Anicka Yi creates intensive, sensory experiences using biological manipulation and living organisms. Smell is a major component in her work, as are the narratives behind the unusual materials she combines into disturbing, foreign combinations. In her piece Grabbing at Newer Vegetables, she collected bacteria from 100 female acquaintances to create a single female super-bacteria, as a testament to the biological networks that exist beneath our social reality. Her unusual art materials include Girl Scout cookies, batteries, ants, oxytocin-injected snails, and recalled powdered milk. Creators met Anicka to discuss the selection process behind her materials and subject manner, and how she uses them to create art that makes us aware of the uncomfortable, biological, repressed parts of human existence.

I have always believwd that there was potential into creating art with smells and im happy that someone made this idea true, but it definitely needs more development and to be focused as a new medium of art.

Very impressive art! Not just the idea of the smell but also how it looks.

Fascinating, beautiful, and disgusting all at the same time. In other words, a pretty accurate representation of life itself.

Art Enthusiast: Oh wow, what is this? Anicka: Have a sniff or two. Pungent isn't it? Art Enthusiast: Yeah, almost teared me up. What is it? Anicka: It's just bacteria collected from 100 different females, bacteria included from female genitalia, put all into one soup for inspiration of ebola virus.

Very interesting. It is sad that it is 2017 and people still have not understood that art is not meant to always be visually beautiful, the ugly and the unsettling is part of the art as well. Can't find the beauty in this kind of art? stay in the generic people who can only handle van gogh, michelangelo, da vinci, the beatles, elevator music, coca cola, flavourless gelatin etc...

there's absolutely nothing wrong in disliking ANY artist, i was talking about the incapacity of find beauty in art that is not obviously directed to aesthetic.

is hard to explain this kind of concept to a brain that is stuck in the XVIII century, but basicly art can be about expressing the author's imaginative OR technical skill and is intended to be appreciated for their beauty OR emotional power OR idea represented.

Not exactly sure why someone would feel "uncomfortable", with their _chosen_ profession.

Where do I sign for a job like that one?

Nabil Touchie well you'd probably want to go to art school, then intern with a sculptor, then spend years building relationships with art dealers while using the rest of your time on your work. If you're lucky then you might have forged enough of a reputation to make some sort of a splash in the art world if you wanted to be prolific you'd need to spend your whole life dedicated to maintaining and building your reputation. Ultimately you'd probably make more money with less time in a more conventional job.

It's not a job. You're not working for someone. You're free and deciding your own income, point, schedule, meaning and influence.

This legitimately could have taken a very interesting turn imo!!! Bad smells, or even good ones, can represent things like words can't. Like a disease, death or even the warmth of your home. It's a shame that an idea like that would never come to fruition, just to be on the spotlight. Just to be relevant with all this feminist bullshit.
