When I say "in 2D it's really easy to animate arms", I just mean in terms of technical issues. There's tons of drawing skills and animation principles in animating 2D characters -- but much of those skills apply to 3D as well, while the technical aspects of animating arms in 3D that I describe in the video don't apply to traditional 2D. I've been a 2D animator my whole life so I know how hard it is! I could have phrased it better, but hopefully you can look past it. Also, FK and IK mean "forward kinematics" and "inverse kinematics." The full names doesn't really matter to animators, but I wanted to mention it here as I should have at least shown the full definitions somewhere in the video. Sorry! -25k views and almost 6.5k subs so far!!- WELP that's gonna get progressively more and more outdated, so why don't I just say a big THANK YOU. It's difficult to describe what a week I've had -- I've been reading every comment and It's super encouraging to know that I'm helping people not only learn animation but, to non-animators, understand and appreciate it. Part of my motivation from the start was to reach people who love animation but have never animated and wanted to understand it better, and it's mindblowing how many comments I've received that fit exactly that. The next few videos will explore some different things (I want to bounce between art, animation, rigging, etc.), but I do plan on doing the next in this "body" series eventually, likely seasonally. Also, the example girl's name is Gimberly! She's inspired by 80's fitness instructors. EDIT: Giving more visibility to my notes above. Also, did you know that editing a comment unpins it? I sure didn't!!
@Fortirus
@Fortirus 2 жыл бұрын
Great job and I wish you all the best! 🥳 The only thing that bothered me throughout the video is that the girl (Gimberly, heh) has a Red on her Left side and a Blue on the Right side. Although I started to study animation and rigging only recently, I'm already used to the fact that usually these colors are reversed for the limbs (Left = Blue, Right = Red, Main body = Yellow). Even when I shoot live video references with myself for our animators, I use this logic (I also use fitness bracelets in these colors 😅). I understand that each team has its own color coding, but is there something behind this decision? Did you do it on purpose or just make it “as usual”?
@doodley3d
@doodley3d 2 жыл бұрын
@@Fortirus Thanks! Good point, I actually don't think I ever realized that. I usually build my rigs with blue/green controls actually, since that's the mGear default in Maya. So I don't tend to associate red/blue with specific sides myself, just a sense of keeping them separated. But I think I remember wanting to have them match the most common association, I do see the "left blue, right red" a lot. If I had to guess how that happened, when I was designing her, I tend to mirror my artwork often and sometimes the mirrored version becomes the "default" to me. So I imagine I probably designed it with the "correct" colors in mind, but eventually ended up with them mirrored. Since I'm still super early in these videos and I'm going to update Gimberly's rigs anyways, I think I might mirror them and her look in this video will end up an anomaly. Thank you for the suggestion!

@@doodley3d oh, thanks for the ansver! Yeah, I also saw the blue/green and green/red coding a few times. It's funny that although I have never done character design or rigging (with the exception of Control Rig in UE5, but this is different story), for some reason the first thing I thought was that at some stage her design/model was just a mirrored - looks like I was right 😆 And about "fixing" her - I don’t think that it would bother anyone else, and even if so, then you can simply say that this is her feature and character quirk 😏

Excellent tutorial on the concepts. Easy to understand and yet goes into a fair bit of depth into how FK and IK differ. As it's far too easy to discard FK in rigs once people know what IK is. Also blended with high quality 3D animation which is both smooth and pleasing to the eye, assisting in visualizing the concepts. Good work. Approved.

You really be out here animating the part of Gimberly’s body for the tutorial but also going the extra mile and animating every other facet of her being with not just making it all natural and make sense for the action you’re focusing on but with so much extra flair and personality. I can’t wait for the episode(s) on faces or whatnot so we can hear what kind of voice you manage to get for her! Lip sync is something that always sticks out to me with animation, as the act of talking is one of the most essential yet one of the most potentially boring things to look at, and seeing animators make talking NOT boring is just… *chef’s kiss* So I can’t wait for that, but even without that she’s so… good! And just a flex of your own skill, as well as how powerful the things you’re explaining can be. Your own avatar is also cute as all heck, I LOVE characters that talk THROUGH their facial hair like that.

