Hello Andrea! Wonderful Lip Sync tutorial and just brilliant videos throughout. Yours would be among the most well-balanced and enjoyable to watch animation tutorials I've come across. Wish I was half as good a presenter as you are :) If you're unfamiliar with our work come over to our channel to have a look and then jump to our site to grab a copy of the tools. If nothing else, Timeline Block To Symbol will make your life easier when you need to nest a bunch of things the next time and will retain the position. There's a lot more... I've also written quite a lot about digital cutout animation, character rigging, symbol registration and so on. I believe that some of my writings might be of interest. Best regards - Nick

Have you worked with the new auto lip sync tool in Animate? I'm curious to see how accurate it is and how much of an impact it would have on your workflow for something like this. Thanks for everything you're putting into your channel!
@AndreaGerstmann
@AndreaGerstmann 5 жыл бұрын
No I haven't worked with it... it's not the first auto lip sync tool to be developed so I just assume it's bad like the others. Generally the lip sync these kinds of things output is better than nothing but not good by any standard. Professional studios don't really use it at the moment.
@Moovieboy
@Moovieboy 5 жыл бұрын
@@AndreaGerstmann Totally understand. Still, for workflow speed, I wonder if using auto lip sync would be similar to KZbin's auto captioning or Acrobat making editable text from a scanned document. Meaning, I find it takes less time to fix the mistakes of the automation than to put in each word or frame myself. Thanks again!
@AndreaGerstmann
@AndreaGerstmann 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've never worked with it so I don't know. It's possible that it can make a decent starting point to then adjust to your liking, assuming the output allows for that. I know games have been known to use auto lip syncs. They also tend to do less takes in voice acting record sessions. It's definitely a matter of: is the quality from the time put in worth it to the project, and what is the quality difference.
@WilMau
@WilMau 5 жыл бұрын
@@AndreaGerstmann I've tested it: I like it a lot! It's not perfect (as you said) but it's a really good guide for the lipsync timing and shapes, and sometimes it's dead on! And it's really fast too! It does like 1 minutes of lip sync in 10 seconds! Which let's you worry on other sides of the animation like the actual animating ! I hope with IA and all, they'll be able to figure out even better so that we don't have to waste energy doing lipsynching (they're not too far)

Yeah! I like doing small things because I can finish them. I personally think of a joke or a funny idea, isolate it down to the minimum and then try to go all out and make it really awesome so I can be proud of it. When it's too big it's hard to make it good cause it takes so long. It's easy to loose steam and give up or start something else. Especially if you are doing it by yourself in your spare time, and you have a life and a job and everything. I got 'discovered' in the industry because of my personal short animations. They still get me job opportunities. People care more if its good then if it's long.

awesome video! I would love to see your opinion of the lip sync tool. I haven't played with Animate CC enough to know much about it. (just starting to dabble in illustrating) I've made some phonetic mouths but wondered how you felt as someone who has created many animations before how good of a job the new tool at putting the mouths at the correct parts of the audio clip. at 3:43 in your video you can see the lip [sync button] which will allow you to select your different phonetic mouths and which clip you are trying to analyze. Once again I loved this video and because of how you show your work I would love to hear you review the new Lip Syncing feature.
@AndreaGerstmann
@AndreaGerstmann 5 жыл бұрын
I haven't personally used the auto lip sync tool. My job currently is doing storyboards on BoJack Horseman so I'm only doing lip syncs in my personal work at the moment. But I don't see the lip sync animators at work using it either and it is a Flash show. I have seen some videos of people trying it out and it looks like the big limiting factor is the number of mouths it uses is a set amount. I don't think there is a way to switch expressions within the mouth pack. I think you have to swap symbols for this which isn't too bad i guess. And also computers are notoriously bad at understanding speech... so it just guesses the wrong mouth shape half the time and the timing can also be weird, but you can use it as a starting point and fix all the weird parts if you want. I have seen raw auto lip syncs used a lot in video games where there can be a lot of talking and they are okay with it not being perfect since it saves a bunch of time.

