Mafias get started by doing gofer and gig work for other unscrupulous crews or individuals. This allows them to build capital and networks with other criminals until they have enough critical mass of funds and rudimentary organization to build new cartels. The Italian Mafias (Cosa Nostra, Camora, and Ndragheta) were originally militias set up to resist intrusion by outside empires. The Mexican cartels were originally for-hire muscle used by political clans to intimidate rivals. Chinese Triads were formerly Anti-Manchu rebels formed from street toughs and other despised minority groups. The only issue with these new criminals is finding larger markets beyond their current economic base. Most modern mafias did this by accessing illegal markets for contraband and through questionable overlapping ties with legitimate organizations that tolerated their activities for mutual benefit. These new Japanese criminals don't seem to have either the markets or the legitimate connections to permit growth into major players.

In these comments many people assume the fall of the yakuza but I think they are looking at things the wrong way, it is true that the yakuza is not what it was but to say that it is weak or ending is a naive mistake. I spoke in a post here about the semi-gangs or hangure and many people think that they are taking the place of the yakuza but no, they end up being practically an organization that does services and pays for the yakuza and as the law is much less severe for non-yakuza organizations they end up having a larger membership, but if you look at it the leaders always end up being executives of the yakuza. I think it's very wrong not to expect that most of these organizations don't pay or don't have some kind of connection with the yakuza, and I even think that it's the yakuza who organize anonymous groups. It's true that the yakuza is not what it used to be, it's changing and taking new forms perhaps losing some traditions and moving towards a more underground organization. Yes, because there are more and more unregistered yakuza members. Being a yakuza by law is no longer attractive, so they're changing the rules of the game.

@@aceloco817 The statistics show that there are around 22,400 members of the Yakuza, but these are statistics and we can expect either more members or even fewer due to people who have left or are not really active, since in 2022 30.8% of the registered Yakuza were in their 50s and 60s and around 10.7% were over 70. However, the police estimate that there are around 4,000 semi-gang members, but we can expect more since you don't need a clear affiliation to be a member. And most of these organizations work with or have connections to the yakuza, so we can estimate that there are 4,000 members aged 40 or younger working with the yakuza. I do not have age statistics for the hangure, but it is mostly people in their 20s and 30s. as for the anonymous/mobile criminal groups or TOKURYŪ "in March 2024, the total number of people arrested in the three years from 2021 to 2024 exceeded 10,000 and investigations are being stepped up" and if you think that the yakuza or hangure didn't participate in these then you're wrong. What I'm getting at is that even if a person isn't directly involved with the Yakuza, we can expect that there are many more people connected to it without being directly linked.

I think the tokyryu just gave a lifeline to the Yakuza, it’s a tailor made solution to the two main problems the Yakuza currently face 1: harsh government crackdowns and 2: dwindling membership. Tokyryu is the underworlds version of a gig-economy, one that a shrinking Yakuza could benefit from and the members are anonymous and have no connection to each other which makes cracking down that much more difficult, and there reach is no longer limited to a particular prefecture or city, If the Yakuza play their cards right this could be an evolution more effective, elusive and insidious than what they were before. A 16 year old school girl in her uniform could be planting a pipe bomb for the Yakuza (not that they use that method much)
@petergray27125 ай бұрын
There are three trends that are already extant that could make this a reality: 1. The Yakuza are already using Tokuryu inspired phone and internet scams from domestic boiler rooms. Most of the workers employed are Non-Yakuza Japanese. 2. Black Companies. These are corporations that generally don't comply with Japanese labor and health laws that basically enslave their workers. It's not much of a stretch to use these companies (which use gig worker part-time contracts for hiring) to recruit workers into clandestine criminal work. 3. Japan's large sex industry. Japan has a large informal sector exclusively for sex work, employing a significant number of undocumented female gig workers. Most of this work relies upon internet and social media for recruitment and advertising, as well as anonymous dispatch of sex workers and for payment. Many Tokuryu masterminds actually got started as pimps and virtual sex club owners, before migrating to fraud and more violent crimes.

