@@Leksa135 It’s still cute no matter what their motives are! Do you have to ask what was he thinking? How did he feel? Was he imitating something he saw a human do? Do you think raccoons who rub their food in water scrubbing and rubbing quite vigorously are imitating a human, nah I don’t think so since they all do it and of course you could say they just like wet food or it makes it easier to swallow but they do spend considerable time rubbing it. What about some chimpanzees who have been observed using crude tools to open nuts or scoop up ants didn’t they devise that or imitate a human. Why is it there is always at least one person who has to argue over simple little remarks and turn it into a debate. Why don’t you worry about bigger things?

8:41 The chimpanzee called ‘Mama’ was sadly enough not only very sick, she was actually dying. There is longer footage of the beautiful and loving interaction, where prof. Van Hooff (and other straff at the Dutch zoo where Mama lived for so long) said his farewell to her, while he comforted her all the way. Each time I even see a short clip as this one of this display of love and respect, I tear up immediately. I certainly recommend everyone to watch the longer version of this.

@Walk Straight Path This was written in one of the mayor Dutch newspapers: “On Tuesday 5 April 2016 chimpanzee 'Mama' died at the age of 59, being one of the oldest chimpanzees in Europe, in Royal Burgers' Zoo in Arnhem (the Netherlands) . An age of 59 years is very old in chimpanzee terms. ‘Mama’ was estimated to have been born in the wild in 1957, after which she lived for some years in the German zoo in Leipzig. In 1971 ‘Mama’ came to Arnhem with the chimpanzee women ‘Gorilla’ and ‘Franje’, where they formed the start of a new chimpanzee colony that would become world famous. For the first time in zoo history, several adult chimpanzees were kept together in one enclosure. In this group ‘Mama’ became world famous for her dominant and influential role in it. In her glory days she was at the absolute top of the ranking within the Arnhem chimpanzee group. Normally dominant men intervene whenever the order needs to be restored in such an enclave, but in this group ‘Mama’ was in charge and she ruled with a firm hand. When some adult males were introduced, they had a hard time, and it wasn't until ‘Mama’ and ‘Gorilla’ were temporarily isolated, that a new social hierarchy could emerge. Biologist Emirates Professor Jan van Hooff said about ‘Mama’ after she had passed away: “A lot of people I've shown around, after lectures and courses, knew her. Then when we arrived at the lodge, ‘Mama’ would run to me from the farthest corners to greet me excitedly from across the canal, chimpanzee-style, with a loud panting 'ohoh!'. Over the past year it has become increasingly difficult. It took her longer and longer before stumbling to the moat. I will absolutely miss her.” After her return to the group, ‘Mama’ was reluctant to accept this. Despite her name, she was a bad mother. Not infrequently, her young had to be raised with extra help from caretakers. Later in life, she was appreciated by her fellow group members for her conciliatory skills and her role as mediator in conflicts. She has maintained a high position in the group throughout her life, although granddaughter ‘Morami’ has taken over her central role for a number of years.” Her passing was sad, no doubt. Her death however had nothing to do with being innocent or not. The Lady died due to the complications of (a very respectable) old age.

@@MrRyan-wu4jx if you get plopped into the middle of a jungle buck naked with nothing in hand, it won't be long before you realize we are no different. We are still animals and without the help of our technology, that's taken centuries to develop, we're still just a bunch of apes. Our idea of consciousness is entirely subjective and very general. We only experience it from the human perspective but from the outside, it's impossible to tell if something is conscious or not. All we can do is check a bunch of boxes that signal intelligence. Dolphins and elephants are two of a few non primate species that can recognize themselves in a mirror. If they have a concept of self, does that make them concious? We don't know. All we do know is that before we were humans as we exist now, we were just another animal in the food chain, and that the moment we are taken away from all the things that make our lives easier, we become little more than something else on the food chain. The thoughts and emotions we feel arose from evolution, which means that the building blocks necessary for them to exist already existed in our pre-human selves. The reason animals exhibit behavior so similar to humans is because we are animals too. They dont exhibit human behavior. We exhibit common animal behavior because we are animal.

I believe that is not a rat, but a South American rodent of some kind. But rats are super smart and very acrobatic. Did you know that they have hinged rib-cages so that they can squeeze through tiny gaps. And the way they often get into a house is tightrope walking along wires, then jumping through open windows!

That "rat" (actually a pacarana) was trying to clean the soap off, not using the soap to clean itself. The washing behaviour it is exhibiting is entirely normal for its species. There are a number of these where the animals are not exhibiting the behaviours that humans are attributing to them.

That's not true, some animals have more advanced brains and some are just really simple so their ability to feel emotions differ. Some can't feel emotions at all like invertebraes or fish (it's being debated) and some can feel very complicated emotions and are even aware of them like humans while most animals are able to feel only the most basic emotions which base off instinct like freight

I know it’s not realistic because technically we are animals too and in order to live and eat you have to eat another organism but seeing stuff like this really opens your eyes to how sentient these beings we call animals really are. At the very least they should all be treated humanely and with respect. I think we haven’t even scratched the surface yet in understanding how complex their feelings and emotions truly are. Maybe with brain scans and future technology we will figure it out. I hope I live long enough to see it.
