To be fair on Shadow’s part, if it ever came out that he was being held illegally for 50 years, experimented on against his will, and then was manipulated into playing the part he did in Gerald’s plan, a good lawyer could probably get some of if not all the charges dropped due to the number of human rights that would be violated. And sure an argument could be made that he is an alien and as such doesn’t have rights, but due to his high intelligence, I think one could make the argument that he could legally classify as the equivalent of a human. Not to mention if he is even being sent to trial in this theoretical situation, he must be treated as human-like to some extent.
