The Animal Crossing New Horizon's theme is super catchy and perfectly reflects the world of animal crossing. But how does Kazumi Totaka's the theme work from a composer's point of view? Guy Michelmore pulls it apart and tries to work out how he came up with. Then he takes the main motif and applies it to genres where it was never meant to go!

Maybe a video on the use of leitmotifs in general. Peter and the Wolf...The Batman TV series (remember each villain had their own leitmotif?) maybe Wagner is a bit too much, but such a useful tool for "character recognition" is a must for scoring to film. Can't remember whose channel it's on, but someone did a great "deconstruction (Derrida ™️!) on the flat 5th motif in West Side Story.

Brilliant video and you're an awesome person! I wonder if you noticed the subtle music changes when you're visiting the museum. Like when you're in the dinosaur exhibit the music is simple and eerie, evoking a feeling of a very distant time, and when you move to the room with mamooths it has a similar ancient note but kind of like it was less time ago than the first room. Or maybe I'm just imagining things, but it makes me feel that way. Anyways great video as always, cheers!

To be fair, a LOT of recent Japanese music follows these kinds of chord progressions. Dozens of anime themes, example, follow very similar - if not identical - chord progressions. It works really well.

Indeed, Guy. Manipulating a 'motif' is a great way of squeezing every last drop out of the font. Probably something we should practice a little more. The pitch bending idea is an interesting angle. I have always been a bit of a fan of bending when I get half the chance. Doesn't always work out well but the possibilities are endless.

Personally it's my favorite realm of composing so this was fascinating, and I'd definitely be interested in some more. Some really good ones to look at would be The Witcher, Horizon: Zero Dawn, or Assassin's Creed Odyssey.. they all make heavy use of real "native" instruments that you don't see too often, so I think there's a lot of potential there to make interesting content. Thanks as always for the video!

What are the chords, what kind of keyboard, why does this Springsteen track have glockenspiel on it? Hey Guy I'm just getting into making orchestral music making but I'm not sure which tools I'd need. I got the free Spit Fire now but I was wondering do you believe it is essential to get a piano like that to plug in for the program? I'm a percussionist, so anything percussion I can do really well. The other instruments I know each tone but not the note letter that corresponds to it, so I listen it out and try to match the tones. Great channel btw!
