He knew she would forget his name but would remember how she felt, just like when they came back from body swapping. They never remembered what happened, but they retained the feelings they had. That is why he wrote, "I love you." His name would mean nothing compared to how he felt for her. She was going to write the same thing on his hand. You can tell by the stroke distance of the first character she was in the middle of writing. She was planning on writing "I love you" as well. That's why she smiled and cried once she saw he had written the same thing to her.

From my understanding, they fell in love because they changed themselves while switching bodies. Taki was an aggresive guy, point shown with the bandage he has on his face when they started switching resembling he got into a fight recently, but at the end he became more soft and emotional, point shown when he's explaining the reason he wants to work as an architect, like to build building that leave memories or something like that. While Mitsuha was too push over, quiet, and never stood for herself, point shown when some students are talking about her and since Taki is in her body he throws the desk and everyone is surprised that Mitsuha is not just taking it as usually, and at the end, even though we don't see how Mitsuha changed completely because of Taki's influence, we get a glimpse of it since she convinced her dad to evacuate the town, and that shows she's now more assertive, and determined, more of like a fighter than she never was. So bottom line, at the end of the day, love is changing for someone else you care about, and that's what both of them experience, so yes even though it's so subtle, I think that the writer of this movie did show us the process of them falling in love with each other.
@zynpkrdg

yes! this movie is really good with subtlety and trusting its audience that it makes the experience so much better. because you believe everything and feel everything without even being able to pinpoint why or how exactly (or that happened to me the first time i watched it) and i think it's just so beautiful.

I like your explaination! And they also got to experience each other’s families, friendships, and upbringing which shapes us into who we are as we grow up. We know more about Mitsuha’s family more so than Taki’s - I think director Makoto Shinkai mentioned in an interview that Taki’s parents are divorced, and it looked like he was raised primarily by a busy working father? His mother was never mentioned…maybe that’s why he was aggressive as a teen? He lacked a maternal figure in his life, whereas Mitsuha and her younger sister were both raised by their grandmother after their mother died. And living in a big city like Tokyo is sooooooo different than living in the countryside. I think there are pros and cons to both though, and Mitsuha got to experience big city life whereas Taki got to experience nature and beauty. Maybe those differences also drew them closer to each other and develop feelings for each other.☺️

Taki could not recognize her in the train because she came 3 years before he knew her.... I have a confusion!!! So does anyone have any valid and compatible theory or conclusion that at last after Taki and Mitsuha ask each other's names what happens next as I desperately want to see them together in a relationship and probably as couples so based upon this I have 2 confusion: 1) Do they recover their memories after knowing each other's name and then will it start their love story again? 2) If after knowing each other's name if they don't get memories back but just have feelings then how will their love story progress?

@@TunTunTanu so after losing their memories they still kept searching for that SOMEONE because they may forget each other but their heart remembers the love they shared .... and after being separated they kept searching for each other to fill the void .... the second they saw each other in the train they recognized each other right away .... brain may have forgotten but the heart remembers their loved ones they lost ... Don't know if they got their memories back as long as they remember each other's feelings they can write thousand love stories of their own.

@@dreamlantern8545 Thanks for replying!!! There is another guy who has replied to my query and I am kind of satisfied and convinced about it. He states about whether they would regain the lost memories or not his reply goes as: taki and mitsuha will remember the memories of each other after they say their names in the ending scene because when taki was looking for mitsuha in 2016, he went to the place near itomori 3 years after the comet him and read the names of the people who died in the incident, he finds mitsuha in the book and gradually remembered the memories of her and him being in her body. he went to the shrine because he regained his memories and that allowed him to remember the way to the shrine when he went there in mitsuha's body in 2013 when they were still body swapping. he drank the sake but lost his memories of her once again in order to go back in time and save mitsuha from the comet. theory is: if taki remembers all his memories after he sees or hears about mitsuha, then in the ending scene where they both meet each other again, they will both remember the events that happened and regain their memories after they say each others names if this isn't what happens then this story got some major plot holes and i need to have a word with this director This was his reply and i think it is correct interpretation because as he stated if they don't get their memories back it would prove contrary to the story line of taki getting back memories of the town Itomori and all the Musubi and Shrine related stuff when the lady and the man at the resturant states the name of Itomori again in front of him or we can say remind him of it.

