I think the reason I actually love New Horizons the most is because, firstly, I'm a sucker for tropical islands, but also because I don't have any interest in the crazy ridiculous island designs everyone else has been doing. My island is is basically the way it started out, except now it has stone pathways and all the buildings and houses have been placed in neat lines rather than haphazardly put wherever there was room. That's the fun of New Horizons, you don't actually have to go crazy if you don't want to.

The level of freedom in New Horizons really is a monkey's paw scenario. People have been begging for these QOL improvements forever, but we got them at the exclusion of many other things. Including just... a feeling. Past games had a feeling that I can't describe, and it's just not there with New Horizons. I think the fact that you always moved in to a pre-established town gave it a different vibe.

I used Wii Speak with City Folk as a kid and it was my first experience with voice chat. Most players I encountered at the time were actually respectful and we usually followed the town owner's rules. I'll argue that being able to physically talk, hang out, and trade with other players as opposed to scripted NPCs made Animal Crossing feel far more immersive in a way that later titles couldn't achieve since.

Your content is so incredibly good man. Every time a video of yours releases, I’m always so happy by the time I’m done watching it. I recall you saying in one reply to a comment on another video that you wanted these videos to feel like a casual conversation you’d have with a friend at a bar, and that’s totally the vibe I get from them. You manage to come across as though your simultaneously very passionate about the subject matter and that you don’t really give a shit in a way that feels very comical but also very human. You exhibit a sort of tough-love friendliness that’s so witty and full of personality that I just can’t help but smile whenever I watch one of these. They’re just so good and I constantly rewatch these videos over and over and over, and it helps that you also have very intelligent and informed views and arguments about the games you cover, with the Mario Odyssey critique being one of my favorite videos of yours for that reason. Anyways, so far I’ve only played the original and New Horizons, but I intend to try out Wild World and particularly New Leaf at some point. I’ve been playing through a lot more classic Nintendo games lately to discover more old series to love, and I’ve now played through almost every Zelda game (which I honestly wasn’t very impressed by that series) and almost every Metroid game (which I really liked the 2D entries of). I think your take on New Horizons being a sort of sterile diorama was painfully accurate. Despite enjoying the game, I found that the game tried to reel you in with the dumb mobile game thing of extrinsically motivating you with the nuke miles instead of just giving the player a lot of stuff to do, and after a while it just sort of felt like I was dragging myself along a shag carpet and I stopped playing from total burnout. The world didn’t feel very alive, and I was surprised by just how real the characters of the original felt in comparison. Also sadly I found out that my gamecube’s clock battery is fucked so I have to change the clock every time sadly. All that said, this was another amazing video and might be my new favorite of yours. You’re an absolutely amazing KZbinr. I can say with absolute certainty that this is not B-tier shit.

