Adulthood is a joke, but anime and manga reminds us that absurdity can help us get through it.

Well, I went and commented below to others but bartender, hataraki man, and a few others kind of helped to scratch that itch for more adult characters and adult life. Also shirobako has some good scenes that deal with work culture as well, though not so much age. I'm not looking for escaping aging though. I kinda want more representation of realistic adulthood (without being boring) that's more positive, or at least stories that let actual realistic grown ass adults can be good characters too...

I love Aggretsuko, it's still so funny to think it was made by the creators of Hello Kitty and has a cute artstyle yet it deals with the boring corporate jobs and the main character loves to sing metal to let her frustration out. On the other hand she does have some nice experiences so she's not just spending the anime being depressed or frustrated.

As someone who's consumed a LOT of anime over the last 40+ years (I'll be 50 next month), there appears to be a severe lack of positive representation of adults and adulthood. It's like the reflection of a culture that sees adult life as a burdensome responsibility (that can't be joyful) and that being broken is an inevitability (unless you have supernatural or political power).

i agree, i mean its all in good fun but you know not all of adulthood is crap. i also agree that they need to stop saying 32 is old. that's like.. finally getting used to adult life age

Well you might have watched these recommendations if you’ve seen a lot but these are the only ones I can think of: 1. Run With The Wind (college life) 2. Love is Hard for an Otaku 3. Barakuman (main characters start in highschool but enter the workforce and grow into adulthoon, most of the supporting cast are also adults) 4. Ya Boy Kongming 5. Usagi Drop (the manga is cursed and really taints the enjoyment of the series but before I knew about it this was a great story about a man becoming a single father) 6. Kotaro lives alone (child MC for this show but it makes you think how sucky childhood could be) 7. Thermae Romae 8. The Great Passage (I found it boring but it fits the bill) 9. My Roomate is a cat (cute comfort show) 10. Way of the Household Husband

That stems from the culture. Most anime come from Japan. Japan is notorious for having a bad work environment. So it makes sense in that way.

@@ruriva4931 Run With The Wind, and Kotaro lives alone are so gooood, not sure either really screams "adulthood" to me tho.

In new stuff. Even in the 90's we had jet with cowboy bebop. Hell, 00's also had their adult characters and even a few aged ones. It wasn't the early 90's and even the 80's where you had a lot more older characters and side characters but still.. the focus on teenage years and adults that long for childhood is a more recent phenomena.

I enjoyed The way of the Househusband a lot! And I've found Zom100 to be very thought provoking. Some scenes really hit hard 'cause I too work a draining, unfulfilling corporate job, which I absolutely hate.

Akiba Maid War is pretty absurd but it's setting of women working in a maid cafe while dealing with the stress of making ends meet mixed with it's hyper violent and excel saga level of absurd humor really got to me. Still thinking about even after it's short 12 ep run in 2022

Art, regardless of the medium, can touch on messages and themes much more accurately than language because some feelings don't have single words that really capture them. Anime is an incredible medium for that. Thanks for making this piece!

Hokuo Kizoku to Moukinzuma no Yukiguni Karigurashi is an amazing manga about a former female soldier who marries a lord of a nearby rural country. Farming and hunting is a big part of the series.

The great pretender has that absurdist kind of vibe. It's bombastic and has snappy animation at times. It also has adults who are just trying to get by doing heist and such.

I really liked this video. I feel like as I ease myself back into anime, it's hard to find context that helps me find shows. This helps a lot! Especially being a young adult.

It's good to just notice the underlying factors driving your interests Then there are two boxes: The things to change and just scratch da inch Also nice to find anime that doesn't demean (I agree on the eye roll on "LITTLE dragon girls)

I like your glasses beautiful. Great take on this. For me my delusions became my reality after enough focus and awareness. So anime is very useful to real hope (our imagination) and inspiration magic (influence) but only for people creative enough to think between the scenes. Im just joking, 🤣😂😂💪🏾🙏🏾✌🏾

He he heh boi!! Black anime content full circle. Welcome to the nhk....and bakuman I have a theorynoticing the similarities in art styles, my theory is that anime art is inspire was Disney but, he was inspired by the art of the Hebrew people in the Ethiopian original jewish Bible. (Yes our holy book also had art like everyone elses) Lots of big eyes, crazy stories and wild hair. Ha ha

Its not just fantasy genre, but it also feels like secret fantasy from our minds. Yearning for adventure, fullfiling it trough anime and imagination- fantasy u cant really achieve in real life. Harem, romance- yearning to be wanted, yearning to be loved Horror\ thriller- could be just yearning for excitement and change of enviroment of sort This video made me realize, all anime things i watched so far were just there for me to try fullfil my fantasys in a way. I believe some people dont just cosplay cus they love the character but they wish to experience things they did too. Fullfill a fantasy to be that person on a day. Isnt it fun? Now real question is, can we do anything else to fullfil those desires beside watching anime? Some anime are inspiring biut its not really gonna make impact on everyone. What can we do is my question? How to fullfil adventurous spirit trapped in a place where nothing changes? How to bring excitement to someone who cant change where they are standing? How to break from monotony of routine and our regular lives?

I'd like to see the reverse of this trope. Like a child that grew up with a magical life that has to adjust to being a normal adult. Not too long ago there was a game released where the premise is that you're a hero that just saved the world from a dragon, but the game takes place in the world AFTER the event happened. I don't remember the name or how the game play was but it was a fresh idea