I gasped, giggled and almost screamed when I couldn't watch this video immediately, you have no idea!!! And now.... I'm afraid this comment will have many senseless words so... I'm sorry. You opened the gates. Your Name is definitely my all time favorite anime movie. (A Silent Voice is close next to it but only because this one hurts in a different way), and watching it in theaters at the time was a marvellous experience. The artistry, the music score, the story, everything about this movie was stuck in my head for weeks, and today, I still feel emotional when I come across fan arts or hear just a second of one of its soundtracks, whether it's a cover or an instrumental version. Makoto Shinkai is such an incredible director and his movies are definitely worth the rewatch - and if you do rewatch it, I suggest you do it on your own. Because most anime movies are very focused on the process of "show, don't tell" and requires from the viewers a bit more of focussing than usual. As for the portrayal of the love story here, you don't need to overthink it. The point of the movie was to make one feel and remember what it's like to "fall in love" unexpectedly. Anyone who remembers the very first time they actually fell in love would know it's not something you choose or seek or summon for the sake of it. It just hits you like... a comet, yeah. It's kind of cheesy, but if you're lucky enough, it happens - yk, if life doesn't... slap you and makes you believe that something this good might never happen again lol The reason why Your Name is so loved and praised is because of all its spirituality and its symbolisms, and also because of the shred of realism in its romance that resonates with all generations. It's not a 'love at first sight' trope, or a 'she fell first but he fell harder' situation. It's a story that reminds us of something important about love that we tend to forget as we grow out of our innocence and set ourselves expectations on how love is supposed to "look like" instead of acknowledging what it's supposed to "feel" like. We are so used to the typical depiction of romance in media, conveyed through clichés or flirty looks/moments or romantic tensions or some "haha" moment that makes the characters realize that 'oh they're in love with this person' and etc, and because of these, it does feel like we missed the moment Mitsuha and Taki started to fall for each other... but we didn't. It was happening naturally and gradually through each other's blind trust, as they were trapped in a phenomenom that gave them no other choice but to do so. And when you cut down the list of all the things that makes a healthy relationship work, whether it's between friends or lovers, you end up with only three words : trust, respect, safety. Mitsuha and Taki both came from different backgrounds, and yet they had to take care of each other's life, they had to find ways to adapt and to be careful not to mess everything up, until one thing led to another : they grew on each other through the other one's eyes, through the other one's perspectives and struggles, through their world, and everything and everyone they hold dear. And the "body switch" element here is the epitome of vulnerability, challenging Mitsuha and Taki to trust each other on an intimate level, challenging them to trust that they will keep each other safe and make sure nothing happens to their bodies, whether it's an accident or anything without consent. Just imagine how this has to solidify a bond between two people, and how lucky they were that it happened between the two of them - because nothing garantees that a stranger who has full control of your life for a day is a decent person. Now, to break down the supernatural stuff and the timey-wimey thing, of course we know that the body switch happened while they were asleep, so although it was real for both of them and everyone around them, it all happened like a dream. And in dreams, we are not aware of time (notice how Mitsuha and Taki were oblivious about the day or the year it was when they were switching and they could have easily checked it on their phone, the newspapers or whatever). Thus Taki actually had no idea who Mitsuha was and had no feelings for her when she met him in Tokyo, so their meeting didn't trigger anything. The answer is just that all these dreams happened to her before it happened to him (until the moment their dreams collided and they managed to see each other for a few minutes on the top of the crater ) And the fact that he asked her name before she left the train was just a natural reaction anyone would have in this situation, when someone comes to you and apparently knows your name but you don't know theirs. But the hair ribbon is a beautiful symbolism of the fated lovers, as it is believed in Asian folklore that we all have a red thread attached to our pinky finger that binds us to our soulmate. And just to put it out there, there might be a reason why Taki kept this ribbon all these years : if my memories are correct, I've read somewhere that in Japanese folklore, there is a deity (whose name I can't remember to save my life) who is known to protect messages of love through time. And Taki might have unconsciously felt attached to it because it represented Mitsuha's feelings, even though he didn't know her at the time. That's what makes me believe that in the epilogue, Taki and Mitsuha were not actually trying to remember a dream they have long forgotten. Because when that happens in reality, the urge to remember our dream usually lasts a few minutes after we wake up until it fades away, which is why a dream can't emotionnally haunt you for so many years. It makes more sense to me that the emptiness they feel after they wake up is related to their feelings of love that, whether it's romantic or platonic (referring to the moment Taki had a feeling of recognition when he noticed Tessie and Sayaka in the cafe), are still pristine while their memories were taken away. Not gonna lie, the end discussion was so chaotic I don't even know if anything I wrote shed some light on any confusion you had, but it was hilarious. I'm really glad you enjoyed this movie, it was such a nice surprise ! 🥲♥ And I hope you will eventually show this movie to the Gek Girls, they might genuinely enjoy it ✨ What will be the next anime movie reaction, uh ? 🤗 * *manifesting A Silent Voice* *