My GameCube clock is screwed up too... Also, how could you be unimpressed by Zelda!? It’s, like, the most perfect game franchise of all time!
@shadowpheonix17513 жыл бұрын
@@nickk3077 ok first of all, I respect your Pikmin pfp hardcore. One of my all time favorite game series. But anyways, this has actually been the subject of much internal conflict for me. I mean, out of all the Nintendo series that I could’ve felt weren’t that interesting, why did it have to be Zelda? It’s a game franchise that’s so ingrained into gaming culture, with so many concepts it introduced going on to become staples of game design. It’s a series of games with an almost unparalleled reverence. I’ve always been appreciative of a wide variety of games, and I’ve always been a big fan of Nintendo games, which is why my disappointment with the Zelda series bothers me so much. Overall, I’ve been playing a lot more Nintendo series in the past year or so and I’ve found a lot of games that I love in the process. I’ve found two of my favorite games of all time with the paper Mario’s, I’ve found my favorite racing game ever with f-zero GX, I found a great tactics RPG in FE three houses, I thought kid Icarus uprising was fantastic, I discovered a love for 2D Metroid, StarFox 64 surprised me with how much I enjoyed it, animal crossing has been a joy to play so far, and even Mario strikers charged and toadstool tour have been pretty fun Mario sports spin-offs. But there are 3 series that just haven’t clicked with me the same way those other series have: The mainline Kirby games, the Metroid Primes, and most of classic Zelda. Kirby just isn’t for me. My favorite Kirby game is Air Ride and the only other ones I’ve played are super star and Dream course and the only other ones I intend to play are 64 and planet Robobot. I don’t really care much for his games. I think they’re objectively good and I kind of liked them, slow paced floaty platforming just isn’t for me. I liked Air Ride more because I just like arcade-y racing games and because City Trial. 3D Metroid and Classic Zelda are a bit more difficult for me to put my finger on, however. If I had to guess one thing that’s probably the culprit, it’s most likely just how often it felt like nothing was happening and it just felt like I was holding a direction on the control stick. Metroid Prime had way too much of this, I was getting so sick of backtracking and how slow the game felt by the time I was at the end. If I had to pick another thing, I’d probably say I didn’t enjoy the combat of them either. Metroid Prime’s enemies were so bullet spongey that I would actively avoid fighting them by the end of the game, and 3D Zelda combat has never felt that enjoyable to me. I always hated that in order to use an item, you had to press the button once in order to equip it. It made me feel less in control because I’d often just want to use the item but then I wouldn’t because of the first button press and then I’d get hit by an enemy, and it made me try to stick to general sword combat, which I’ve also never found to be that enjoyable in the Zelda series. Its still got that sort of clunky feeling where it just doesn’t feel like I’m in total control, and there’s also just not a whole lot going on in most encounters. But if I had to point out one thing in particular, it would have to be how disappointing I felt Ocarina of Time was. I played it at first back in like 2015 and I tried to love it. I wanted to see the same Ocarina of Time that everyone else seemed to see, I wanted to love this franchise that everyone else seemed to love. But I just wasn’t interested. The child dungeons were all incredibly boring to me, the world felt like it was unnecessarily large and devoid of interesting content which sucked to me because id heard all about how these games had fun exploration but I was disappointed when I found that there was just a couple peahats and some trees in Hyrule field, the combat felt really awkward and the enemy designs in particular felt cheap, and progression seemed way too obtuse. I know a lot of people like to say that it’s entirely possible to figure everything out by just playing the game but I don’t care, you could beat Zelda 1 without a guide too that doesn’t make banging your head against a wall for an hour any more enjoyable. I dropped it right before the forest Temple and didn’t beat it until recently. I had actually never beaten a classic Zelda game until I revisited my old wind Waker HD save and forced myself through it some months back, which was when I finished Ocarina and then proceeded to buy almost every other Zelda game and play through them. I’ve beaten the link’s awakening remake, Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora’s Mask 3D, Wind Waker HD, Minish Cap, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, Link Between Worlds and Breath of the Wild, beat Zelda 1 and ALttP with save states, and played some of Zelda 2, Oracle of Ages, Four Swords Adventures solo on emulator, Spirit Tracks and Triforce Heroes. After playing them all, I came to the conclusion that there were only five that I actually cared about. Wind Waker, Link Between Worlds, Twilight Princess, and the only two that I actually think are deserving of the praise they get, Majora’s Mask and Breath of the Wild. The rest weren’t my thing. