In Uni, we had a class where a guest lectuer gave us her recent research papers and asked us to read them and write a quick summary of the results. She then gave us news articles citing her paper and they were all "xyz food causes CANCER!!!!!". Her papers were on nutrition and despite not a single paper showing eating the foods she was testing could cause cancer - because her paper mentioned specific foods and cancer together suddenly we had the newest cancer scare. She even showed us national papers citing her and more "legimate" news outlets that also twisted her papers. It was a quick and effective lesson for us and also insane how wrong everyone was about her research.

So I am a biochemist and want to say that melanin is a natural UV protector, and capable of reflecting 99.9% of UV radiation. But the problem we have is that these people see this data from studies and take it way out of context. If you had pure melanin and were bombarding it with UV in a lab setting, yes it would reflect 99.9% of UV rays (the old meme of a gun would kill cancer cells in a petri dish, like most things will kill cancer cells in a petri dish). However, in our skin the melanin is found within our skins matrix, and it's down to how well it surrounds those cells. Even in the darkest skintones, it doesn't fully surround every single cell. So whilst it will help to protect skin a little by reflecting some of those rays, the rest is absorbed by the cells which don't have melanin surrounding it. Furthermore, how much melanin we have is down to how many melanocytes we have, and white people generally don't have many. Nothing to do with eating "clean" and healthy. Melanogenisis is also literally triggered by UV exposure, so again our body only produces this "natural sunscreen" from exposure. So please, use sunscreen. Our bodies are great at protecting us from a lot of things, but it's not perfect. Also that robot face, I posted into all my classes on teams, no context or explanation, just to freak my students out. 😂 I got alot of "wtf is that?" (College teacher of Biochem - who genuinely only gets mad at her students when they come to lesson with sunburns).

There are certain chemical sunscreens that have been linked to the big C. According to the CDC, "Benzene is known to cause c$%#er in humans." Companies are allowed to use 2 parts per million (ppm). Valisure, which is approved by the FDA, is one of the companies that did a study on benzene in sunscreen and after-care products. There have been recalls for some brands in the past due to high levels of benzene. Sunscreen absorbs through the skin and enters the bloodstream, so it is important to be vigilant with what you put on your skin. There are mineral sunscreens that do a good job protecting skin, especially sensitive skin, and are reef-safe (use non-nano zinc oxide).

I’ll admit, I don’t like talc. I avoid it for comfort more than safety, but I do always end up breathing it. Logically I know that I’m not breathing in enough for harm, but I do live in a fire state and we breathe in air that is only legal because we can’t not have fires (there are too many, but fire is a normal part of a healthy forest, there’s no way around it). But mainly, I know of dozens of people who did not work in the asbestos mines in Libby MT but died of cancer because the stuff got into all the air, and I just can’t handle powdery risks. But I don’t say much online because people will just hear a tiny bit and extrapolate wildly. As with many things, it’s all about the amount & how much particulate you breathe in from other causes. I have a whole system for my dry clay, it’s too good for my skin to give up (bath powder), but I cannot bear to breathe any & clay is very fluffy lol.
@hannajung75122 ай бұрын
@@M0rbidCuriositeamaybe you can convince her to use mineral sunscreen without nano-particles. sure the stuff whitens your skin (or "yellows" it, when the brand uses carotin to give it a more skin coloured hue), but at least her skin is protected. another alternative would be sun protective clothing and sun hats with wide shades especcially for children. Standard Sunscreen is the safest option that is also pretty convinient, but when you cannot keep her from falling down that rabbit hole, maybe you can at least keep her relatively safe by convincing her to use alternative options to protect her skin.

CLEAN EATING RULES: 1) wash any food that is “touchable” at the store (like loose produce) 2) throw away food that touches the floor or contaminated surfaces 3) follow proper preparation & storage guidelines. Presto! You’re eating “clean.” These are ofc things we should all do, and they’re way more important than worrying about ingredients that are FDA or other agency approved. The FDA is slow, but even the US has a reasonably safe food system for things already regulated.

