@salimn.1097
@salimn.1097 7 жыл бұрын
In short, it's when.. every instrument is playing a different time signature, but all at the same pulse and tempo - not necessarily a quarter note one. The most common way it's used in djent metal is the guitar(s), bass and bass drum all playing the same odd-time or not signature (goes from good ol' 5/4 and 3/4 to 13/8 and 41/16 and 41/32) and the rest of the drums in 4/4 to keep it listenable to the audience. Keep in mind: polymeter =/= polyrhythm.

Pollen Applebee I mean I go on that subreddit most days so sure? All I said was "polymeter is a beautiful thing"? I mean? There isn't much more to it. I meant it in the least pretentious way possible. Salim posted a wonderful explanation above, certainly better than I could do. Tosin uses polymeter well, I think it sounds nice and stuff. Yeahh...that's about it. Nice try though! Gr8 b8 m8

just chiming in, theres a difference between a band using djent sound/structure in a song (bands such as AAL, Tesseract, Periphery etc) and a djent band (see: Volumes, Wormholes) the entire song is boring repetitive djenting. It seems like you're looking for Prog metal bands, in which case I'd recommend the the progmetal subreddit (r/Progmetal) for countless lists of delicious proggy bands.

This isn't djent to me at all. Tesseract is Djent... but Tesseract is a shit load simpler than this... in terms of rhythm, you can actually clearly hear and define tesseract grooves, they don't take much time to interpret... as it the same with most djent bands, they have more structure... stuff like AAL reminds me of Messhuggah and Sikth... actual, thought out complicated grooves with a lot of structure and fluidity.. If anything this music is more "fusion" than anything, it's like the new Steve Vai or Dave Weckl stuff..

What is so good about Meshuggah? lol u wot m8? They might not be everyone's cup of tea, but they pioneered a revolutionary guitar sound and style for their time, which has spawned countless imitators and an entire sub genre of metal.

By better, do you mean a jumbled up shitstorm? This is far from AAL's best work. Almost no lead parts to carry the "rhythm" guitar part. I hope the entire album isn't a proggy mess like this.

This band has transcended metal, mastered jazz and obtained world music, I sure hope their next step will be more funky/fusion stuff. I mean if you add a little Snarky Puppy to Animals As Leaders, I don't know what will happen to the universe man...

As a listener, I'm often just blown away by what these guys produce. Every song just pulls me in, even their weaker material.... As a guitarist, I'm in pure awe of some of the passages. Barely human, but not alienating in any way. I feel more curious and interested than disheartened or demeaned in any way. I love these guys with a passion.

Yeah the brain dance was good, but it sounds like one of those breakthrough songs in between the classic AAL heaviness, like air chrysalis or para mexer. But I feared that they weren't going heavy with this album, then BOOM. Arithmophobia put my fears to rest. Odd time signature, alien metal-ish, sitar-ish, djenty excellence.

This is progressive metal taken to the next level. The rhythmic complexity, the melodic and harmonic variety, the outstanding technical abilities of Tosin, Matt, and Javier: absolutely mind-boggling...so much so that listening to it properly (what to speak of playing it) takes a lot of skill.
