This is who all the characters represent. More for the book because the movie leaves out some important characters and plot details. Napoleon = Josef Stalin Snowball = Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky Old Major = Karl Marx Squealer = Propaganda Boxer = Working Class that doesn't question Dogs = KGB Clover = Working Class but questions what goes on Muriel and Benjamin = see what goes on but don't do anything (until Boxer dies) Cat = Opportunist Sheep = The classic yes-men of society Moses the Raven = Unified Religion Jones = Czar Nicholas the II Manor Farm being Russia Animal Farm being the USSR Frederick = Hitler His farm being Germany Pilkington = Leader of England His farm being Britain I think that's all of them.

No Major is Marx , he created the theory from his own mind and dies before the revolution - Lenin if included at all is in party of snowball ,but it's cleaner to have him as Trotsky alone . I think people get the Major/Lenin thing because his skull is on public display to be revered by the Animals -like lenin in Red Square
@WEITESTAL6 жыл бұрын
@@5888max Marx was never a revolutionary, yet a keen analyst of his time, whereas Lenin turned Marx' observations into political theory for a mainly agrarian state. Thus the outspoken revolutionary agenda of Old Major makes him an embodiment of Lenin. Even the latest Penguin study edition of A.F. says so in its character description.

@MarkusHorror8 жыл бұрын
+WestPlays (forgive my poor English...). That's an opinion, I do respect that. But I'm still convinced that Old Mayor likely represents Marx. And that Snowball is a fusion of Trotzky and Lenin (Lenin in the first half of the story, Trotzky later on). It wouldn't be a contradiction to what Orwell admitted.
@westplays10378 жыл бұрын
Markus Dittrich Then why was their a power struggle between Snowball and Napoleon. It's well known that Lenin approved of Trotsky and though Trotsky was the smarter between Napoleon and him. But Lenin also believed Stalin was stronger and therefore should be heir. The only power struggle this early in the soviet union is the one between Trotsky and Stalin (Snowball and Napoleon). So what is the evidence that snowball is Lenin?

Orwell was a socialist who hated capitalist exploitation of the working class. He probably identified with the song of Old Major, who may symbolize Marx or some British socialst. Mr Jones seems more like a typical member of the petite bourgeoisie rather than Czar Nicholas, who some claim was the richest man in the world. What Orwell hated after coming back from his trip to Russian in 1948 (1984) was Bolshevism/Stalinism/Russian--style Communism which was (and still is) about enriching the ruling class of "pigs more equal than others". I don''t think Marx can be held responsible for the horrors in countries like the USSR, China and Cambodia because Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot were all pscyhotic tyrants who hardly had anything to do with real Marxism.
@mrlarvux2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, he was pretty obviously not saying things were better under Mr. Jones’ rule. He hated the exploitation of workers and tried to point out how it was a factor in both the western capitalist countries and in the Soviet Union.

@wolfgangplanck59179 жыл бұрын
argosar Lenin was essentially dictator (a ruler with unquestionable authority) of USSR The major task he faced was establishing this authority for himself and his party in the country. Most of his policies can be understood in this light, even though he angered some elements in the population while satisfying others. Examples of such policies include the government's seizing of land from its owners and redistributing it to the peasants, forming a peace treaty with Germany, and the nationalization (putting under central governmental control) of banks and industry.
