the discrimination line makes perfect sense. hes saying that ragnar discriminated against other people (for example, the 62 innocent civilians) in favor of canute, or that a parent discriminates against other people in favor of their child. they are giving these people special treatment while not treating others the same way. obviously in the case of a parent and child thats totally justified, but in willibald's eyes, everyone should be treated with love and nobody should be given preferential treatment - or at the very least, he rejects the idea that its love. he doesnt explicitly state that hes opposed to the kind of love/discrimination that ragnar showed canute, just that he doesnt believe it to be love. the love that he speaks of is a christian concept called "agape". thats why the dead viking represents love best in his eyes, as he no longer has the capacity to discriminate between people he wants to give special treatment to and people he doesnt. and all the examples that canute mentions - the snow, the sky, the sun, the wind, the fog, the mountains - they all "treat" people completely equally.

I think that the discrimination part means something like having a preference towards others You prefer your child over everyone else You dont love everyone the same So in a Christianism vision you should love everyone the same, otherwise thats not true love

Yes, God's love is universal. Once Canute understands this he questions why would God continue to test humans when humans are not created to embody this kind of universal love. He is asking of us what we could never achieve, and then punishing us for failing. And so rather than seek the Father's salvation, Canute decides to build his own paradise right here on earth instead. This obviously all has a double meaning with relation to his literal father the king.

There is a reason a mother loves her child, there is a reason a man loves his wife and that reason is the condition for love, even though it's a past condition i.e. a condition that has been fulfilled. For instance a mother loves her child because of the sacrifice she has made for that child and because the child 'belongs' to her. There's no way she can love another woman's child so. Note I'm assuming the mother is a standard well-adjusted, good-natured woman. So basically what the priest is saying is that, that form of love which to us is pure, is merely discrimination when compared to the purest ideal of love which the bible asks us to embody and that's why Canute says it's unattainable. Another reason he says that is because that 'love' doesn't extend universally.

I love this episode, oh sorry, I discriminate this episode since my love is not the real love. There are moments one can understand only in those moments. Truly the fog has lifted from Knud's eyes as he have said; while watching an uncertain and dangerous battle unfold before his eyes, he became attentive to the trees, rocks, soil, and the sound of chirping birds, indicating that all the filters in his mind were lifted. Instead of looking at a small square of photograph, he began to see the scene he is part of. He is enlighened. In that moment, all the unknowns vanish, and everything gains meaning in the person's eyes. However, there is a vast difference between knowing what to do and actually doing it. The prince believed he had everything he needed to take action, and he stood up. But what happens if there's no enthusiasm to take action? "You have become wise. Yet, true wisdom is knowing that you have learned too late at that moment." - Umberto Eco, ll pendolo di Foucault (1988)

*I found the priest's speech fascinating* 💯👌. From what I understand, he explains that death is love, because death does not discriminate: it loves everyone equally. He says it: the dead accept everything, without ever complaining: death treats everyone the same way. In Buddhism we would speak of equanimity. He speaks literally about it but it is also a metaphor (the death of the ego), it obviously also speaks about selfish love, the one who wants to possess, who loves one and not another: who discriminates. He talks about it when he explains that it is like worshipping a king while whipping a slave, or when he says that Ragnar placed the Prince above everything, even his life: *selfish love hierarchizes, has limits.* That's why the Priest told the two brothers that their filial love was not the love he was looking for, when they told him they couldn't have this relationship with anyone. *The priest made a point when he claims that true love is unconditional love.* The snow, the sun, the dead body, etc. does not discriminate. The sun shines on everyone. *People, on the other hand, discriminate about who they love, they only care about those who are close or dear to them.* Ragnar loved Canute over the lives of 50 innocent villagers. We love our family and friends 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 over the homeless person 👤 we walk by on the street. Canute development is real. It was so epic when he scared Bjorn with pure resolve and anger at God. The juxtaposition between Canute and Thorfinn is not accidental. What is a true warrior and what is love is the same question. Canute found the answer while Thorfinn did not. Thorfin is still in the cradle. *This show truly is something special, masterpiece.*

Basically, the sermon on the mount. Matthew 5:45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

"What a reel to show as they talk about the sins of humanity" Yes, it really embodies the moment in the action. I think its a microcosm for the entire show. The historical setting, the dominant culture and social norms are based on violence. Christianity is such a radical comparison to the viking lifestyle. It makes you appeeciate how such a different way of life, offered by christianity, could have appealed to people in those days.

the idea of love here is that love cannot discriminate so if ur love correspond to giving value to one thing over anoher it is not love. as love is pure and equal. as human we cannot feel such thing as we love our dears more than the one we dont know. so the definition of love as we human describe it isnt good as its the same definition as discrimination but with tender words
