As a kid our parents took us to the south pacific where there were coconut crabs. On that island in 1971 there many things you had to watch out for. The first day we were there they pulled a 19 foot croc off the playground. Everyone seemed to take coconut crabs with respect. Especiallly at night!

What I get from this is that coconut crabs are kind of like the sharks of the crustacean world: they're super cool, endangered, and should be protected, but also they're pretty dangerous, will eat almost anything, and it's a very bad idea to bother one unless you fancy losing a few fingers or so.

The claw is strong to close, but weak to open. That's why when captured, it is customary to bind the claw with a rubber band or string. However, one should keep in mind that the crab can cut open a 55-gallon drum. It can take off a person's toes or fingers. OTOH, their diet of coconuts makes them very tasty.

While in the Navy I was stationed on Diego Garcia Atoll, BIOT. one of the guys in the battalion had a coconut crab he would walk on a leash. At night if you were in the jungle areas you could hear them walking ever so quietly. Sneaking up to take a piece off your leg. Just kidding about the leg part. We were more concerned with scorpions in our boots or stepping on a Stone fish while swimming in the ocean. We even swam with blue sharks, mana rays and more variety of schools of tropical fish then one could count.

Funnily, if you pet their butts they fall asleep. You can grab them fom behind quite easily. They will however try to move your fingers towards their claws with their legs. Do not let them do that! After they fall asleep you can put them on their head or any other pose you find amusing. After a while they will wake up a bit desoriented and annoyed.
