I’ve always been fascinated by “gentle giant” animals. Basking sharks are no exception.
@justinjacobs15015 жыл бұрын
Same! What really interests me about them though is that most of the marine giants evolved from super predators. We have Basilosaurus the ancestor of whales, sharks, anomalocaris, and even a species of ancient crocodile showed signs of developing towards a gentle giant.

I blame Spielberg. Sharks are actually not dangerous to humans unless you imitate a fish or a seal, for example by paddling on a surfboard or flailing on the surface in panic. There was a French guy who proved this by working on his heart rate while swimming with sharks. When his heart rate went up then the sharks would get nervous and excited, they even bit him a little to examine whether he was a fish they could eat. And when he relaxed, so did they and he was able to pet them like dogs. He eventually did this in South Africa with great whites. Not sure if it's still there, but the doc was on YT years ago. Crazy man free swimming with great whites! You're not cathing me trying to do this, but he did prove that sharks are no threat to us if we behave properly around them.

@GutsofEclipse4 жыл бұрын
Cryptids are one of the less ludicrous things in the circle of superstitions. There's no doubt that there are plenty of undocumented species out there, especially in the ocean and the scarcely populated zones. It's not all that crazy to believe that somebody saw something that looked like a giant sea monster. If you define "monster" as something that looks like it crawled out of Hell to bring pain and suffering on the human race, then sea monsters are 100% real.

Partly, but definitely not solely. Studies found two of the most common places to find products from them are japan and Hong Kong. A lot of that was sourced illegally from the US. Collisions and being caught up in nets accidentally is also an issue (although much less so). I remember only 12 years ago when I was 8, going to the Deep in Hull and getting a Shark book. Each page had a picture of the shark it was talking about, but on the basking shark's page there was just a drawing of a creepy shadow in the water with a caption that read something like "Due to the mysterious and evasive nature of these sharks, artists haven't been able to accurately draw this shark". Gave me the creeps, despite the whole gentle giant thing they seem to go for

....Why did that depiction of a basking shark have feet/legs? 😆
@melvinshine98415 жыл бұрын
I think it was because that depiction wasn't from an eyewitness combined with misinterpreting what claspers are.
@KingTy-Gaming5 жыл бұрын
I can imagine that conversation already Artist: "what's a clasper?" Witness: "it's the legs/appendages for a shark" Artist: "legs? Gotchu" 🤣
@Openreality5 жыл бұрын
It didn't. Watch it again. The leviathon mentioned in three bible had feet, so at least the label can be given to a dinosaur that hunts and lives in the ocean and land.