Aside from soulmates, one of the moral of the story is: Take chances. It will only happen once, twice the luck and you'll bound to be tied with regrets; you're always searching for something, in this movie, he's looking for someone, like a lost soul. It worked out, the villagers was safe and the girl live. Beautiful. All is well. Then bammm. Kataware-doke. gone. I MEAN, WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. The regret here is since they bound to forget (time shifting reason), one of them should have just written their god damn name instead, Taki wrote "I love you". And I know, it is irritating but a plot twist is needed or we're not having this conversation. it make sense right, that's exactly the movie title. I swear, Makoto Shinkai is phenomenal. You folks better watch his creations coz it is insanely good 🤌🤌 it will make you deep dive on cultural perspective of his film. This is why I love anime in general. The arts, graphics, etc is definitely not for everybody. But once you get to a really good anime to start, the intensity and story telling only matters. They're all animated characters but that's the beauty of it, you'll grasp on the creators imagination and where the inspiration come from. They're more relatable to me.

I see this in a lot of reactions and it’s always a point of confusion for people. The reason Taki wrote “I love you” on Mitsuha’s hand instead of his name is because he knew that if he would’ve written his name, it would disappear just like their text messages. Everything was disappearing because fate was correcting itself. However, in Japanese lore, the moon god protects messages of love, so by writing “I love you”, the power of the moon god supersedes fate itself and allowed Taki and Mitsuha to remember the feelings they had for each other, even if they didn’t remember just who that other person was. This gave them the strength to press forward and complete their task, thereby undoing the timeline and replacing it with a new one, and allowing them to find each other again someday. Truly a beautiful story told in such a unique and interesting way Highly recommend Weathering With You or A Silent Voice as well!

48:32 The reason the initial train scene where Taki doesn't recognize her is confusing is because at that point, he didn't know who she was. Another fun fact: Taki didnt forget Mitsuha immediately after all her notes disappearing in his phone because he still have her braided cord that she gave 3 years ago. As Mitsuha’s grandma says, those threads are like time. They disconnects and reconnects. That’s why when Taki returned the cord to Mitsuha, he lost all his link to her, eventually forgetting her.

@@TunTunTanu this is from someone on reddit which I also think is a valid theory. And oh, Makoto actually confirmed that the 2 git married: taki and mitsuha will remember the memories of each other after they say their names in the ending scene because when taki was looking for mitsuha in 2016, he went to the place near itomori 3 years after the comet him and read the names of the people who died in the incident, he finds mitsuha in the book and gradually remembered the memories of her and him being in her body. he went to the shrine because he regained his memories and that allowed him to remember the way to the shrine when he went there in mitsuha's body in 2013 when they were still body swapping. he drank the sake but lost his memories of her once again in order to go back in time and save mitsuha from the comet. theory is: if taki remembers all his memories after he sees or hears about mitsuha, then in the ending scene where they both meet each other again, they will both remember the events that happened and regain their memories after they say each others names if this isn't what happens then this story got some major plot holes and i need to have a word with this director

