ADV was pretty much all I watched when I started getting deep into anime around the year 2000. Compared to what else was available to me at the time, ADV always had the best dubs. Truth be told, I still think they did some excellent work, and frankly I don't take issue with them re-using the same small pool of actors. I just don't get all the hate for them, they provided a ton of material for budding anime fans and, let's face it, our subculture owes them a lot. I especially don't get the hate for Tiffany Grant. She's a great actress who voiced one of the most iconic anime characters in history. Ditto for Amanda Win Lee and Spike Spencer (Who, by the way, has a hell of a gift for being able to pull off a little boy voice at his age). And don't start on the "Evangelion was bad" BS, because everyone loved it back then and a bad series wouldn't spawn a positive legacy that lasts to this day.

Name changes aside. Atragon is now a ship class. The first (Atragon) is the proven prototype, the second (Ra) is a heavier class hence the super, the third (Gotengo) is the modernized recent version. Its like space battleship Yamato, it has four based on the first, which makes the Yamato a ship class. Even the real Yamato is just as much a ship class as it is the ship itself.

In a Manga UK podcast they said that Japanese licenses used to tell them that a show or film that had bombed, was really popular in order to get some return on it. Or in some cases bolt a successful title onto a failed one as Sage said. Though I have also heard they used to deliberately pick shows that had bombed, because the license was cheaper.

I’m sorry but when it comes to the name I have to disagree with you. The target fans are clearly fans of the 1963 film, specifically those in America. Now you might go “Wait this movie has fans?!” Well yes… Godzilla fans. The Goten-go (the ship in Atragon) is a warship that frequently is put in Godzilla media it has been in countless video games, a few TV shows, and would later be in Godzilla: Final Wars. Also the Goten-go had a short name change to the Goten and was put in the 1977, WAR IN SPACE. The Goten-go has a mini film series going on here. Also in the original book Undersea Warship the Goten-go is called the Lightning bolt. So with the name changing from Lightning Bolt to Goten-go to Goten and with the 1963 English name being Atragon the new name being “Ra” isn’t much of a surprise due to its constant name changes. Also by this time the name “Atragon” became more of a name to refer to the story rather than the film.
@Kuudere-Kun6 жыл бұрын
I just watched Atragon and found this looking for KZbin videos on it. I repeatedly thought watching the movie that it could benefit from an Anime remake, but that would be getting a full season, hopefully two cores, not an OVA that has even less run-time then the original film. Not that it matters since this plot doesn't resemble that film much at all.

Umm, does Japan have a thing for re-skinning the Yamato? They made into a space ship, and a submarine, and I'm guessing a bunch of other things. I don't get it. The ship was thrown away on a suicide run at the pacific fleet at Okinawa and a couple hundred dive bombers found it and sank it before it even got close. It only was involved in 1 surface engagement with other warships before it's sinking at Leyte Gulf, where it ended up running away from destroyers and jeep carriers that had no reasonable chance of sinking it. Yes, the Japanese admiral didn't know that, and the skies were filling up with ground support aircraft at that point, which made him think that Taffy 3 was just the picket screen of the main American carrier fleet, but the Yamato seemed kind of useless in the grand scheme of things.
@Crawldragon8 жыл бұрын
I think the Japanese just like naming things Yamato. It's a word that represents the majority ethnic group in Japan, a province from which their royal family used to rule, and a few other various parts of Japanese culture. It seems logical to name influential military ships after this, the way Americans sometimes name their ships after American ideals and symbols like Liberty, Constitution, and Endeavor.

Yamato sounds nice.
