"I Want to Eat Your Pancreas" is my all-time favorite anime film in this kind of genre. Unfortunately it's kind of tough to find for viewing/reaction. For some reason Japan keeps that one locked up like some sort of national treasure that only Indiana Jones can get his hands on. But if you get a chance, it's well worth checking out.

First of all great reaction, it's very interesting to see how you analyze everything I'll leave you some curious facts that maybe can be overlooked from the movie because it's an adaptation of a manga and they don't explain it in depth: 1. The reason why the girl you don't like is so hateful is because she comes from a home with problems and also when Shoko arrives she sees how the teachers “demand less” from her because she is deaf while they don't have “compassion” for her, this is more noticeable in the scene where the teacher scolds her for her reading (It doesn't justify it anyway, but it gives a background to the character beyond just being hateful) 2. When Shoya removes the hearing aid from Shoyo's ear and makes her bleed it really causes permanent damage, that's why later on she is only wearing one of the hearing aids, and it's interesting because this reflects more than anything that despite how much Shoya changed there is damage that is irreversible 3. Apart from the fact that the blonde girl always victimizes herself and makes it look like she had nothing to do with it even though she was teasing Shoko with the other girls, a guilty that is not mentioned much is the teacher, since he was aware of everything that was going on and let it pass until the principal went to ask for the guilty 4. This I think you noticed but in the final meeting when the girl you dislike calls Shoko a fool she does it with sign language which indicates that at some point she has started to learn it on her own to try to communicate more with Shoko (Probably after Shoko looked for her while Shoya was hospitalized) 5. The reason why you felt that the ending leaves a lot of things open is precisely because the story in the manga does continue but I guess at that point Shoya's development is largely concluded Sorry for the long text, I've seen the movie so many times and many incredible reactions like yours that I think that knowing those details when you see it again you feel it a little different ✨

28:23 So, this line is actually slightly more impactful in Japanese. So, in Japan, you usually only call close friends and family members by their first name. For the entire movie up to this point, Shoya had been calling Shoko “Nishimiya-san.” Him screaming her name trying to stop her from jumping was the first time he called her by her first name. Edit: While she’s still awful, Naoka at least shows the potential for growth, which is more than can be said about some characters *cough* Kawai *cough*. She went out of her way to try to learn how to sign “moron.” She still has a long, LONG road ahead of her, but at least she knows where the road is. Edit 2: 34:25 Traditionally, the Japanese believed that folding 1,000 paper cranes makes your wish come true. It’s come to be associated with hope and healing, so a common gift for sick people in Japan is 1,000 paper cranes.

I don’t know if you’ve alr watched but especially since u said u like feel-good romance type anime I think a lotta fans would back me up on “Horimiya” it’s literally the staple for that genre in recent times, 2021, so definitely aesthetically pleasing too. It’s got that unserious almost “filler” type vibe, esp since it’s abt highschoolers, and it’s only 13 eps.

In Korea and Japan, we used to fold 1000 origami cranes (or sometimes stars), when dearly wishing for something, like to ace a big test or for a crush. It was a thing in the 80s, 90s but not sure if kids these days do it too.

There are at least three different English dubs of this movie and they all have very different words, and none of them match the English subtitles for the Japanese sound. In my opinion this particular dub is not the best because Shoko's dubbed voice is too clear. In particular, the love confession scene is inconsistent. She was very clear is everything she said except the "I love you" part, which all of a sudden was unintelligible. As another commenter has said, that scene makes much more sense in Japanese because the word for love and the word for the moon are very similar in Japanese. The best dubbed version of that scene has Shoko saying "I lub moo" which sort of gets at the point. We can hear "I love you" in that, but we can also see how "moo" might be misinterpreted as "moon". In the nighttime meeting on the bridge after Shoyo wakes up, in one dub I have heard "I want you to help me live" and in another dub I have heard "I want to help you to live". These are very different and I don't know why.
@TheStormblooper-100Күн бұрын
This is why I _always_ watch foreign movies in their original language with English subtitles. The only exception I'll make is with those older Italian movies which were always filmed without sound and with all of the actors from different speaking countries saying their lines in their own languages. All of the actual dubbing was then added in post production. I aways figured since some of the actors were clearly speaking English anyway which you could tell by reading their lips then I may as well just watch those movies with the full English dub. Older Dario Argento movies would be a good example of this. 😉

Ojo, tu colita de caballo es igualita a la de Shouko. Se ven muy tiernas. Yo this movie was a rollercoaster and umm, why is everyone jumping off high places in Japan? They okay over there? I’d say this is a good movie to show to kids to teach them empathy but those parts…uy. I can relate to kid Shoya because I was also a demon child. Looking back at that time in my life makes me cringe. His redemption arc fills me with joy because very few people reflect on their wrong doings and try and amend them. He succeeded in befriending new people like Tomohiro (everyone needs a friend like him) and people who he hurt, so by the end of the film he found that worth he was missing at the start. I know yearners are hating the ending but sometimes learning to love yourself is an accomplishment in its own right that is worth celebrating. I don't quite understand Japanese culture perfectly but I kind of get what the film was trying to convey with Shoya, I'll definitely watch the complete film sometime. So in the Heretic movie it’s the friend that dies, got you, I didn’t even want to watch the movie anyways. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is a must watch, trust me you’ll love that anime. P.S. I hope your sign language lessons are going well.

Early on when you are asking why the kids are being so mean to her, the answer is that kids around that age and younger are just assholes! That's all there is to it. they view things/ people that are different from them or what is considered normal as bad or inconvenient(even if it literally does nothing to effect them whatsoever) They lack empathy for the most part and literally just do whatever they think of. Obviously there are exceptions, but that's the overall reasoning
