Thank you for this. I'm so very close to figuring out how to rig a character in a non traditional toony style, and it's taken me years. It seems great that finally there's a bunch of these tutorials for this method on KZbin; it was dry on this topic for years.

Thank you so much! This is very helpful. I happen to love both Maya and Flash and I’m really happy to be using both in one of my projects 😁

Question: how would you go about doing an eye like this? I was thinking of using a layered shader, one layer for the eyelids, another for the pupils. All of this would be on a flat 2d style eye geometry.

It sounds like that would work. If the eye texture was going onto a flat surface like in this tutorial, you could probably animate eyes and eyelids as one texture. You could animate them on separate layers in Flash and then end up with a single PNG sequence when they're flattened.

Trent Jensen my only problem now is how to set up my nodes and attributes. But it's a good problem to have because there's so many ways to do it. I'm gonna use a bunch of attributes for the mouth shapes and make a bunch of frame by frame mouth animations for my character's various expressions. I already got the pupils to work. If I get it all working I'm totally going to make a tutorial here. If I had any questions do you think you could help me out? You appear to be an educator. Haha!