@@junkyuseum Nice interpretation! And thanks for the efforts u did to give me a researched reply. And according to what u had said at the last that if they didn't get the memories back after hearing each other's name again then according to the story line it might be a loophole and I strongly agree with u. I just want to let u know about some fan interpretation which I read on yt comments and on reddit that is: When they both at last hear each other's names they will not regain their memories back (as Taki had sacrificed it for reverting the time and course of actions to save Mitsuha) but they will gain a feeling of finding someone that they were missing into their lives, that void would be fulfilled as even if they don't know each other (buz of Musubi) but still they have dear and known love and affection feelings for each other and then they will eventually do more meetups so that they will again revive their existing love feelings for each other, spend time with each other and then again fall in love with each other and end up into relationship. So I want to know what's ur opinion on this theory as I know it violets the concepts of story of regaining memories after knowing the names but still can it be considered valid according to u?
@junkyuseum
@junkyuseum 9 ай бұрын
@@TunTunTanu I dont think Taki had sacrificed his memories to turn back time. The threads in Mitsuha’s hair tie connected both of them. It represents time disconnecting and reconnecting. The only mistake Taki did was to give Mitsuha’s hair tie back to her because he lost his only connection to her. Aside from knowing her name, there are shots in the film focusing on the hair tie while Taki is reminded of Mitsuha’s existence. When they both passed each other by on the bridge, they got the feeling like they knew each other. Same goes when they crossed paths on the train. So I believe, after hearing each other’s name, they slowly remember each other because the hair tie is there to remind them both and reconnect them to one another.

This was a very Japanese interpretation of romance imo. It's always much more subtle. In this case, they lived each other's lives...they got to know one another through friends, family, habits, school, work, and their notes to one another....it was a gradual fall that even they were surprised by. Taki and Mitsuha didn't realize how much they loved each until they realized they would be out of each other's lives in some way. And those feelings never disappeared, despite time. The 3-year thing can be confusing; you have to slow down to think about it. Mitsuha from 3 years ago (let's say 2013) was switching bodies with Taki of 3 years later (let's say 2016). So when she went to visit Taki that day, he didn't know her because that Taki had not switched bodies with her yet (because it's only 2013). Why he took her braided cord, I don't know, but it was a passing moment that he didn't remember until he was made to remember it 3 years later (in 2016).

Taki wrote "i love you" because he knew his name would get erased anyway. Mitsuha was actually not writing her name either, because her name doesn't start with a veritcal line like that. The way Makoto Shinkai depicts love is so beautiful, because even though they forget anything that happened, and even each other's names, they remember they loved each other. It is never spoken of once between them, yet it is conveyed to us better than almost all other relationships i've seen. Even when they actually meet for the first time, you can see their conversation just flows naturally, despite them never having had a conversation before. His filmaking is so good, the way he intertwined the timelines here, the way the pieces fall into place as you realise (you understand everything clearly and it's so satisfying), and the overwhelming emotions everything makes you feel, i'd say this is one of the best movies i've ever watched. I've seen the reaction of a filmmaker who said the scene where they finally meet on that mountain is a scene that they could make directors study for a whole semester, and they would come out of it as better directors. When i'd first watched it i had cried for a while after finishing it because of how emotional it made me.