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy them; I enjoyed exploring in Zelda 1, and the dungeons were usually solid. But (and this is MY PERSONAL OPINION) I think Zelda games tend to do many different things and I think that only a few of them managed to do all of those things competently. I think that objectively, Breath of the Wild, Majora’s Mask and A Link Between Worlds are the best Zelda games. Breath of the Wild was the first time where I played a Zelda game and actually loved it. The combat was amazing, exploring has never been better, the puzzle solving always felt very interesting because of its open-ended nature and the physics engine, and the game just felt like what I wish the earlier games in the series were. The dungeons were a pretty big hiccup, but the rest of the game was so fun compared to the earlier games that I didn’t even care. A Link Between Worlds also felt like one of the only Zelda games that accomplished everything well. The Maiamai hunting and the item renting made exploration super enjoyable, the gameplay overall felt a lot smoother and combat felt tighter, the puzzles were really good and some had multiple solutions which was cool, the wall merging mechanic added a layer of depth to the gameplay that I enjoyed, and the dungeons were all very solid. I honestly think A Link Between Worlds is the most “Zelda” Zelda game out there, since it’s got the freedom of open-ended exploration from the first game and BotW combined with more iconic series staples. And then there’s Majora’s Mask, which I think is a very special game in the grand scheme of Nintendo. While it inherits things I find boring from Ocarina of Time, it also found ways of circumventing those obstacles and remained enjoyable despite them. An example is the walking. Normally walking in Zelda games just feels like a chore, but the time limit makes you sit on the edge of your seat whenever you’re walking somewhere and the bunny hood also speeds everything up so that it’s not as painful. It’s also a completely unique and wildly interesting world that hasn’t been seen in any game since and it’s my favorite world, story and set of characters in any Zelda game to date, and it has one of my favorite soundtracks of all time to boot. It’s a fucking masterpiece game that I think still stands the test of time. Those three are really the exceptions to the rule, however. The rest of the series, while I wouldn’t say they’re bad, just felt kind of boring to me. I never really felt accomplished after beating a Zelda game, which is strange to me but that’s just how it was. I liked Twilight Princess because I thought the combat and dungeons were cool, I liked the exploration and the aesthetic in Wind Waker, I thought Link’s Awakening was a relatively tight package, but after that I don’t really care about the other games all that much. Majora’s Mask and Breath of the Wild are the only two games in the series that I’d rank among the best games I’ve ever played. Once again, this is all just MY opinion. But yeah, I just kind of felt like nothing really happened in most of the games, and like the gameplay just wasn’t very interesting for a good amount of the gameplay. One thing I will say about Zelda is that it’s perhaps the most consistent game franchise in existence. It’s impressive how the series only ever faltered during the DS/Wii era, and even then, those games still have their fans. But while I think they’re very consistent, I also think they’re consistently not games I find to be as fun as most people seem to say they are. My opinion on Zelda has always been this: the presentation will always be good, the music will always be good, the game will always function perfectly fine, but whether or not I enjoy the game that much is up in the air. Again, my opinion. Sorry for rambling, but this series has been giving me a headache from how much I’ve been thinking about it because I’m still just trying to understand my own feelings about these games. Edit: whoa, didn’t realize how long this got, sorry lol

