I have a permanent ache in my heart laced with deep regret and guilt about a horse named Tonka that I was given by my father as a child. Not only didn't we have the property or the financial means to care for this beautiful creature, I had almost no training in caring for horses. His home was a small fenced area that quickly became sandy. The only good thing was the shade of a mature oak tree. After some time, even with supplemental feed , hay and interaction, Tonka became depressed. I had a friend who lived close by and owned a large farm and offered to take him in and care for him until he was healthier. After about a year, I decided I wanted him back (I was about 13) and against my father's wishes, he helped me bring him home. When we got to the farm Tonka looked so beautiful, robust and shiny. I could immediately see the difference in his demeanor and how he carried himself. When we led him off the farm, he resisted because he knew exactly where he was going. Against my father's strong urgings, I convinced him to let me take Tonka back home to his dreary life. Even though I know Tonka loved me and I believe he knew I loved him, now that I'm much older and a little wiser, I've learned a lot about animals and know they are so much more than I ever imagined. I picture the day we forced him to leave the farm and it's so painful. It's something I live with and always will. I still have dreams about him and will always miss him. There is a belief that animals' souls live on just as people do and if they do, I sincerely hope he knows how deeply sorry I am for taking him away from his utopia. Tonka was a beautiful soul and I'll always love and miss him. The best I can do is to honor him by treating all the animals in my life with love, understanding and respect and the permanent ache in my heart will never let me forget how important that is.

We can't do better until we know better. So also hold yourself in love and compassion. It is an amazing but terribly sad aspect of humans that almost every person who keeps her horse caged for 24 hours/day genuinely LOVES that horse. It would be like you living in your bathroom for 90% of your life and the person who locks you in there goes without things to pay for your food, gives up social experiences to come and ride on your back, drives a crappy car to be able to pay your medical costs (cause when your life is unnatural, you get sick and injured a lot)... I could go on. But you get the drift. This is the reality for MOST horses in captivity. All we can do is BE the change. And bear witness, hold space for a different reality - hold the hope and possibility of a bigger, freer existence. We've all done things we're not proud of - things that usually arose from our own wounding, or just plain ignorance. Hold yourself in compassion sister. And make today better xox

I can totally relate to this sadness and regret I hate how selfish I could be effortlessly in my earlier days. But for me it was a farm I'd visit every winter and summer wed show up and ride the legs off those horses. I still cant forget even today all the times I was unaware of how unselfish true love really is. I'm still learning and I wont forget this lesson, like you I honor and embody every relationship I have been blessed to behold in my life. It only took the consciousness of that ugly feeling of selfishness for you to recognize that's not how you are...that's not how you ever want to be...not to be that way again. Thanks for sharing. Pray on it and ask for forgiveness. It is at that moment when you will be forgiven.

I loved this video ♥️ I have kind of a turbulent story with horses. When I was 12 y.o I begun to take care of a 7 horses herd, they were in a big field and the owner didn't took much care of them, was pretty rude and dominant when he used them (luckily he used them few times because he had lost interest). I went every weekend for three years, only to feed them, change the water and be with them in the fields. I didn't knew what I was doing, and that was the good thing! The horses learned my schedule, they would wait for me in the fence door, follow me through the field, had a good "siestas" together... The stallion liked to escape from time to time, I sometimes found him in the road while I was going there (I always went walking) and he followed me without rope or anything with traffic around. It took me time to realize the only reason I was able to establish that relationship with them was because I never asked anything from them, and I never ride them either. They would run away from the owner, and humans seeing our relationship would say "I had a gift with horses". I knew I didn't! Later in life I took care of more horses, but this time with the owners being more present. I was really scared of authority figures and they would always say to me How Things Were Really Done (obviously not my way), and I would always follow their lead thinking I was wrong (poor belief in myself and tremendous fear to stand against their metods). So, I have never achieved this kind of relationship again. I begun to follow the traditional way, ride more, dominate more, hurting the horse and myself aswell in that process. I was constantly feeling guilty about it. I connected with more horses and I lost that connection by listening to the big authoritarian guys instead of listening to myself and the horses. I had this dream some time ago to rescue horses and give them the kind of life you are giving them. I know now that dream was based in me feeling guilty and trying to seek forgiveness (I know it may sound a bit extreme, but it's because, for me, horses are way more special than people, so me hurting them because I was afraid to live my way really hurts me more than anything I may have experienced with people). I'm taking a break on horses so I can shed the guilt and shame off my system, so if life brings them to my life again I will act with pure presence, and not projecting my guilt to the relationship. Thanks for your videos, your conscience and your work, I love to see in you the truth I feel inside ♥️
@ListenToYourHorse4 жыл бұрын
Wow that's very powerful Fiona. And your plan sounds like a good one. Please don't be too hard on yourself though - most of us have had periods of domination and 'using' horses along our journey. But the most valuable thing is to be aware of that and actively seek to release it and not repeat it. This herd knows I don't want to be that way, so they actively coach me or reprimand me when I default to dominant behaviour. So don't worry - your next horses will help you re-program yourself!

