Yeah. There have been several times when I realized something wasn’t working but I would push on and get the next bit out. Then I go back and edit and realize that it wasn’t working because I didn’t set the scene up enough. That’s what was bugging me. I took a writing course by a published author who said that when he wrote the third book in the series he was almost done it when he realized that it wasn’t sounding right. Too many car chases and a helicopter fight, and it was just more outlandish than the first couple books. So he finished writing it, then went back to edit and threw out everything but the first chapter and the last chapter, the. Rewrote the whole thing and liked it much better

Masters will tell you true secrets. Teachers only repeat what they heard. Listen to master storytellers and not teachers. @@Skitdora2010 I've spent the last three years in an artschool learning animation, including storyboard and storytelling. Every single teacher we met already had a career in a domain, like Sébastien piquet that worked on puss in boots 2, or our 3D animation teacher that worked on the minions movie and Sing 2 (3 years, 7k/year, and we only got to learn with her for 4 days. Don't ever trust artschool programs) If i learned something about writing a story, it's that the way you do it doesn't matter as long as you like it. If you try to find a way, you're gonna get stuck on points. If you just like what you're thinking about, it's gonna be fun to do and watch. The more a story is made for money, the less interesting it gets. That's why students projects generaly suffers from plot holes or some kind of issues, since the school is asking you to do it, sometimes forcing a style or a theme on your team, you lose a bit of passion in your project. (I also learned that when you try to do something fun or comical, schools willing to present student's work in festivals will avoid you because they think that because it's comedy, it's not as good as anything else. And i'm talking about a really good animation i saw from another school. They chose another animation with pretty landscapes but no story and poorly animated characters instead, because it was "more serious" . The comedy movie team went to the extent of making a song for the ending. They made everything on Blender. I think the name was Lost control, a guy cleaning the windows of his spaceship that's about to crash on asteroïds.)

its not really fake. its not like this is bad advice. its just not an iron clad rule set. it may be something her boss had pinned up somewhere. it may be what she learnt in school. its good things to do if youre stuck. they arent even really rules, theyre just advice. knowing how a story is going to end will help you beef up the middle. if the answer turns out to be the magical stones that character x has then you will have character x appear with these stones and question it or what they do (this is an incredibly simple example) they may even light up or act strangely when they are close to the answer. you dont want to fully give it away but nodding to those who know the ending throughout is a good way to get people to love the story the second time round

its a great tip. it works well especially in who done it style things, if theres going to be an end twist you need to have planned it. most serial shows will write a season finaly first so they can work towards it and add bits in. although it can break if its too far off, how i met your mother is a great example of "maybe change the ending" everyone hated how it ended because they wrote too far in advance. sure its all clever with costume colours and hints to the mother throughout. but the ending was set in stone from day 1 and the show took too many turns away from that.

That means it's a personal thing she did that others didn't. She is not Pixar. The rumor was that *Pixar* keeps a list not a single individual. 🤷‍♀️ Therefore it's not true. A single person isn't Pixar. There would have to be more than one person that uses her list, keywords being "her list" for it to be a Pixar list of things they do. It would have to be used by an entire team of employees for it to be something Pixar does and it's not. Next time you should pay attention to the words being spoken instead of trying to be a snob in the comments. 🤭

I think you are misunderstanding it. Just because you have an end in mind doesn't mean you can't change the end. You are ALWAYS supposed to be able to change the story while making it. Meaning you should make the ending first. But having a clear goal can be a huge help when writing.
@doloresgronenberg5882

A lot of bad stories also come from not having a clear goal in mind and making a big mess with no head or tail, the idea and it's what this advice implies is to have a clear goal in mind, something to work to achieve, an ending (which is the finish line and very important to the story, an ending can ruin a whole story) or important future event that you can change midway if you change your mind about what you want the story to be or how you want to develope it or if you find another one that you like more

49:10 I think the creators were pretty dang deliberate with these events happening outside the movies as jabs at the movie industry over time. Especially the one with Stinky Pete, being segregated at the Oscar’s/rear-ended to not receive the accolade of your work, and the clone thing being a metaphor that you can be easily replaced. Plus also the fact some lead actors would be relegated to smaller roles in other films to find work after their main films finished. And it’s not just Pixar, it’s other animation studios like Laika that are all facing these same issues behind the scenes (I don’t even want to fathom the rabbit hole of Laika with how they use MULTIPLE copies to THOUSANDS of their characters). This whole can of worms you opened up is not terrifying, but pretty dang depressing 😥

I’m not gonna lie but a lot of that stuff on the list sounds very useful….. and stuff I might even use now for future when I get back into game designing

I watched this with low volume and didn't hear the switch from the real voice to the AI voice and back so I lost my mind trying to figure out if it was AI or not.

It’s not wrong it’s just sound advice. It’s a good way of doing game development too - do the final boss first because you will usually have all your abilities by that point. Then work backwards and figure out how the player earns each ability.

I can tell you a rule that Pixar does use in almost every one of their movies (well the ones that are good, anyway). It's called the 5-Minute Rule. Basically, they establish the main protagonist's internal conflict and why it exists in the first 5 minutes or so of a given movie.

I think it' silly for Pixar for making storytelling guides/tutorials when their stories are pretty basic, straightforward and predictable. They aren't known for writing good stories, they have incredibly good animation, but the storytelling is aimed at kids and young teens.

Why is there a real recorded voice over as well as a text to speech one? Couldn't the real dude voice everything?

basically, it's good advice but it isn't the end-all-be-all. In the wise words of Captain Barbosa, "They're more of guidelines than actual rules"

So some random artist just decided to speak for everyone at Pixar and lie about it being official rules in order to get tons of likes and retweets, but really she was just making shit up on the spot? Yeah, that sounds about right.

Ok, as a novel writer, i can confidently say following number 7: "come up with your ending before your middle", is horrible advice. A lot of people dont know this, but when writing a story, it usually starts to take its own shape. Its kind of like it starts to lead the way the story should go, and you write it. Ive had many times where i thought the story was going to go one way, and it went another, and it feels so much more natural that way. The fastest way to butcher a story is to start with the end.