Ok... so I have a few issues with New Horizons that weren't really expressed in this video that I'd like to share personally. So firstly... crafting is the WORST mechanic I have ever seen in an Animal Crossing game! All crafting amounts to is whacking a tree or rock and going whack... whack... whack... and slowly picking up the materials, going one... two... three... This really boring process that adds NO challenge and is basically mandatory that you do it over, and over, and over and over, and OVER, and OVER, and OVER again! Hitting rocks also feels very awkward too. Hitting rocks multiple times originally was a secret and felt like an exploit. Now it's part of the core gameplay loop and it just feels like this outdated mechanic that makes the game even less enjoyable! What makes this whole process EVEN WORSE is the fact that, one, your tools can BREAK, and two, you can only craft one thing at a time and have to watch this slow cutscene each time! What were the game developers thinking? This isn't fun! It's purely a test of my patience! To be fair... there are occasions where crafting can kind of be a challenge with finding the right materials, but if that's the case, it's just annoying that I am rewarded with a recipe that I can't even use for a very long time! Not only that, but crafting also devalues the stores because now, several of the more interesting items are found elsewhere! Stores were already pretty useless in New Horizons, with the less furniture sets than even the GameCube game, way less furniture than New Leaf, and the fact that many items are rewarded through the terrible Nook miles system. In fact, furniture was so bad that they had to make SEVERAL updates to come anywhere close to what New Leaf had AT LAUNCH! Secondly, I really dislike the "Nuke" miles system. In previous games, you were rewarded for doing tasks by talking with villagers and doing favors with them. In prior games, not only did you get a reward from doing these tasks, but the reward was much more immediate, you got funny dialogue, and you also obtained self-satisfaction from helping out your neighbors and just being a good person! The nook miles pretty much take away that self-satisfaction you get from helping neighbors and feel purely video gamey. In my 200+ hours playing this game, I have only received less than 15 requests from neighbors, while actively trying to get them to ask me for stuff! My only guess as to why this is is because the developers thought the Nook miles were a better system worth replacing when they are very inferior! Thirdly, terraforming is very emersion breaking and basically goes against everything Animal Crossing stands for. That's kind of a main issue when this is one of the core features advertised for New Horizons. The amount of control the player has over their island is artificial and doesn't make me feel engulfed in this world the same way I was in games like the GameCube game. Terraforming should NEVER be in an Animal Crossing game! If they wanted to give players more control over there island they could have handled it in a much better way than making the player a freaking god! I have an idea: how about since the Resetti bros have no purpose in this game how about giving them little construction shop, where you can pay them to create little chunks of land like a pond or cliff or something. Maybe instead if that's too limiting, you can give them a blueprint that redesigns the entire island to your liking! THAT would give the player much more control without making them a god! Plus the process would be much faster! It also makes sense because moles are ground arranging animals. It's little things like this that could have made the game feel more like an Animal Crossing game. Fourthly, like, the music just sucks... It just sucks so much! The entire soundtrack is repetitive without offering much variety, using that same main theme over, and over, and over, until you have finally reached a breaking point! Having a repetitive soundtrack in almost any other game would be just fine, but this is Animal Crossing, a game that you play constantly! Fifthly, or was it sixthly or maybe seventhly?? I'm not entirely sure at this point, but regardless, this game lacks so many of the iconic characters that gave so much life into the world of Animal Crossing! This is a MAJOR problem and basically destroyed any chance of this being a great game for me. Booker, Cooper, Kapp'n, Tortimer, Pelly, Pete, Phyllis, Dr. Shrunk, Wendell, Lyle, Don, Resseti, Brewster, Chip, Nat, Harriet, Grace, Katrina, and probably a lot more. It's called ANIMAL Crossing, where are these ANIMALS that once gave the world depth? Because of this New Horizons feels more hollow than the freakin' DS game! How is that even possible? A DS game surpassing a Switch game in content?? That's just embarrassing! The personalities of this game also suck. It's just more salt in the wound at this point, that makes this game feel more lifeless than it already does. The Animals are just too happy in this game! See, Animal Crossing was sorta like real life before where it had a lot of good moments, but also its bad moments. The villagers kinda represented that somehow by being both nice and mean. They were dynamic, providing for an experience I could only really receive from Animal Crossing at the time. Now they are purely cosmetic. The way they work too is stupid too and wasn't thought out at all. Now since they don't request anything from you, the only way to really receive their friendship is by giving them gifts which is really superficial and not what Animal Crossing friendships should be like! Why don't they just all this series "Customize whatever you want but with weird elements that kind go against that sometimes" Crossing instead? Why are there any limitations on this game if I am supposed to do whatever I want? Why can Animals wear whatever they want when that contrasts with someone's perfect island? Why can't someone move the plaza when they can move everything else? Why can villagers have a catchphrase if someone doesn't like it? Why can't someone have whatever item they want if they are supposed to control this entire island? Why is moving ugly villagers out so hard when someone should have full control over everything? The game is constantly at odds with itself not exactly knowing what it is. Does it want to be an Animal Crossing game or does it want to give you complete freedom over everything and lose what made it special? It's like this weird limbo state of being both. As you can tell... I am a little passionate about these games...