@@ListenToYourHorse thanks a lot! :) I did kind of "abandoned" horse related dreams for several reasons, but now, through this video and the video of Jenna that I've just watched (were she shares her initiation in the herd) something have clicked inside me :) I have worked channeling info and healing people for years, and discovered recently I really didn't want to do that. Now for some reason horses are starting to be more present, in a different way. I'll not create expectations about it, just let it flow, see what life have prepared for me now that I'm moving in another direction (and house/region too), and not force things, but I do want to experience horses being now truly me after two years of break and deep healing. Thanks a lot for sharing all this beautiful things and for your work, I'm very happy I've found your channel :) A lot of love for all of you from Spain

MsGroovalicious ...I am shocked to know that about a lot of “ horsey girls”! Would never thought they would be that way. Though a little before my time I’d imagined they were all so crazy about their horses -they were like Liz taylor in National Velvet (!)- like there was some magical connection with respect between them. I actually have not seen the whole movie but that’s the idea I got from it as a teenager way back when it was very occasionally shown on tv- so I never caught the whole thing ever! Anyway I look at several types of animal vids in general and am fascinated by so many- I’m just a visitor here for horses as I am for most animals- I can’t decide outside of cats... if only I’d known about communication with animals earlier tho, great stuff!

How fascinating to see this lady thinking about what the horse may feel, want or need. And giving them time to decide what THEY will do. Not commanding or forcing them to do what SHE wants. This is a big contrast to the world where horses are not seen so much as partners but used to do things the woman or man in the saddle wants them to do. I am not riding - only an admirer of horses. But the comments in this clip are also useful for me - because I am a cat mum. The video tells me: Be patient, don't expect "human behaviour" from your pet. Do not be disappointed if it is not a lap-cat (took a decade until my ginger tom, soon 13 years, was willing to "make his biscuits" there) - try to accept your partner on paws as he is. So you will be less frustrated ;-)

I love the connection and the mutual trust you share with your Horses. I don’t have a Horse but I’ve always gravitated towards them. There used to be a big feild close to my home and there were a couple of older male Horses in it. I would go visit them about three times a week. At first they just stood around viewing me with mild curiosity and eventually they began to come over to the fence and allow me to stroke them or give them a scratch if they were itching. One day the owner dropped by to deliver theyre feed and she told me a little about them. The older one Sonny was 22, he was the more quiet and Eddie was 14 and spooked easily. They were both white and dirty and I longed to brush them but because they weren’t mine I never dared. I used to stand and talk to them for a couple of hours about my day and what I’d been up to and I’d ask them about theirs. They’d listen and nod and come close so they could smell me. If they weren’t there I’d call them and it was the loveliest sight to see them come galloping over to see me. It melted my heart. They’re not there anymore as the land has been turned into houses. It broke my heart when they left. If I ever was lucky enough to have Horses I’d be exactly like this with them. Thank you for this gorgeous video ..

love this real time horse time Jini. I'm sure I watched it before but today it was almost like being there with you. I love that even though you are thinking 'relationship' and not 'training' you are still setting boundaries for what's ok and not ok with your space/body and looking for opportunities to affirm what you want and not just what you don't want. As humans we can really get in the 'don't want' and I think that's really confusing for horses as they think in pictures and here we are visualizing what we don't want all the time. It's tricky lesson for sure and I am still learning it. I had the opportunity to meet 2 babies that were rescued and brought back to the west kootenays here. I actually utilized much of what I've been learning from your videos and herd integration to let a mare in with them (after them being almost on the other side of a fence for a day) and then leading a mare in (who was very clear with me that she had a job to do and if I'd let her in with them she'd take over and help them). It was pretty cool. The babies were each suckling on her after a short while (no she wasn't lactating) and then yawning and relaxing a lot.

@@ListenToYourHorse Awww. That means a LOT coming from you Jini. I do what I can for the horses I come into contact with. It's a mixed blessing as they quickly realize I am listening and often tell me many of their woes, but the tricky part is, does their owner want to know? Will I harm my relationship by offering what their horses are saying to me? Obviously, I've learned to ask the human if they want to know, but then I have to figure out how to not carry that information inside me....
@ListenToYourHorse6 жыл бұрын
@@JaiSequoia Ah well Montaro gave me the answer to that question - how to not carry stuff inside you that's not yours, or doesn't belong, or makes you feel icky, etc. So you do the 'As Above So Below' from this blog post and then you BUILD the energy - make the prana emanating from your heart bigger and bigger, and then just like flushing a toilet, FLUSH it down in one big whoosh, out the soles of your feet, into mother earth. If you have a lot of anger or negativity to drain, then keep doing it and after swirling it in your center, run it back down your legs into the earth, in an ongoing loop: in through the head, up from the earth, swirl, drain down the legs - just keep it draining for as long as you need to: listentoyourhorse.com/aikido-lessons-from-a-horse/