This is an excellent tutorial that I could recommend to everyone who wants to learn 3D animation. I started switching to 3D animation recently (by knowing the basics and having animation experience for years) And I think the FK/IK types were something I was missing, since almost all models I animated yet were on a FK basis, it’s more easier to know that I can switch between the two modes. Thank You 😊

I love how this is good not just for animators looking for help (along with programmers who have to create software for animators to use) but also in helping laypeople to get even more appreciation for animated media. You don’t have to have a practical use for it in your life or any experience or prior knowledge at all with any of the tools or processes involved in animation to enjoy, understand, and appreciate this video. It helps that it all feels alive and unique. Gimberly gives off the feel of a posable mannequin (with clear references to aspects of 3D computer animation) while also feeling alive and human with emotions and personality. And then your avatar looks like a simple doodle but still also feels like even more (and, if it wasn’t for my personal experience with coding and my love of 3D anime that looks 2D with the thick borders and mostly flat shading, I wouldn’t have even realized that it’s actually a 3D model, which adds depth that people can feel without even recognizing it), and it’s great at conveying emotions even with minimal parts to work with. And both are adorable!

One of the most interesting things to me is that in this video doodley’s voice acting isn’t very good, but it’s one of my favorite videos of his, including his later titles. The visual demonstrations work wonders in representing everything he says in such a way that makes it incredibly easy to understand. I love the idea of using animation to teach…….. animation (or anything at all) Also, when I first watched the video, it was super interesting compared to every other animation video on the market. Doodley treads this line DIRECTLY in the middle of tutorial and video essay that makes me feel empowered to try animation more that either of the former EVER could, breaking down every animation you’ve ever seen into small robust understandable chunks. Keep up the amazing work Doodley! You’re an inspiration to us all!

I'm going to need to consume... Many much more basic tutorials on how to even use software like this before this is immediately useful to me. But I feel I grok things better now. Thank you.

I was struggle with translating emotion into an animation especially when it comes to emotions I don’t react with personally, and knowing how and where the bones should move is such a huge step forward. it was such an awesome video I’m going to watch the rest of your stuff.

I FREAKING LOVE THIS VIDEO AAAAA Seriously though, you, Jayfoo and Melanie (+ kamone) really nailed it with this well explained video. I really enjoyed how simple and effective this tutorial on arms. It goes into detail while also giving that detail a reason to be there. This helped learn a bit more about animating arms. I’m looking forward to your next video on the series. Also, your character (OC I guess?) Gimberly is awesome. She’s cool.

2:46 this was the brain thing, btw i actually used sfm before and had problems controlling it, but after seeing this even if its nothing related to sfm, some how it can really help for things with the animation, i don't think there is an FK or IK button but still you can activate it and deactivate it in different ways Edit: ima dumbass, its a TYPE of way to animate "FK,IK" for example you can activate a rig for a character and their hand would most likely reperesent IK, their hand locks in place during the animation.

Watched this two minutes before I needed to run to class thinking "it'll be fine I'll pause it in time". I in fact, did not pause it in time, and realized this video was way more engaging to me than I thought it would be especially since I found out it was about 3D animation which I don't do. Finishing this video now like way after class, Its pretty neat seeing how some of the things I'm seeing or hearing help with my idea of 2D animation as well. This is amazing, everything is so smooth, bouncy and so pleasing to watch and see, subscribed.

I'm not sure if I watched this because I'm interesting in the concept of becoming an animator, or because of the smooth movements the girl makes

I’m not even (or want to be) a 3D animator, this is just so fun to watch. It feels so much like just a cartoon. But I know for a fact I will NEVER forget what and IK and FK are.

The quality you achieved in this video is incredible. Its adorable to see the 3d character reacting to the 2d narrator. Your voice is entertaining and soothing. The music is pleasant. Your script has a nice balance of humor and serious.

HOLY CRAP! I never even done 3d rigging of any kind outside of maybe animating 2d puppets on a 3d plane in after effects, but the amount of detail in this tutorial without all the fluff and the flow of the information is so incredibly high quality, I had to give you a sub. Thanks for making such great content!

As someone who uses a node-based 2D animation app, this tutorial was surprisingly helpful, especially with that reactions part! Also, I love the character you use to make these examples animated! It incorporates the cardinal directions’ colors in a 3D program, the gray and… darker gray missing textures, I love it a lot!
