I'm honestly glad they sell these animals for so much in your country. Yes they sell them cheaper in others but this makes it easier for people to not do proper research on the pet and be able to take care of the animal well. 500$ for a gecko seems reasonable, they need a lot of care after all and that way they won't get impulse bought

Good point actually, there's a lot of pet abuse going on in the states that probably wouldn't happen if exotic pets were more pricey.

Yeah, that's a good point 🤔 Maybe North America should try that, I haven't heard many abuse cases up here in Canada, but lots of media is focused on the states up here and it isn't really reported...

The amount of people that just walk into petsmart and impulse buy a betta fish or other small animal is sad. I was looking at the betta fish and this lady was planning to buy one for her 3 year old son but she had absolutely no idea that she had to cycle the tank first. I hate to think what would have happened to that fish if she had actually bought it.

@@imalionimaqueen7234 Dude, I went to PetSmart the other day and their ball pythons were ~$150 and their chinchillas were ~$200 and I find that ridiculous. Chinchillas especially require so much care. Not just anyone can handle that, especially if it's an impulse buy or "cause it looks cute". Plus, if you plan to skimp on the animal itself, it's pretty obvious you're likely going to skimp on its necessities as well.

@@lampylightbulb as someone who live in The states, the news dosent even show 90% of the animal abuse, & it’s so much worse than what they report. It’s so common to go on Craigslist and see people selling or even trading animals, the animals will always look so awful, close to death , it’s horrendous. I would say animals are really cheap here too, at least I think they are or they should at least be more expensive. I got a tremper albino leopard gecko with a tank, substrate, decor, heat mat, all for $80 😐 I’ve see. Leopard geckos be sold for $20 , so many animals get abused due to low prices and slack laws/regulations ☹️ I know people who go around shooting cats/dogs/any animal they can find outside with Bebe guns ☹️ Access to almost any animal wanted easily accessible. America needs to do better and add more regulations

As somebody who has had rabbits in the past. You're totally right. The amount of work required to keep them happy and healthy is comparable to dogs, more so in some cases. They need friends like rats do but way more space. They are wonderful pets, but not for beginners and they cannot be kept in the hutches normally sold for them.

I currently have a rabbit (holland lop named Maple) and while I love her to death she requires a lot of work. She's free roam since I live in a small apartment anyways and rabbits need a lot of space, but I have to be very careful about making sure she doesn't chew on any of my furniture or anything. She's also very bossy, I tried introducing her to another rabbit once and she was very territorial, lol. But she still requires lots of toys and engagement to keep her happy. People think rabbits are really easy pets but they honestly aren't. They're also so much smarter than people think they are, I've trained mine to do quite a few tricks. Sorry for the rant, lol

I had a rabbit who lived for so long and we kept him in a cage because one of our dogs was obsessed with the rabbit. So we fed him and all the normal stuff but I felt bad because we kept him in a cage. We let him out to play a lot and he just roamed around which was very funny. He was in his cage a lot but he really liked it in there. The neighbors had an outdoor hutch for rabbits and we wanted to try and have him in there but he didn’t really like it. I hope we gave him a happy life and we tried everything we could to make his life the best we could. R.I.P darth fluffy. He lived for over 10 years which is insane

Yeah. My stepsister’s roommates kept rabbits in hutches on their back patio, and it was BAD. They didn’t want to fix them because they wanted to try to “breed” them and the concrete patio was always covered in various rabbit excrements. Meanwhile, I used to volunteer at a 4-H farm and knew a guy who cared for a couple of rabbits like they were his children. He had a nice big enclosure set up for them in the small animal barn and made sure to spend lots of good quality time with them. There’s definitely a right way and a wrong way to care for rabbits.

Maybe it depends on location though. In that case, an African Egg Eating snake wouldn't work for me, and it maaaay be the same for some people? I have a chinchilla and I've had mice and rats in the past, I can say from experience that chinchillas are more interesting then both rats and mice combined, my chinchilla Picchu who is 5 years old is really intelligent and also so fun to watch, they also are quite literally the softest thing you will ever feel in your life. I love watching her just run around and interact with the world around her especially jumping up the stairs. I'm quite the night dweller too though (but she is kinda active during the day) they more crepuscular (think that's the right word, most active during dawn and dusk) The main problem for some people is the commitment as chinchilla can live (when cared for properly) 15 to 20 years, they also have such a range of personalities no two chinchillas are ever the same. Definitely say don't completely turn away from chins you don't get a proper view of what they're like from the pet store.

