An English interpretation:
I like animals. I like reading books about animals. I have four pets. A cat, a dog, a bird, and a fish. I want a horse. Mom told me I can get a horse when I'm 18. My uncle has a lot of horses and cows. He is a veterinarian. Someday I want to be like him. I like taking classes, learning, and becoming knowledgeable about animals. One animal I don't like? Bugs.

What is the sign you used when telling the story about your mom saying you could have a horse when you turned 18 that looked like make but you didn't finish it?

I have been interpreting for 26 years. Well, I was a full time hospital interpreter 25 years ago. I have seen that there is now a national certification! Is that something you advise?

I should have added that it was at Washington Hospital Center in Washington DC. Home of Gallaudet University. I was pretty busy! There was not a national certification that I knew of back then. I have seen more and people who pretend to interpret/fake it. Nelson Mandela’s ceremony was probably the most disgraceful thing I had ever seen. It is happening more and more. And, hearing people don’t know if they’re actually signing or not. It’s a sad state of affairs.

Wow, I was not expecting such a quick response! Thank you so much!! I really wish you were on the East Coast...I would love to meet you!! I have known about the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), however, there seems to be some other National Certification. Maybe I can simply renew my RID. I will definitely look into it. I was offered a job interpreting for the schools in my county, and I will also be helping out in an ASL classroom at my son's school!! (high school) Thank you so much for everything you do! You might want to check to see when the next RID meeting is for your state's chapter of RID that is drivable from where you live and then go there and meet a few other terps from your state and ask them about what certifications they recommend. Some states offer their own interpreting license or certification and that would be a good certification to have if you are going to be interpreting in a public school.

The captions are on the screen behind them. It explains what he is going to sign before he signs it. As Dr Bill says, try starting from an earlier lesson. He is an amazing teacher and I've learned so much through his videos.

Gatekeeping is "the activity of controlling, and usually limiting, general access to something." (Oxford) Let's not cheapen the term "gatekeeping" by confusing it with "prerequisites." Expecting someone to understand foundational math to benefit from a calculus class is not gatekeeping -- it is a prerequisite. Expecting someone to do the previous lessons in a language series before benefitting from a practice and review video in lesson 10 -- is not gatekeeping - it is a prerequisite. You can fully access and benefit from this free instructional video -- you just have to put in the prerequisite effort of doing the first nine lessons.
