Animal rights activists linked to Extinction Rebellion have been arrested after disrupting the start of platinum jubilee celebrations by storming the Mall during the trooping the colour parade.

I can't get rid of the feeling that someone is going to end up getting shot if they carry on ignoring how dangerous it is to run out from crowds of spectators and towards soldiers taking part in a parade. It is only because the security people are so well trained that up until now they have made the right decision in a few seconds and haven't treated the protestors as potential terrorists. The courts should at very least make sure that the protestors are treated as dangerous, in the same way that it shouldn't make any difference whether a person is carrying a real gun or a replica. It's easy for journalists and observers like us who have plenty of time to think about it, but the security people have to make a decision in seconds as to how to protect the people who appear to be in danger.

They should never have got that far! Imagine if that was someone with a gun or knife intend on doing harm or taking a life. Our soldiers have been murdered before whilst of ceremonial duties (Hyde Park and Regent’s Park 1982). Many, many years ago there were enough troops to line the Mall shoulder to shoulder, now they stand about 10 or 12 paces apart. Although the police were quick, they were not quick enough, haven’t we learnt anything from terror attacks in London over the last few years? All the police armed or unarmed watching the crowds and this happens. There needs to be a full investigation, and someone needs a bollocking for the lack of security.

These people really aren’t happy unless they’re ruining someone else’s day. I’m not a Royalist but I’m quite happy to let those that are enjoy their celebration. I don’t actually think these protesters would be content simply to get their way if doing so didn’t upset some people. Heaping misery on others seems to be a key ingredient in their outlook. Those animals were cared for and trained and had formed a bond with their human companions similar to dogs with human companions. Police played well in that situation... A little restrained maybe
