Additionally it might also be known that rheas may actually be more closely related to ostriches than to oceanian ratites, since rheas are more similar to ostriches than other ratites in addition to the continents that they currently live in (Africa and South America) having split apart after the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs.

This video says that “rheas are a bit harder to tell apart from emus”, and then mentions feather shape as the only obvious difference. I don’t think rheas are at all difficult to tell apart from emus. The feather shape is a difference, but not the most obvious difference. Emus are grayish-brown with sort of baldish heads that are mostly black and blue, and they have little stubs instead of wings. Rheas are gray all over with fuzzy heads and large wings like ostriches. To me, the two species look very different. But maybe I’m just too much of an animal nerd. 🤓
@AaaaNinja
@AaaaNinja 2 жыл бұрын
The wings are the most obvious. Emus basically have no forelimbs whatsoever just little atrophied nubs. Rhea have big honkin limbs they can spread out, touch the ground with them, flap them around.

Rheas are definitely easy to distinguish from Emus. Emus don't have any forelimbs whatsoever!!!!!!! They have like tiny sticks with no muscles. Rheas have magnificent forearms they can spread out and touch the ground with.

I've heard they're more aggressive during mating season and when taking care of their young and that they tend to be mellower in the winter. It also depends on the temperament/personality of each individual bird.