THE MOST VISUALLY PLEASING ANIME ...anyway lemme explain what i got ..Mitsuha was 3 years bacK in the world and Taki was 3 years ahead...ok so,she was swapping the soul 3 years back and taki was doing it back in time as in past...so,as alot time passed by the swapping 4 may(the date swapping stopped and the date 3 years ago when mitsuha died in 2014) came and on the same day the meteor fall took place but back in time as 3 years ago the same day...that was the day when they showed Taki looking at the meteor fall from his house only when he was with his dad and did not start soul swapping ig ..so, Mitsuha died on 4 may 2014 but the same meteor blast for Taki happened on 4 may 2017 ik its confusing but bcz of time difference Mitsuha knew already about the meteor thing..so, when they went on that mountain with the granny Taki was in HER body so ,he went there again and drank from that mitsuha drink yk ...and its like a miracle of the bloodline of only mitsuha fam so when he drank that he thought of her and wished for a last body swap before she dies...so, he basically got one last swap on the same day morning when she died..and the grandma knew it was someone else in mitsuha's body as she was aware of that thing with dreams and stuff of the bloodline so she accepts and by evacuation everyone were saved...its like the aot thing with time yk the Dr. yeagers past ...the same way Taki fixes everything in the past after all its all fiction guys ,........and they fell in love with the lil thing they did during swapping we don't know cuz we are not the soulmate lmao...so its between them they secretly realized they loveeach other.... ALSO, The "dreams" (body swapping) was some sort of magical spell that got cast upon their bloodline after they did the cuchikamisake ritual for thousands of years, as a way of being able to protect the people of Itomori if another comet hit (because in the story, 1200 years ago the first comet hit Itomori, and that's what created the lake in the middle). The body-swapping to another person in the future acted as a way to warn the incoming danger and evacuate Itomori in case another comet hit. In fact, I think it was a fragment of the exact same comet, because the comet has a cycle of 1200 years and the first comet had hit 1200 years ago. the story is really beautiful after all its about love so...rewatch it with relax mind again and don't try to think deep then you will get it ..its conclusion probably would be love fixes everything and your heart always remember your soulmate even if u mind forgets!!

This has got to be one of the best anime movies there is. The animation, the music production, the plot, and everything else really make you feel something. I don't know why this movie feels so nostalgic to me. This anime movie was produced by Makoto Shinkai. Makoto Shinkai's other movies that are also worth to watch are: - Weathering With You - Suzume - Garden of Words Anime Movies that I recommend to watch are: - Silent Voice (this might be one of my favorites) Studio Ghibli movies - Howl's Moving Castle - Grave of the Fireflies - Ponyo - Spirited Away - Whisper of the Heart

One of the most important things this anime movie did was set the standard for every other anime movie. It was the first true cinematic experience of an anime movie in the Western world. Every other anime movie is now compared to Your Name because of the impact it had. And speaking to the romantic relationship between Taki and Mitsuha, I think it was completely fine. They lived the life of each other, which is a deeper connection than any other couple could have. But they didn't know what they had until they lost it. There are times when you fall for someone without realizing it. He didn't realize it until he went on a date with Okudera. And she didn't realize it until she set it up their date. That ending is great though. I understand why people would want them to remember everything, but I think it's better off like that because they are essentially meeting for the first time, but just know that they are meant for each other.

you never heard of Ghibli

@@dtmt502 Ghibli was the standard before Your Name, but their movies were not ground breaking. Your Name broke through barriers and had non anime fans watching it without knowing anything about it. Ghibli has the reputation already so it's not breaking anything. Also the animation and music was something for the theaters. With Your Name, the sceneries were breathtaking and you needed a theater to capture that. For Ghibli, you can watch it on your TV and have a similar experience.

@@dtmt502 Ghibli movies will always be good. But they weren't MODERN WESTERN CINEMA good. They have their own style and will forever be theirs, while this movie becomes the modern standard for anime cinema.

@@dtmt502Ghibli movies will always have a special place in our hearts, and it did make a crack in the mainstream and introduce those not too familiar with anime to the stories that the medium can tell. However, I really believe Ghibli movies weren't really able to break through to the modern era, despite the quality of their movies. As much as I love them, I also believe that Your Name really did set the standard for what a modern anime movie should attempt to be. It's a different level of quality of animation compared to Ghibli movies, it still has its subtlety and nuance, but mostly it is also adept at presenting a narrative that's a fair bit easier to understand for casual viewers, something that sort of gatekeeped casual viewers from a lot of Ghibli movies. I'm sure I'm not the only one whose friends were kinda turned off from them after watching something like Spirited Away that absolutely doesnt hold your hand at any point throughout the movie in helping you understand. Both Ghibli and Makoto Shinkai movies are awesome. But Shinkai just adapted itself well to modern viewers and there's no denying the influence it's had moving forward after its release.

I remember freaking out the first time Mitsuha's town was shown destroyed. Even a reaction to this movie gave me chills. We need more complex and interwoven story-telling like this. Imo, "When Marnie Was There" is the ghibli counterpart of "Your Name" and has a similar wistful and nostalgic vibe. I think you guys would really enjoy it. It's bittersweet, but it's a comfort movie of mine.
