There's more to it than just this episode. Remember the one where Paul brought the paper on with headlines about it? The floor manager took it off him, then Paul pulled out a second one. When this was taken off Paul, he then revealed he had printed it on a t-shirt he was wearing.

@@ScrungoJones No, you're right. Paul suddenly popped up a copy of his book Silent Comedy. They took it off him. He took out another copy. They took that one too. He then revealed the shirt. (In the Angus episode, it was Ian who brought the copy of the newspaper. Paul didn't have one. Paul only revealed the shirt with the printed cover that he was wearing under his hoodie in the final round.)

The title is a bit misleading, it's not the big scandal episode with the newspaper cover. This is from the start of the next series: Angus and his agent had promised the producers there were no more scandal stories available and he managed to keep his job. Only for another story to break at the start of the next series. Paul and Ian didn't hold back at all this time, obviously because Angus had blatantly lied to the makers of the show. After this came the final stab in the form of Christine Hamilton ("If my husband's disgraced, then what are you?") and Angus was out. I almost wanted to write the 'second' scandal, but I've heard of an even earlier one in the BBC2 years of the show. That one seemed to have gotten less coverage, though Paul apparently made some references to it on the shows around that time.

Angus was the news at the time. So it was hard for him to continue on tbh as he was obviously going through a rough patch. I know him and Merton aren't friendly but it would be interesting to bring him in as a guest host. Compared with scandals in subsequent years, ahem. Problem is however Angus refused to take part in the 30th anniversary documentary a few years ago, so he might not want anything to do with HIGNFY.

To be fair to the team, they tried to continue with Deayton for a while, but it was hard to parody public figures when the host was a parody himself. As Paul Merton said: "The person in the middle can't do jokes about Jeffrey Archer if people then say 'yes, but what about you?'". It all fell apart when Deayton got slaughtered by Christine Hamilton of all people. He wasn't fired directly because of the scandal, but because his continued presence made the show untenable.

Yes, it was a combination of things - Christina Hamilton complaining afterwards about the joke, Angus repeatedly being the subject of the news instead of the commentator, more stories exposed more him when he told the producers there was nothing more, etc. Christina did say she felt bad afterwards and sent him a letter of apology, though she got no reply back. Angus did say the whole truth about his sacking was not revealed but after so much time passing, nobody would remember everything behind the scenes so who would know what really happened. At the time, they just couldn't continue with Angus especially as Paul and Ian repeatedly targeted him. I remembered watching it overshadowing anything else that happened on the show. Actions have consequences but he paid for it a long time ago.

@@Kate-lk6tw Boris was a guest and a figure of fun for Ian and Paul to attack. Even as a special host, Boris was ridiculed but that was what drew people to the show. Angus however was THE host. Paul Merton said later in an interview that Angus had promised that there wasn't anything more after the first scandal broke, they absolutely ribbed him for it and thought it could then be put to bed. And then it turned out that there was more, and everything was now just about Angus and not about politics. So it was him or the show. Comparing it to Jimmy Carrr's tax scandal, he was also torn to shreds, but that was it, he paid the money back and there was no further scandal. The tone in this clip really shows how much Ian and Paul wanted him out, they could no longer trust that it wouldn't just be Angus the centre of attention in any given week.

Plus, he made a comment about Christine Hamilton's disgraced politician husband and she fired right back with something to the effect of "If he's disgraced what are you?" At that point, it was made clear that Angus' own scandals were a detriment to calling out politicians for corruption and sleazy behavior. Quite frankly, I don't have a lot of sympathy for Angus. To be in the public eye, on a major program and then get yourself caught up in sex scandals just showed a major lack of judgement, if not morals. I don't care what you do in your private life, provided it is consensual; but keep it private. Angus was reckless with his private life and he paid for it. As said, Jimmy Carr had his tax trouble and he owned up to it and made restitution and hasn't had any further mishaps. Angus wasn't exactly contrite about things, offering as his best defense that some things in press articles were distorted or incorrect, but not everything. Hugh Grant owned up to his pecadillos, years back and demonstrated that he knew he acted like an idiot and learned from the experience. People moved on. I;m not saying Angus should have done decades of penance; but, he didn't help his situation, then.
@pete1942
@pete1942 Ай бұрын
@@jeffnettleton3858He was reckless, but, if not all the accusations were true, it would have been very difficult for him to defend himself. Saying ‘yes I had an affair but no I didn’t do drugs’ for example is not going to win anyone over. And admitting to everything if it’s not true is not going to be anyone’s first choice. On the flip side, he didn’t suffer as badly as some people think. He lost the HIGNFY gig, but carried on working afterwards including for the BBC. In interviews he’s said he always found it funny that people would talk about his ‘comebacks’ because in his words, he never went away. Different world back then though. These days, that sort of behaviour won’t stop you becoming PM.

To follow on with the Jimmy Carr comparison, you can see Deayton is uncomfortable and feels picked on and wants to change the subject away from himself. Carr on the other hand was advised by a producer to suck it up on the night, and had a good laugh about it in front of the cameras and still references it in his act today. Also Carr didn't try to damage limitation any revelations, but Deayton did to Hislop, Merton and the production, instead of coming clean.
