He wears clothes just like how those in Ghost in the shell with cybernetic and full cyber bodies still eat They don't need to eat but they choose to eat. The new kind of food that is made for them mimic normal foods is tasteless but it still helps keep the memories of what it is to be human. Just like how his clothes may make him look dorky but it makes him feel like he is still human or free will and not some mindless machine....Show some pity for the poor guy Sage

I do enjoy the character concepts of Deunan and Briareos. Two damaged war vets that are unshakably bound by their deep feelings for one another with a long history behind them that we don't see. Briareos bothered by his status as a cyborg and trying to live as human as he can, but Deunan not really being bothered at all but sometimes showing hints of being deeply afraid of losing him again. Deunan being spunky but also serious. At a core level they are very compelling, albeit held back sometimes by some executions of those ideas over the years.

The 2004 remake did a better job of explaining the back story to Deunan and Briareos.

You forgot one thing. Olympus was built by Bioroids, which are genetically created and programed humans. Then we have the humans and the cyborgs, which are wounded humans which are keep alive by robotics. This, there are two type of beings in this world. Humans, and the controllers of Olympus, Bioroids.
@stanleyteriaca21848 жыл бұрын
Hairspray is a Bioroid also. Which means she is not exactly human. That is why she can still hear after having a pistol fired near her ear. Which is my BS reasoning. I want this DVD.

So let me get this straight: Olympus has no unemployment, free healthcare, a literal embodiment of a welfare state where you can lead a safe and happy life without fear of impoverishment and being guaranteed security, and people hate it? I'm pretty certain all the people in the world who live on the streets, go hungry, have no access to medicine and are in constant fear of being killed would disagree with the view of that being the ideal way of life.

Manga Entertainment video releases, those were good days of my anime fan youth. :) The OVA was a cheap tie-in for the early volumes of the manga which at the time was a big success and very popular. The anime was made without Shirow's involvement, and it shows a lot. All the flash, none of the substance. The Greek mythological references are intentional, and NOT hipster tongue-in-cheek. Olympus is a deliberate showcase for The Future in an otherwise crapsack world. Hecatonchiros means "hundred-handed", and refers in-story to Briareos's onboard augmented senses and hackerware which can theoretically let him run an aircraft carrier by himself! (Not that the OVA story used that capability in any way.) BTW Briareos is a cyborg, a modified human, not an android. He is still fully human at his core, and he acts like it without being the stereotypical Cyberpunk ticking time bomb.

There is one small problem with your argument.. An android is an 100% artificial construction (biodroids) a cyborg is a 100% real human with artificial parts strapped to them. He is a cyborg, the show doesn't say how much is bunny but and how much is human but human food and human organs suggests hes at least got lungs that work, organs that work and this is not an android. In the manna however basically his head, torso, and some of his lower organs survived.

This is also why he wears cloths and the like its an attempt to feel somewhat human again.

IIRC, in the manga it says Briareos wears clothes because he was once totally human and that the current robot body he has, has a thin membrane over it connected to his spinal column that allows him to feel things as if he had skin again. So he wears clothes because it makes him still feel human and not totally robotic, like the tongue man in AD Police, or Motoko in GitS (who users her charm bracelet to similar effect).

The one thing I remember most about Manga Entertainment was how it had this stable of terrible (or at least terrible looking) OVAs that it would include a roll-call of trailers for on other, better DVDs that you ended up buying. One nitpick to get off my chest first thing Sage, the clothes on Briareos really aren't that weird, it's more for HIM then for the police force/society. He's still a human being being despite having a clearly non-human form, so it makes sense for some measure of human vanity and modesty is still practiced by him for his own humanity. Other then that, yeah this is a piece of crap, I could probably enjoy a little of the action but it's definitely a poor excuse for an anime. Good review!

I always thought that Briareos only had his upper torso replaced with cybernetics (because he was severely injured and they didn't have more sophisticated parts to replace him with) but kept his internal organs and lower body (albeit reindforced to hold himself up) so he's still human and still has to eat. Spider's motivation would make more sense as a survivor's guilt complex, imagine you've just been pulled out of a blasted hellscape that forced you to do unspeakable things to survive and now you're in as close to paradise as reality can get. You don't feel like you deserve it and having fought for everything you've ever had it feels like the setup to a cruel punchline, like the moment you relax it'll all get taken away so you're terrified of going soft and ending up worse off than you were before. Also indignant that all your effort and skills ultimately amounted to nothing, that this prosperity was just given to you out of the blue, when you've had to fight for everything having something given to you feels like an insult to your past self.

RE: the extra swearing - I think that's also meant to be a 'placeholder' for when the respective lengths of the English dub and the lip-flaps drawn for the Japanese one don't match up, so for example "-fuckin'-" can be slipped in as a one (or in a pinch two) syllable filler, or "...shit." as a one-word remark where there might not be an English equivalent. I fuckin' agree though, the cocksukin' unnecessary swearing can often be goddamn unnatural sounding!
@JoshuaEFinley8 жыл бұрын
Sage, you are wrong. We do not all struggle to attain Utopia. Many of us struggle for the opposite. We struggle for freedom. Utopia is indeed a gilded cage for once you achieve it then you have nothing left to strive for. Ignorance is bliss and any new idea introduced into a Utopia creates chaos thusly destroying the façade. While Utopia is a noble and quite possible goal I would rather be an eagle soaring freely and getting into fights with other birds than a worker bee who doesn't know any better until something upsets me. That is what the better people of the US continue to fight to stand for and why the US constitution is better than any potential one world socialist government. Even if you get to pick your cage it is still a cage, but that seems to be what the liberal half is pushing for. A much prettier cage where everyone is forced to get along and be happy might sound good, but at some point we stop being alive and just keep living. I have lived a miserable life most of my life and I would not have it any other way because the bad parts like when my mother split my dad's head open with her high heel shoe while he held her off the ground by her throat against the wall, or all of the times I went hungry because I couldn't find a job only make the good parts worth it. You live, you learn, you love, you yearn. In this case the seemingly pretentious anime had it right. You had it wrong.
@JoshuaEFinley8 жыл бұрын
Even a person who has everything may want for more out of life. It is not natural to be happy with your direction in life all of the time. My favorite example of this is the movie Wall-e. The ship they were on was a Utopia indeed, but it was hardly a good life. Not everyone has the same ideas and it would be wrong to make everyone be happy. I would take neither the crappy death zone or the utopia provided for me, but I would choose to build my own house in the wild rather than stay in the warm safe cage on a pedestal.
@Green-Raccoon7776 жыл бұрын
All the anime needed to do was explain why people want freedom. Why does everyone outside the guilded cage despise it? Why would they perfer their miserable existence over the supposed comforts of their worst adversary? If these questions were answered, then this would be a much better anime.

The issue with a utopian civilization other then the fact that it is impossible of course is that the citizens will lose their will to develop. Plato said it best, "necessity is the mother of invention." In a world where our lives are fully supported and we have no need to invent, or imagine we will, with time, lose our minds. Mankind like all other animals must fight against odds at all times to better themselves. If we ever hit a wall it may very well be our end. With said the best thing for these people to do is just make a separate city and build a free market system and try to compete with Olympus, not destroy the place.

Dude, if you wrote this anime, it would be much better than it is now.

This was dubbed in the 90's, Not the 80's I seen this on the big screen at a con in 91. It was all in Japanese. Yes, people were shaking heads and asking questions about it senseless. I was expecting something like Akira, and Bubblegum Crisis. Blade Runner maybe, but we got Fighting crime in the future "COPs"! the animated show .