@@JaiSequoia I love what you both wrote ...please please please show people "the way" with horses. The horses are calling! I have been around horses my entire life. It has been my experience that most horse people are very clumsy, almost deaf, and much too dominant in communicating with horses. I feel the horse's telepathic energy and (thoughts, spirit and heart), like you both. I feel their sadness, when they are not "seen" or "heard". I speak for the beloved horses. I love horses to my soul. They are sacred beings to me...always have been. I try to make the people understand their language and their way. It helps to create a better life for each and every horse whose human learns a gentle , open-hearted, and calm way of being with their horse. Reciprocal friendship, allowing, being present and quiet, open-heartedness, and being a good listener help to guide the way. Horses are the best yoga instructors. They teach mindfulness. Many trainers believe horses need direction, that horses want a leader moving their feet, it is how they feel safe. Apparently, they haven't seen this yet, this is a very horse liberating style of horsemanship, maybe even evolutional. But I'm pretty sure, back when people's lives were much more integrated into their horse's, they too must of had a deeper understanding of each other. Then again, you see these beautiful wild mustangs living in the west, who were originally abandoned centuries ago and imagine how different horsemanship would be today if a horse would have been able to trust man.

Thank you superb. It was also beneficial to see your land, as I felt compelled to clear mine as it was when I moved here when cattle grazed. I am now rethinking that need having seen your foraging environment. I noticed my family enjoying a chew on twigs and leaves, too. Thoroughly enjoying your videos. Thank you again Sara. 🤗

The BEST option would be to have mixed-species grazing; horses, cows, sheep. Look at the work of Will Harris of White Oak Pastures - fascinating stuff. Oh wait, here you go: listentoyourhorse.com/get-rid-of-pervasive-weeds-by-strengthening-pasture-grasses/
feel so much peace horses and mountains miss the horses. seen 7 stuck in a bunch junk makes me cry

We just found out that witchhazel is all natural and great for bugs, fleas, and it makes their skin and hair great! maybe Juno would love it so he wont be so itchy! To keep coyotes and bears and other big predators away... put wolf urine around your perimeter
@ListenToYourHorse6 жыл бұрын
LOL! And I would get wolf urine... where?? Still, as the city expands so rapidly, I'm not sure we'll see anything more than coyotes now...

Zorra, blue roan/grey dapple (whichever you prefer lol) IS STUNNING! Theyre my absolute favorite.. but to find one with an entirely dark mane and tail is verg rare. I cant get over how gorgeous she is... my god, it makes me want to cry hahaha she reminds me so much of my very first horse ever. I was riding before i could walk, & i started walking by 8 months haha horses were my entire world and unfortunately as a 31 yr old, oldy lady single mom i haven't been able to provide my kids with the childhood i had but im determined to get some land and horses. I cant count all the things horses taught me and i want the same for my daughters.
@ListenToYourHorse5 жыл бұрын
I hear you - I STILL don't live on land, but at least my kids are getting the connection from coming out to the horses with me (I lease the pasture here). The amazing thing about Zorra is that both her dam and sire are pure white. Her full sister was completely white by age 2. But Zorra is 12 now and still hasn't greyed out. VERY unusual for an Andalusian.

Did you notice ‘ListenToYourHorse’ replied to your comment with “me for sure”. I expected her response to be a ‘ME’. My response to your comment is both her and the horses are lucky, that’s if the videos are unedited and she is genuinely kind to her horses. That being the case both are lucky because both her and the horses are getting their needs met.

I have a really great horse story, true story on my channel told by a 96 year old man. Title is something about a good man. It was a race horse going to auction in the late 1930s or early 1940s. It's a great story.

Hello my new friend...i've come to see your herd since you came to see mine....horses and elk lololol! We communicate with our horses in the same manner. Beautiful horses and place.....and your heart as well! I absolutely love taking a stroll with my herd and seeing who wants to come with me.....such a gift this heart to heart and soul to soul connection and language. So sad that many miss out on this joy. Anyways....subbing and happy to have a new horse and YT friend!

Amazing video and so insightful.Horses are one of my favourite animals in the world.I have never seen a group of horses so calm.Forgive me for my ignorance ( I live in Scotland with no large predators ) I would have thought with Coyotes and mountain lions around, it would be too dangerous to let them be in an environment like this?
@ListenToYourHorse5 жыл бұрын
You have to think how horses survive in the wild. Predators will take the babies, injured, old/slow horses first. But the herd will also protect it's own. Coyotes live here year-round, but bobcat's only occasionally show up and move on very quickly as we are quite close to the city.

I admire your illusion that there is an equal relationship but they're only coming back because there's a food reward. That's classic conditioning and training. They controlled everything beyond that. You even rewarded the tardiness of their arrival with Alfalfa. You say you communicate with sharing images but you sure do a lot of talking. I'm not convinced. Your horses have a lovely life.
@growinspirit53615 жыл бұрын
horses don't rush. when they arrive to a spot they like, they'll take a break when that's possible. if she would've headed on they probably would've followed her. her horses obviously trust and love her. we have to let horses be horses and just build on a harmonious relationship where both sides are happy and equal. we're not supposed to command them
