly matching were always 16 bytes long. So, I decided to look into our string comparison code. And that's where the bug was. Some edge case or an off-by-one error. I forgot what it was. For that day, I was the guru.

I got history in customer support back in the 90's. We had to understand what was under the hood on the products to be able to help in many cases. I can still to this day, casually walk up to a new app or system and figure out what's wrong becuase nothing has truly changed since then. ux's has just had yearly face lifts.

I have a farm too, in two different countries, staffed by other people of course, no profits but lots of fun (sheep, goats, fish). I hobby code and still do sometimes (learning Rust now, but after a couple of months I'm bored of it, having done everything except asynchronous programming, and CLI coding bores me compared to C#/WPF, even if the latter has more memory leaks). I worked in Silicon Valley in the 1990s in business development but I made my big money the old fashioned way, I inherited it.

I might be the first person in the company to interact with people from the production lines as an engineer. Normally there is a clear non communication attitude between engineers and the rest. Production people are working so relaxed, daily meetings are chill, problems are fixed in a relaxed way, nobody blames or flexes on each other, it is a fun environment. They are joking around, always playing music, more chatting with each other and socilizing. Engineering on the other hand, is very quiet and serious. People take their work very seriously. They mostly interact with each other on-a-need basis or meetings. How their managers are gonna react is always taken into account when doing something. The hierarchy is obvious, no matter how 'flat' the hierarchy it is. You are always being judged on how productive you are, story points, meeting the deadlines, going beyond your responsibilities is considered a standard and positive point. Saying this is not my job is a negative point. If you are gonna object to something, you need to choose your attitude and words really carefully. This was a huge culture shock for an intern who started in production then switched to product owner after her studies are finished. I guess that is the price for a some more salary and a relatively more job security.

It's not true though, i.e impostor / superiority syndrome. I've been at the game for +-16yrs. I really don't care what anyone thinks about my code. Even if a junior catches a bug I missed, great! We need all the eyes we can get on a problem! If someone senior... same thing. If they show me a tool I wasn't aware of, great! Learning never ends! And I treat juniors with just the same respect as I treat seniors because "senior" is just a function of time. The juniors have the same level of ability to learn as me and will soon catch up so I can't brag about being further from being junior than them... it's dumb.

I think if you are BS'ing thru meetings the label "senior" no longer applies. My view is that as a senior what you are being counted on to do is provide guidance. You've seen trends, you have been on different projects and used technologies and processes... all of which should help you in meetings, to say "guys, that's a bad idea... because ....". I actually never appreciated the value of experience until I was experienced and saw the difference between how I see problems from a mile away compared to a junior who can't. The reason I can see so far is because "been there, done that"! It really isn't because I am smarter, I just have memories a junior has not yet had a chance to acquire. @@ThaJay
