One VERY important caveat: Help will only give advantage on ONE attack roll, for ONE ally. If your Berserker Barb buddy with extra attack and the bonus action attack is hitting a target you used Help on, the first attack he makes will be with advantage. I used this incorrectly against some players by throwing 5 orcs at them and putting one orc on Help duty and having them systematically mop up the PCs one-by-one. Very unfair.
@pluralkumquat5 жыл бұрын
It's not even the first attack, it's the very next attack. Meaning if you want Beefy Mc'20strength to have advantage, he better go right after you, or your allies better be super coordinated.

Ah, so you're slowing the already-slow game with unnecessary complications? Great. Sarcastic tone aside, one of your priorities as a GM is to keep the game going and not pause or interrupt the flow as much as you can. That's why you don't stop to look at the PHB, you don't stop to look up what a spell exactly says, and you don't stop to play a more appropriate background tune. Honestly. Try playing fast without unnecessary interruptions and pauses, try this out for at least 10-15 sessions, and see how much better your game is :)

Be any class, take magicinitiate. Learn find familiar, choose owl. Infinite help actions.
@1ferris7784 жыл бұрын
Personally speaking, having seen this exact thing in action as a DM, it can be rather broken. Well, unless, you have minions ready to twat the annoying owl with arrows that is. As it is, I don't allow familiars to provide the help action in combat in my games.
@kaneo14 жыл бұрын

@@1ferris778 I'd say it's generally better to use the games rules to combat mechanical abuse rather than change the rule. I find it lazy and not very thought out when ever i come across a dm who bans or changes rules/mechanics.
@taurelith48674 жыл бұрын
@@vandenburg123 if the game rules are what is allowing for the mechanical abuse to happen the easiest fix is to change them. i dont ban stuff outright but i try to tweak it at the very least so that everyone at the table feels like they are contributing and the encounters are meaningful and require strategizing and proper combat decisions instead of just cheese. Even when it's not about combat some mechanics are just badly thought out, just to make an example: the DM guide rules for crafting magical items would have your level 20 wizard spend 55 years to craft a single item of high rarity or a blacksmith spend a year to make a single plate armor, it's not lazy to make changes if they are properly implemented and thought out and they improve the experience, in fact it should be encouraged.
@vandenburg1234 жыл бұрын
@@taurelith4867 yeah I agree. I wasn't saying it's the easy fix, and your right, tweaking a rule can be a simple solution. Also I wasn't saying it's lazy to do that. I was trying to say that in my experience I have seen it done in poorly thoughtout or lazy ways. Your game your rules, and whatever works for you should be the priority. Just know that changes to the rules aren't always good, though they can be when done right. I do advocate for adapting rules to fit your own game, but I have seen it go badly is all.

Unfortunately for Trevor, Skänk Mäk Gänk is likely to have a clone or two in reserve for situations like this.
@SupLuiKir5 жыл бұрын
He's already way past evil, probably, so turning himself into a lich wouldn't be as big of a downside as usual. Still, I agree, Having secret clone vats spread around the world and a few main facilities hosting hundreds or thousands of clones is objectively better than becoming a lich. Liches have a single phylactery to protect to maintain their immortality, but a Clone user simply has to keep a single vat alive out of an unlimited number of vats that could be anywhere. In order to kill a Clone user, you'd have to find EVERY SINGLE vat and smash it all within a month before confronting your target, and he'll have certainly known you're coming using Glyphs of Warding and all forms of divination enchantments set up on each of his hidey-holes to let him know he's being targeted and his vats are being smashed.

Clone also lets you live on forever (if you have enough of them) in a living body, rather than in an undead one that can't eat, drink, sleep, relieve itself, breathe, and likely can't feel as well (physically and emotionally), as well as offend others with their very existance (ie: Kelemvor, Lathander, Hoar, Torm, Tyr, etc.) so I'd rather take clone any day of the week over lichdom

@@paulgaither It's all about context. In this case the help action is useful because you're giving the big beefy fightstick two shots in one turn, rather than trying to have ghost pig make a (likely much weaker) attack. Even if beefy boi only get a normal hit in, the squishy necromancer is still closer to death than is beefy boi missed his attack and ghost pig got in a much smaller hit. Advantage is rarely about the crit, but rather, about ensuring that the one attack hits (or that you don't fail that save, or that you make that nerve wracking skill test). Critting is a bonus. And honestly, if I'm playing a support-focused character, I'm likely gonna do everything in my power to make sure my beefy boi can get as close to one-shotting the big bad as possible.

I had no Idea that flanking was an optional rule, Aid makes way more sense now.
@stuartconrod83645 жыл бұрын
It's an optional rule and one MOST DMs recommend not playing with. Flanking is such an easy way to get Advantage that it becomes the dominant strategy in combat and devalues most class features that could provide it.
@SodaPopBarbecue5 жыл бұрын
@@stuartconrod8364 Going to be killing flanking in my campaigns,, BRB..
@hannessteffenhagen615 жыл бұрын
@@stuartconrod8364 Yep, for example Kobold's redeeming feature is that they have an easy to get advantage on attacks with nearby allies, gaining advantage is one of the main reason to shove... also, flanking makes it so you end up having to do _really_ awkward and nonsensical positioning for optimal combat. I'd definitely recommend running your games without it.

I could be wrong but you can also assist outside combat, so if your buddy wants to do a skill check like Persuade or Investigate you can give them advantage... At least I think so.
@MrShukaku19915 жыл бұрын
@@ashes2steel As long as the person doing the help has proficiency in that skill they can. It does not work for "on the spot" checks though. Like say, random perception to spot ambushers, or even like, A bard suddenly deciding to seduce a barmaid. Basically, Help is asking your teammate for help, and then working together to solve the issue. You can't ask for help when it must be done "RIGHT NOW"

Another good use of the Help action is for it to be used in combination with the Find Familiar spell. A Familiar can't attack, but can take other actions in combat as normal, such as Help. This can make it a great spell to select with the Magic Initiate feat, helping a Fighter hit while using Great Weapon Master, or potentially guaranteeing that a Rogue gets to Sneak Attack, all without using an action that could have been used to attack.
@PhabioTheHost5 жыл бұрын
works best with variant human as many times a +2 to your primary stat is going to be more valuable in the long run than that specific feat.

Mastermind Rogues can use Help as a bonus action and from a 30 ft distance. Outfit one with a moderate ranged/reach weapon (darts, slings, whips, etc), and they can provide both sneak attack damage and general support for a front line ally. Presumably by distracting the opponent with mind games and sick burns.