I dont know anything about chinchillas, but I think they look really cute. I touched one once and it was reeeeeally soft. Im not interested in buying one but your comment made me curious so id like to ask some questions if you dont mind. can you teach them tricks? Do they bond with you? And are they solitary animals? And how is it with costs and effort compared to rats for example? 🤔 Ah and someone told me they dont really like to be petted is that true?
@Hitchcock00Starlet
@Hitchcock00Starlet Жыл бұрын
@@priestrat this is an old comment, but I have a 17 year old chinchilla and I love gushing about him so I thought I'd answer. Yes, you can teach them tricks, mine can roll over and twirl around for a yogurt drop (his favorite treat), though it's not on a word command like a dog, it's more the motion of my hand accompanied by the treat. It takes a lot of work, but they'll figure it out if they're as food motivated as mine. I also heard of them being potty trained but never was able to make that work fully, he still poops a bit outside the enclosure. You can definitely bond with them, they're very social animals and form strong bonds. Mine loves to chill on my shoulders while I'm relaxing on the couch after work and I eat breakfast with him every morning, he also loves pets and scratches, he will purposefully angle himself so you get the right spots. You have to earn their love over time though, respect their boundaries, let them get used to your smell, and give them space if they bark or otherwise tell you to buzz off. Their body language is very clear. They live in little herds in the wild and do best in pairs as pets, mine was hand raised as an orphan though and never learned to get along with other chins so he needs a little more attention from me. They are expensive though, more comparable to a dog or cat. They need annual vet visits with an exotic specialist, quality food and hay, a huge enclosure with lots of toys and perches and hidey holes, and can be prone to health problems if not bred responsibly. Pet stores in the US are notorious for their chins having shortened lifespans unfortunately, so Id reccomend reputable breeders or even rescues. My old guy has lost some teeth in his old age, so he gets his teeth ground down at the vets a few times a year, and he was prone to eye infections due to the way his eyelids and lashes developed until a specialist was able to correct it. He had to be neutered for health reasons, but that can be dangerous if not done properly or not given proper aftercare. They're amazing pets and very loving if you treat them well and respect their space.

I own 2 ferrets, and I don't really have an issue with their smell. I don't give them baths super often (because it's unnecessary, and dries out their skin), but they're perfect for me, because we have a couple things in common, we like shiny things, we don't sleep much at night, and we get random bursts of energy. Do research before owning pets, and take care of them properly, it's worth it.

@@Springspin I was on the same page with you until you said 2 females from the same nest. Rabbits don't understand family connection, so having them from the same nest wouldn't matter. Housing two females together will most likely end up with them fighting, sometimes to till one kills the other. Housin two males is even worse. They often fight till death. The best combination is a female and a neutered male. Also, don't buy them from a pet store but adopt (for multiple reasons). But the relevant reason is that just like humans rabbits don't just like any species mate you pare them with. It has to click between the two. They will live with each other for the rest of their lives after all. A shelter will pair two rabbits until the two individuals are content with whomever they get pair with (source: studied to become an animal care taker, months of internship work at an animal rescue center, plus a member of a bunny forum on FB where we advice each other and have bunny experts) If this was common knowledge less instances of rabbits fighting would happen and less of them would end up in shelters. That's why spreading good information is so important :)

I used to have guinea pigs I got them for my 7th birthday, two girls (sisters)which I called Ginger and Black beauty. They both lived pretty long lives though Ginger who we thought was the healthiest died first and very unexpectedly. We didn’t expect Black Beauty to live much longer after that (they were very close) but she ended up living for around three more years, we ended up having to put her down due to an eye infection that wasn’t getting better, but before they put her down the vets said they think she was completely deaf and blind and had been her whole life, we had no idea. I now have a cat called Gem, I love him so much though he does keep getting into trouble, he even got caught in a snare last year (2020) and he fights with some of the other cats in the area.