@AndreaGerstmann
@AndreaGerstmann 5 жыл бұрын
I currently have a 22" wacom cintiq but I started out with a wacom intuos 3 tablet in the 6x8" size. the biggest difference being that the cintiq has a screen and the intuos tablet didn't, so I learned to animate with the disconnect of seeing your drawing not where your hand is. The cintiq in comparison is awfully nice but it's pretty expensive and I couldn't afford it until I got my first big animation job working at Nickelodeon.

@AndreaGerstmann
@AndreaGerstmann 5 жыл бұрын
There's an auto lip sync feature that's new to flash. I don't see it used in TV animation. People who do lip syncs professionally are super fast with quality results. If you use the auto lip sync you still need to make your mouth chart, and the auto lip sync only recognizes 12 mouth shapes so you are definitely limited. It's also not going to make a quality lip sync, not really recognizing the sounds perfectly so putting in the wrong mouth kinda often and the timing can be funky. But depending on what you are doing... that might be okay. You can also tweak the output if you want. I have seen auto lip syncs used in games and you can tell there's something off about it.

@AndreaGerstmann
@AndreaGerstmann 5 жыл бұрын
That is a voice I can make. I didn’t alter it at all digitally. Generally the only things I do is noise reduction, equalization and compression which doesn’t alter the voice, just makes it clearer and the volume more regular. There are ways you can alter the pitch like auto tune but I haven’t done it. Usually you can hear that it’s not natural.

I use a 22" wacom cintiq... and it's not in your price range. Looks like they go for 1500USD these days. I got mine 5 years ago for 1700 with a discount for working in the industry. But you don't NEED a fancy cintiq. I didn't get one until I had a job at Nickelodeon. I got into the industry using a wacom tablet. Tablets are cheaper within your price range, but they take some getting used to. Drawing one place and seeing what you drew somewhere else is really hard but you get used to it eventually. The big cintiq is easy in comparison, but I personally like a tablet over a cintiq with a small screen. The small citiqs are still out of your price range (700USD) and Hunching over a small screen will give you back problems. Not to mention that your toolbars will take up most of your screen, so the drawing is even smaller. With a tablet you can at least sit normally and you will be able to see what you are drawing if your screen is a decent size. Sketching however is near impossible but I used to just sketch on paper and scan it or take a photo. There are also cheaper wacom alternatives like huion. I have never used huion I cannot vouch for them. I know it is not the industry standard, but I think of it as student vs professional grade paints. Often it's good enough for your purposes to use student grade but if you are a professional and can afford it you should probably get the professional grade for the quality. Do research before buying a cheaper alternative. If it doesn't have working drivers it's basically unusable, other problems will probably be tolerable but annoying.
@AndreaGerstmann
@AndreaGerstmann 5 жыл бұрын
also unless the wire is broken wacom tablets basically never break, so if you see a used one for cheap snach it up. I think mine is 10 years old and still works fine, I've spilled food all over it and everything.

Bam animation brought me here xD. I would like to ask you something if it's okay. Im living in Germany and want to be an Animator myself but I have no idea what to do. My goal is to be a tv animator as well but I have no clue how to or even what to do to get there. I'm really struggling to find the path towards such a job that I even consider going abroad to study or whatever. I hate my country for being not considering people who want to study or get into the field of animation. I only know really expensive schools where I'm not even sure if the field of study would give me the opportunity to work as animator. If you read this:D and consider helping me out or give me some information, that would be so freaking awesome and great. Btw I love your channel hahaha. I learn a lot of new things here
@AndreaGerstmann
@AndreaGerstmann 5 жыл бұрын
There is always a path to get into animation even though it's not often clear. I know a bunch of animators from across the pond but I don't know the specifics of how they got in the industry. Where I'm from (in Canada) there are a number of colleges that teach animation where you can get a certificate diploma, but not many who are certified that can issue a degree in animation. In order to work abroad a degree is far more useful in order to get a work visa. I personally didn't study animation in school. I do have a bachelor of fine art degree, which helps me work outside of Canada, but I learned fine art stuff not animation. I worked with some animation students and they recommended a book called "the animator's survival kit" it's a good one to pick up in order to learn the fundamentals, but it teaches traditional animation, you still have to learn the computer programs on your own. Hope this helps.