What's ironic is, back in the 1900s the Yakuzas were, while obviously being a criminal organizations themselves, kind of a underworld closers whose existence itself was like a deterrent to other criminal gangs because, simply put, nobody would fuck with Yakuzas. They were keeping thugs and delinquents in check while committing crimes themselves. They'd be basically like "Who the fuck do you think you are committing crimes in MY criminal turf!?!?!?!?" But now, it's kinda like how the world destroyed Ghaddafi and Libya had became a complete shitshow, a breeding ground for the most extreme of all terrorists. Like, I get it that he had to go but, at what cost?? Also there's that, they had this kind of moral code where they don't really mess with civilians unless they either had to or wanted to or had reasons to like they owed them money or smt. It's not like a strict rule but, rather like it's "un-cool" as a Yakuza to unwarrantedly bully ordinary citizens and Yakuzas USED TO hate being un-cool so there's that.

I’ve noticed a massive uptick in the petty BS crimes in Japan. I’ve lived here half my life, having moved from America. I used to say I wouldn’t worry in the slightest walking around alone at night here, and while I’d still feel safer doing so here…well? Now, I’d feel a lot less safer. I sure wouldn’t do it alone, when I had no problem doing so when I first came here. Japan is on a very quick downward slide. Time has caused morals and values to slide. There’s been a sharp rise in burglary, purse snatching, trafficking, the “oreore” phone scandals, murder, you name it, it’s happening. Kids aren’t allowed to play outside alone anymore unless both parents work, and the issue is that, well? Times are so hard that more and more families are being forced to have most parents work, and a lot of the time it’s with both parents working multiple jobs. Pair it with the amount of online crime, (the amount of scam mails that come to everyone’s phone these days, DUDE, even the phone calls wtf), and it’s just… Wild. Japan is NOT the super safe nice country it was. Also these Tokuryu are working with the Hangure, to work with the Yakuza. When I read "Tokuryuu" I thought it would be written with the kanji for "special" and "dragon", making it "特竜". I wonder if you would make an analysis on the criminal syndicate in Lost Judgment called RK, which seems to fit the term of Tokuryuu.

Over the past 25 years, the Yakuza's influence has diminished to symbolic proportions. I've been following this process with interest. It got to the point where ordinary members of some gangs had to steal food to feed themselves; but it was clear from the start that there was to be a new phenomenon in Japan's criminal world. As we Russians like to say: a holy place is never empty.

Kind of dissappointed to see comments saying Yakuza are so honourable...are you joking? Yakuza do some crazy immoral stuff that is just as violent and unethical. Their treatment and entrapment of young women especially is absolutely heinous. They aren't better, they are just different, neither are preferable, they are both criminal gangs who cause harm to people.

Yakuza could basically hire someone to hire other people to do crimes for them. Basically, the people who do the crime would never know that they are doing it for the Yakuza. So i would see the Yakuza using TOKURYŪ for their benefit. An animal will fight twice as hard when cornered

This is just like the episode ‘Shut Up and Dance’ in Black Mirror (season 3). The only difference is that it’s not blackmail (supposedly) but the promise of quick cash. I’m just really glad I haven’t encountered something like this yet myself. In my home turf of Southeast Asia, job scams are pretty popular. You apply for a job somewhere abroad for lucrative pay and then get kidnapped and stuck in a prison-like compound. Your passport gets stolen, they beat you up and you have to run scams for a living (like gambling and dating scams). It sucks that crime takes advantage of young people as usual.

Oh that's cold, they're just playing the odds. Putting together a heist crew, but deliberately picking amateurs. That's a pretty unusual pattern, but I kinda get it. Likely high rate of failure, but good security for the mastermind; win some, lose some.. but who cares, it's only the amateurs going to prison if it goes wrong, not you.