See idiots like these is what gives clean beauty a bad reputation. Clean beauty to me has always been about non-toxic and more environmentally friendly, whether the source of an ingredient is natural or synthetic is a separate matter. There are plenty of safe synthetic ingredients and plenty of toxic natural ones, poison ivy is natural but doesn't mean you should rub it on your face! Fragrance is a great example. There are hypoallergenic synthetic fragrances and as someone with sensitive skin a clean synthetic fragrance is actually less irritating to my skin than essential oils. However, due to lack of regulation and regular safety testing many synthetic fragrances on the market can be contaminated during the manufacturing process and it is these byproducts that will not be listed on an ingredient list (bc it is not intentionally put into a product) that often causes skin irritation. I don't use "all-natural" products because most of the time they are not safe for my skin to use but clean nontoxic products have been a game-changer when it comes to minimizing my rashes. At the end of the day "clean" shouldn't refer to the source of the ingredient but rather should refer to the condition and process of how a product was made IMO

The fearmongering is wild on social media by these irresponsible influencers. I work in the nutrition and health industry as a clinical dietitian for the past 10 years and i cannot tell you the crazy stuff i hear influencers pushing on impressionable people desperate to lose weight or "be healthy" and "eat right." even as far as choosing holistic nutritional medicine and just "clean eating" over chemotherapy/radiation for cancer treatment. it makes me sick
@montananerd82442 ай бұрын
I get so mad when core nutritional balance does not require all these crazy eating plans! If your baseline is healthy, creating decent meals is fairly straight forward IF you learn the basics as a kid so you don’t have to think through each detail. I’m so grateful to my mom, I learned to read the nutrition panel at 8, and we used that info on shopping trips, to this day, I grab a can or box and turn to the back immediately when I am considering a new food at the store. It’s just muscle memory now. But I only scan ingredients for allergens & general info, I figure the overall nutr profile is much more useful than a non-expert assessing FDA approved ingredients. Too many people invent food safety problems while eating the least nutritious, most expensive options available. Annie’s Mac and cheese is just a tax on stupidity.

Nobody will ever change my mind on Talc, I believe it's no good no matter what anyone says and not worth the risk. My Grandmother was part of the J&J lawsuit, yes they final settled but she passed away in 2016 at the age of 69 from ovarian cancer (which doesn't run in the genetics) She had a hysterectomy in her 20s and the doctor left part of 1 ovary so she wouldn't go into menopause early (didn't work and to think if they hadn't things might have been different maybe). She used baby powder all the time in her personal routine and ended up with cancer. So say what you want I'll never use the stuff!!

As a person who’s had handful of moles, surgically removed from my body…to prevent them from developing into melanoma. N yet I still do sunscreen… So get ANY MOLES CHECKED OUT, ONCE A YEAR,!! It will save ur worried mind - from an Aussie (melanoma home country )🇦🇺🤟🏼

The thing about talc is that it is an ingredient in many cosmetics such as powders and eyeshadows. However we should listen to the scientists about how safe or not it is.

Ok, but staying hydrated DOES help me not burn, I always apply spf, but can’t always carry it around all day to reapply, so as back up I stay hydrated, and it’s been working for me

Work in research here. The "self healing tissue" replacing animals does not make sense. If it's self healing, that would effect results of the study when it comes to efficacy. I did not look into details so maybe the details would make sense.

Half of my family members have suffered with skin cancer. The boomer generation baked in oil under foil. Then the millennials dipped themselves in sunscreen, so we will hopefully see skin cancer reduce. Now with this nonsense we will see another generation of skin cancer sufferers. 😢 I have watched my grandad, aunt and mum all have horrific surgery to remove skin cancer on their faces, necks and legs. WEAR SUNCREAM!

Damn my American brain. As soon as you said that lady found herself $2000 out-of-pocket I thought you meant the that was what she had to pay to get that abscessed fixed and I thought that was pretty cheap. And he said that was what she missed because she wasn’t able to work…

I feel bad for the woman who got injections, I really do! If a person who is giving you an injection is not taking you through all the side effects that could happen, even if it's super rare, that's a red flag for me! They should always go through it!

Korean sunscreens are sooo much better than western ones imao. I’ve been using the Isntree watery sungel for years now and I love it. The formula is thin and goes on pretty smoothly The only caveat is that it’s not waterproof.

So do you listen to the experts or some random “influencer” who read somewhere on the internet that sunscreen is toxic? I think I’ll believe the experts and their PEER REVIEWED STUDIES over some shirtless wildman melting beef tallow in his kitchen. After all… if those “natural” sunscreens actually WORKED - they would be marketed and sold.

okay, in all fairness about the dsitrusting of doctors in the sunscreen segement, yes use sunscreen im not saying not too, but i can understand the distrust and the though that alot of doctors are getting paid to ush it to you, because alot of doctors DO get paid to push certain treatments or medications on you.