I didn’t even say a thing about gyroids, the annoying online, no cafe, only one shop, no Resetti, how the hame doesn’t surprise you and all the secrets of the older games become routine, and, like, a lot more. I’m kinda drained at this point.

@@nickk3077 I'm sad Animal Crossing has become the way it is for Switch, even discouraging me to buy it because of the absent of some of the things I like about New Leaf and things I heard in the previous titles. I loved the animals in New Leaf and how I can become friends with them and grow a relationship and to see a lack luster of them in New Horizons makes me sad, heck I don't like talking to people anyways so I rather talk to the animals. 2:21 - 3:35 yeah animal crossing is a metaphor for life if u truly think about it. Yeah while most of this shit u do might seem meaningless since there’s no end goal, u play it because it’s a fun experience and enjoyable. Just like life everything might seem meaningless but the meaning we give these acts r meaningful for us and is why we live life

New Horizons was my first AC I thought about getting New Leaf a long time but decided well maybe just get the next one, that next didn't come out for a whole gen. I enjoyed it but sometimes were off the least interesting thing in this *Animal* Crossing game were the animals themselves but then learned that's because they watered them down for some reason and left out a lot, then there's the crafting good for furniture but for tools and the awful storage system just made this relaxing game come off as annoying. Plus some tedious stuff like buying items one at the time, Red selling mostly fake art 3 times in a row, lack of actual good furniture etc While I enjoyed this game with my family too idk if it really sold me on the series yet since it has so many missing elements and the new stuff they tried to add are the worst parts of the game that COULD be fixed with patches but that would mean Nintendo has to admit that these new ideas hindered the game and they are too stubborn for that. Makes me regret not getting New Leaf all those years ago instead since that game seems overall better Nintendo could update this game, I know NL got a big update a few years after that game came out but NH sold so well do they have too? they already got big money so they don't need to impress anyone, idk if I have hopes for the next game or Nintendo might remove even more now that AC is a big bucks series

Honestly, New Horizons just sucks! Imagine waiting several years as an anxious Animal Crossing fan just to get something with less new content than the DS game! I made a comment here displaying my thoughts on the game in further detail if you are interested.
@TwilightYonder7203 жыл бұрын
@@nickk3077 I agree with most of it but a few, Nook miles would be better if the game actually gave you stuff to buy with them, you could easily just have a million pile up, at least you use bells to move buildings. I like the idea of terraforming and making your own town how you want it but like in the video they make you wait to do that instead of giving you the choice at the beginning but yeah it's a shame a lot of people waited almost 10 years for a new mainline title for it to be missed potential, worried this might be the norm for a lot series
@nickk30773 жыл бұрын
@@TwilightYonder720 I don’t know though, man. This is Animal Crossing, it’s a life simulation, not a god simulation game. Having the ability to raise the ground to your heart’s desire is uncharacteristic of Animal Crossing. There’s a reason this isn’t a feature in any of the previous Animal Crossing games. Terraforming doesn’t even have challenge and just wastes your time arbitrarily.
@TwilightYonder7203 жыл бұрын
@@nickk3077 I see what you mean (although god simulation is a reach since you can't control what your villagers do) I feel like a better way to handle this is maybe have a animal in town you have to pay to terraform for you and you can rearrange your town on a chart instead of doing everything piece by piece because it's very slow for no reason. that way you aren't doing it and it's much faster

New Horizons was best when you were working towards K.K Slider coming. It felt like an Animal Crossing game where you would slowly progress. After that however there is like no progression. Nook's cranny has 1 upgrade. When updates came out you just got the stuff that was in them. Also like you said so much was missing from this game that others had. It improved in many areas, but also messed up in so many as well. I am incredibly disappointed that this next update is the last. The game still feels like it is lacking content compared to the other games in the series. Also the villager interactions are so bad and repetitive. There are also so many quality of life changes that still need to be made (Bulk crafting for example). It is a good game, but it feels really lacking.