There are wild animal sanctuaries that specialize in caring for different kinds of wild animals, even very large/complex ones, that need a home and cannot be released.

Sakura, I just wanted to clear up some topics for you, if you got your baby rabbit from a pet store it is not your fault it died, bunnies at pet stores are taken from their mother at a very young age, when they are not ready to start eating solid food. They are bread in large numbers and transported i large cramped places to go to a small living place in a pet store, pet stores also sell such tiny rabbit cages that do not give the rabbits enough room to play. These all cause health issues. As well as the pet stores providing food with way too much sugar for young rabbits. So it’s not actually your fault.

I have a number of snakes, three milksnakes and a ball python. The milksnakes are kinda hard to bond with, cause they're really flighty, but I like to take my ball python out after dinner, and sit with her in my lap while I play games or knit or whatever. We can just vibe for like an hour or so, and then she gets warm enough that she's at her most curious, and I'll take her for tours of the house, to see my parents and such.

Have you looked into the retro pug? They're a cross between a pug and a jack russel to help elongate that squished snout. They have that distinct pug look but are much healthier.

Chinchillas are great pets if you have the space and money to keep them healthy. They live for like 18-20 years (mine is 17), plenty of time to bond and learn their little personalities. I eat breakfast every morning with mine, and let him run around and cuddle after work. My dad made him a big enclosure and these little (safe) wooden puzzles that I hide treats in every once in a while. You can train them to do little tricks like twirling and rolling over. He even went off to college with me once I got a big enough apartment. They're crepuscular so they're awake at dawn and dusk. But I believe the ones sold in pet stores, at least in the US, are irresponsibly bred so they could die young. I got mine from a rescue, he was an orphan meant for the fur trade and was hand raised by the rescue, so he wound up hating other chinchillas. Otherwise it's best to have pairs since they're herd animals in the wild and get lonely.

It's great that you're aware and concerned about the breeding of pugs! I would like to hear your thoughts about the breeding of specialty gold fish, like orandas, telescopes, and bubble eyes for a few examples. Maybe you've already addressed this in another video. In which case, I am sure to come across it soon because I love your stuff, just subscribed, am about to binge your videos all day today :) Thank you for your quality content!

As someone who had rabbits in the past, I am always glad when people opt out of owning them because they are so much work. Way too many people just buy one bunny, stick them in a tiny cage and call it a day. I had 3 bunnies and they had 2 hutches and a big fenced area connecting them. We have a huge yard we had to regularily relocate the rabbit enclosure because they dug up the grass a lot, and also to make sure they got enough sun and shade, according to season. I collected bags of fresh grass and twigs every day and spent a bunch of money on turnips and celery. But I loved caring for them! Sadly they got stolen.

Rabbits, from my experience jump fences to easy. We had an outside enclosure a few years back with a massive chicken whire run and of course a hutch. Within the first year, they had jumped the hill and startesd breeding in the hills surrounding Dunedin. whenever I see a rabbit on a hike, I wonder if it is one of their descendants. Also Soda, do you have chickens???

We used to have rabbits and they were escape artists eventually we let them run free in the backyard with supervision they learned pretty fast where they couldn't go and even when they escaped they wouldn't leave the backyard

In germany they have created a breed of pug called a retromop. They are pugs that have been crossbred with a jack russell terrier to more resemble what pugs would have looked like in the 18th century. I believe its still a work in progress, but the longer snout means its has room in its head for all of its teeth, it can breath properly and its eyes dont bulge out further than its nose and actually fit in its head.

Ferrets actually smell alot even after neutered they still let a smell off occasionally. And neutering can also cause them to develop arsenal disease later in life which is what my current 6 year old baby has he's losing all his fur. Have to keep giving him melatonin daily. When you first get them they also are very mischievous and bite sometimes draw blood takes months to train them not to! Alot of people take them on and get rid when they can't deal with them which is horrible. Cause they are actually very loving and become attached to their owners

Rabbits are better as free range indoor pets. They need a lot of space, but they can be litter trained. The worst part is just making sure cords are off the floor. It's like living in a giant mouse cage with a mouse haha
