Great series of how anime characters speak Japanese. Please do Itsuki Nakano from the quintessential quintuplets or any or all the 7 main characters in TQQ. how they speak Japanese I believe is very important to understanding the plot eg the honorifics, the lost in translation stuff (eg when they say things like tsurui, hatsukoi, uso, etc that are removed from the dub). I compiled a lot of the lost in translation stuff in r/gotoubun

Your corrections for Rika confirmed something I've been thinking for a while: there's an anime trope I see a lot where "cutesy" characters will end every sentence with something like "desu", "de arimasu", or "nano ja".
@Whillyy
@Whillyy 2 жыл бұрын
it depends, the "nano ja" or the "ja" in general is supposed to be used by old/mature men, like in "slime 300" Beelzebub sounds oldish, with おぬし to say "you" and lot of "じゃ" to end her sentence. I think it's because she's and old demon that lived for centuries. On the opposite, the "nano da/desu" is used by loli to add cutesy. If you watch vtuber, there's Himemori Luna who's supposed to be a loli princess and she uses it a lot. There's another new vtuber that's been popular recently, it's Hyakumantenbara Salome which is "an ordinary woman who longs to be a real lady" and used "desu wa" a lot, and here the "wa" is supposed to be ladyish, which match her background So it's not necessarly to be cute, but to add a personality. Another example is in Non non biyori, all the characters comes from countryside village, with the exception of Hotaru, which comes from Tokyo. All the girls speak with there dialect, using "uchi" instead of "watashi". Hotaru uses a lot of keigo, with masu/desu because she's shy, afraid to be rude, comes from a huge city where she's not used to know like all the people living in her town, and wants to become part of the group. (i may be wrong, i'm also learning so if i'm wrong please tell me :) )

What a coincidence, I started reading Higurashi again while I'm also learning japanese. After your previous videos about some anime character's language (Anya's childish speech, Marine's gyaru speech...) I pay more attention to how the characters speak. I wondered if Rika's "なのです" was correct. Another "catchphrase" that is very noticeable is how Rena often ends her sentences with "かな? かな?" By the way you guys should check the Higurashi visual novel. It's really amazing (and way better than the anime, although the anime is good), it's cheap on Steam, and you can practice your japanese since you can switch between english and japanese anytime.

O my god, the Yamamoto example is so funny. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like there's a good pun intended in her words. When she says 分かるません (wakarumsen) and あるません (arumasen) she uses the casual, informal base verbs (with bare ‐る -ru endings, you don't use those when speaking to your sensei) stating that the action is positive (in our cases: (I) know, (I) have) and then she slaps the polite negative endings (-ません -masen) on top of those (the proper way to speak to your sensei). So if we tried to roughly translate the intended pun into English it would be something like: Sensei: Do you know why you were called today? Yamamoto: I know, not. (It, then, explains why sensei says 'That kind of Japanese doesn't exist') ... Sensei: Do you rembember why you were called today? (literally: 'Do you have a memory of doing something why you were called today?') Yamamoto: I have, not.

1:10 I love when Japanese stuff is part of the plot like Yuta won't say this or that about Rika from Higurashi/Umineko or won't explain Shingeki no Kyojin because it's a spoiler. :D 1:08 I love when there's a spoiler thing like the way someone talks is related to plot. :D Man I sure wish I knew Japanese so that I could get these nuances. But eh at least anime peeps make up for it like with Rika (spoilers) . . . . . . . . . . . . They change the tone/sound of Rika's voice I guess? XD

This is what I love about translation, and how much context is lost between translations, im guessing most of these were intentional, given that character like Anya are children who’s grammar is probably not fully formed, it’s a nice touch that doesn’t come across well in localizations.

the only time that desu at the end of everything worked and got the intended result was izuna hatsuse in no game no life. Her situation and linguistic skills made the misunderstanding realistic, and after having it explained to her, in-cannon, she began consciously trying to break the habit. For some reason writers seem to think the desu-in-every-sentence thing is "cute" "childish" or "innocent" when it really just comes off as a "look, look, they speak incorrectly, that's a 'personality', right??"

Thanks for the pro tips, Yuta, but please don’t fall into bad English grammar traps like a lot of native English speakers do by not understanding the difference between “your” and “you’re”. “You’re” is a contraction of “you” and “are, which makes it easy to remember, and “your” is the possessive pronoun for “you”. So in this case your last translation for the expression should’ve been “Your” and not “You’re”. Hope you find this helpful and thanks again for the informative video.
