@@SnarkyZazu Poor people were the ones living much shorter lives than today. Rich nobles had superiour nutrition, access to better medical treatment, lots of leisure etc. and could live into their 80s or 90s if they were lucky.

The average life span was lower. But the main Factor was the higher Child mortality. Think of having 5 Children three die before the age of five and two get 80 you would have an average live expectancy below 35. That's one reason why summery statistics can be misleading. Especially when the variance is rarely reported.

fun fact, Kentaro Miura did not base the character Guts in the manga Berserk off of Gotz of the Iron Hand, Miura had never even heard of Gotz until well after he had given his character the metal arm. this is just one of those strange almost insane coincidences that happen in the world.

If you ever come to visit southern Germany and want to see the iron Hands of Götz, they are on display in the museum of Burg Jagsthausen (also called Götzenburg), not far from the city of Heilbronn. In the summer you can also see the play by Goethe there. Quite a show and worth the visit 🙂

@@ColddirectorHe more of a Conan the Barbarian type than Guts though since he made a fortune in kidnapping high ranking lords and made an enemy out of many Imperial cities and towns included religious fanatics hence the nickname Robber Knight, yet due to his thick plot armour he escape Imperial Ban (similar to mark of sacrifice instead of being hunted by daemons, Götz got the whole army of knights, Lords and fanatics on his back) twice and live a rich life with 5 healthy children to carry his name, so Götz is the anti-Guts.

Possibly. We don’t really know where either of his prostheses were made. We only know with reasonably certainty that Hans von Mittelhausen (in Alsace, now part of France), who died in 1564, owned a prosthesis from the same maker.

I love stories like these about disabled men like Götz who rejected a life of comfort and meritocracy he easily could’ve lived and chose instead to keep pursuing glory. He could have retired, and no one would blame him, but he lived for the fight and doesn’t seem the type to piddle through life on pity. In no small way, his tenacity and his own peculiarity earned his place in the annuals of history.

He was one of the inspirations for the evolution of Ash Williams in the Evil Dead franchise. Not simply his hand but also his response to authority and crass retort. With out Gotz we never would have had the perfection of the scene where Ash gets his new hand =)
