Cosign for a coworker? HELL NO. Veronica is right - it's rude and disrespectful to ask a coworker for something like that. It's pretty much guaranteed that Veronica would be left holding the bag if she bought into this situation. If someone needs a cosigner, they're too far gone already, and you don't need to be a part of that.

I was forced to have a cosigner when I bought my last car, because I didn't have great credit. My dad refused, but my brother stepped in to help. He never once had to pay a dime and I paid off the entire loan a year early. Not everyone who needs a cosigner is going to put them into the position of having to pay. I see the other side of the coin too, but just wanted to share.

By asking them to be a co-signer, you are putting them in the potential position of having to pay.

@@fakshen1973 Exactly, we are on the same page! I wouldn't expect anyone to take this single post from a stranger and say "wow that's amazing, I think I'm gonna cosign for my (friend, boss, coworker, neighbor) in fact, I hope no one would do that. I just wanted to share a story to show that there are exceptions like you said. No malicious intent here! :3

I agree, there is a valid reason why cosigning exists as a practice, but I don't think it makes sense to ask that of a coworker.

Veronica does a great job here. If she wanted to refer her colleague to more info in the same vein, I highly recommend the SNL sketch "Don't Buy Stuff You Can't Afford."

I cosigned for my daughter's first car because she had no rotating credit. No dealership would work with her simply because she had no "rotating creadit on her report history" (despite her having 3 jobs while also a student and single mother of an autistic child). She has since paid off her car a full 2 years early and now is off to a great start in building up her credit. I'm a very proud mom😊

does this actually happen? Who actually expects other people to cosign for them as a quick favor? That's nuts. Yo bro can we open joint bank accounts together and can you sign these papers that says you're liable for all the car accidents I might get into too. Just do it for free for me pls.

This happens a lot more than you think, especially with relatives, because family is in the best position to put the bite on you for things like this.

Yep silverhammer is totally right, you'd usually expect requests for cosigning and guilting from family and friends, especially close relatives like parents or siblings rather than a random stranger or coworker. It's definitely an "annoying" situation to be in for lack of a better word.

'does this really happen?' You betcha! There are ALWAYS people looking for a sucker to run a game on. There are people who spend their entire lives scheming to 'get over' on whatever poor schnook that wanders into their sights. And if you truly knew who was telling you this, you would have a much greater appreciation for my words.

If someone asks a coworker to co-sign as a favor ...it's clear on several levels that person doesn't understand credit.

BTW, this includes rental leases. I see way too many people cosign or roommate with someone that is not financially stable and end up getting an eviction on their record even if they never lived in the property. As an aside, I have generally seen that people with no credit history are very reliable since they don't use credit to fund their lifestyle, so not everyone that needs a cosigner is irresponsible.

Great message, did actually meet a young guy who thought a co- signer was just a person " vouching for you" being honest, trustworthy since you had no prior credit. But also to his credit no pun meant, he also said, Why would you borrow it(money) if you weren't going to pay it back?

Hell no. I co sign for no one. I don’t even do it for family members. I taught my kids to take care their business so they don’t need a co-signer and get it done on their own. Hullooooo?

The excuse they give is usually, "I can't ask my family, I'd die of embarrassment!" Uhhh...and it isn't embarrassing to ask someone you work with? What they're really saying is, "I asked my family and they told me to go pound sand, so I'm getting desperate!"

Some people just don’t have families. The real entitlement is people who have at least one parent that cares and helps.
@xaenon
@xaenon 3 күн бұрын
@fakshen1973 If they 'can't ask family', there is usually a damned good reason, and it has nothing to do with 'embarrassment'. Look, it's actually fairly simple: There are people out there who spend their entire lives figuring out ways to con people. For them, better a 'casual acquaintance' than family. They con you into co-signing, they drive away with the goods and default on the loan, and who's left holding the debt and risking their credit rating? YOU. A friend of mine offered to co-sign for me one time in order to help me secure a lower interest rate on a loan. I was astonished that he offered, but I refused to let him do it. It wasn't that I intended to default on the loan. The job market was really not very stable at the time. I was concerned that a situation might arise that might force me to default or fall in arrears, and I didn't want him to have to deal with that.

I co-sign a vehicle that was over $80,000 and I didn’t make close to that but I had excellent credit and it was because of my dad I did it. He used to have excellent credit but then once he started multiple businesses, I’m not sure what happened but his credit plummeted, even though his businesses were successful. He paid the 5 year loan with in a year in a half was never late and boosted my credit more because it basically look like I paid off a $80,000 car and it just so happened that I came upon to some money and was able to pay off my vehicle shortly after that was a seven year loan. After that At the time, my credit was immaculate. I got credit card offers out the ass. My dad has better credit now after paying off his business loan. I’m not sure what the whole spill was on why it went down in the first place but my dad has always been responsible with money has always paid his bills on time so I took the chance and lucky for me. It actually benefited me end. So there are at least some cases where you won’t get screwed over, but I would always tell someone to think on it and know that person very well before just making a rash decision that could affect you financially.

Co-signing these days is a HUGE personal risk! I never had to co-sign for any of my children. I did open a bank account for them and gave them tips on how to create awesome credit. They never had a credit issue or a need to place their parents at additional financial risk. As far as non-family, go pound sand! No real friend of mine would ask, so I have no problem telling someone I thought was a friend NO.

It’s bullshit when you need a co-signer for a rental property. I just got into medical debt and my credit score is terrible not due to fault of my own. I’m going to need a co-signer to find a place to live again.

My mum risked her home for me. Man, I was so entitled! My mum should have said 'no'. But Dad backed Mum up... and luckily things worked out, but PHEW! (The bank couldn't give my husband and me a loan to put a house on our land until there was a CT. And the cross lease land couldn't get a CT without a house, and we couldn't buy a house without a loan.) But still, we shouldn't have asked, and my parents should have said 'no'. I'm embarrassed that we asked now. I'm with Veronica.
