There needs to be some degree of gatekeeping to protect the IP. I recently heard one of the infamous English dubbers proudly state that she "improved" on her role in 2.5-jigen no Ririsa on social media. I don't watch dubs and a big part of it is to appreciate the work of the Japanese seiyuu - some of whom I am a fan. It’s not to be elitist or gatekeep. I don't even like watching the anime with English subtitles cuz any mistranslation would just irritate me.

With the silent majority debate it’s important to keep in mind that a vast majority of normie viewers are perpetual consumers with little stake or interest in what’s broadcast/streamed at large. They’ll pay their $5/month for the big name shows and leave it at that. The activist types trying to shut out what they find distasteful are few and far between and have little to no say in the community outside of screeching on Twitter. They do, however, have numerous plants in the localization world, which is far more problematic. That’s a different discussion altogether.

When it comes to newbies into anime, you need to focus on what shows they enjoy on normal TV or Movies first, see the genre of stuff they are into and find Anime equivalents of those series. Don't show anything "weird" to a newbie unless you are sure you know what they are into, such as those who loved American Pie films are perhaps perfect got getting into the Harem Comedy series. Those who enjoy Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland would be perfect for Isekai series. That sort of thing.

From experience a lot of this comes down to the fact that you can understand English, so you can actually judge it correctly. When you don’t understand what’s being said you can’t properly judge it.

Tenchi series was 90s Harem comedy. Perhaps best as the OVAs with a few spinoffs like the Magical Girl Sasami series. But the Harem Comedy genre really took off thanks to Love Hina in the late 90s manga and early 2000s anime adaptation. I know because Kaolla Suu came in with a SEGA Dreamcast on her head in one frame of the early manga chapter.

8:12 Man... That point... bro.... I was watching Jobless Reincarnation while it was airing... week to week... and they started releasing the English dub.... I'd say... 4 episodes behind the Japanese dub, so out of curiosity i would watch each episode dubbed when they released. I was waiting impatiently... for my favorite "not tsundere" to make her boisterous entrance.... and let me tell you... when I heard what they did to Eris... The butchering... the 7 year old, fully grown, chain smoking, grandma... I fell out of my chair and just sat on the floor in stunned silence. I am sorry... but I am not sorry! Its not the voice actors fault... I'm sure she plays an EXELLENT chain smoking grandma character. But who ever cast her as a 7 year old girl needs to lose their job. (ok I'm not one for easily firing people... they need to be demoted.... or their role changed to where they cant appoint actors to character roles. CUZ THEY SUUUUUUCK)

Anime series that deserves to be a Movie adaptation. I can say Devilman but it needs to be split into 3 parts. Devilman Birth and Demon Bird being the 1st. Some slice of life comedy and Demon Hunting from Devilman in the 2nd. The big reveal and the humanity destroying each other in the 3rd. Because to get the spoiler moment that bigger effect, you need to really develop on a important character during the first 2 movies so she can get full development as a love interest before massive spoiler happens to her in the 3rd.

shows I know where the dub is better than the sub: -Yu Yu Hakusho -Ghost in the Shell -Cowboy Bebop Every other time it seems like the voice actors are trying, but they can't convey the emotions and expressions the characters are trying to get across properly. @@plasmafonk Even I wouldn't go that far. That's 3-5 shows (FYI I forgot Black Lagoon) and maybe a handful more that did a decent job, but it's debatable which was better. There's alot more anime, even back then than 10 or so shows. Plenty of English VA's didn't care or understand the anime they were working on back then. Then you had 4kids messing up and tweeking the source material for "Western Audiences" before it was even handed to them. ...yeah, I wouldn't claim they cared more back then. I've heard good things about some modern voicework and had to rewatch Delicious in Dungeon in english with a friend. It wasn't better, but it wasn't bad or lazy voicework.

@@yevaud6 The quality is about the same. It's just that the reason for lack thereof has evolved over time. Back in the day, the nicheness of the Western anime industry made for tight budgets and squeezed resources which was reflected in the less developed talent pool. Today, Sony (who owns both Funimation and Crunchyroll and has a monopoly on English language licensing) is awash in cash and has access to a wide talent pool, but a combination of corporate greed and cultural environment prevents them from putting out high quality localizations. You can see this when experienced VAs successfully showcase their emotional range but at the same time constantly spout short-lived zoomer neologisms because of the terribly (and arguably malevolently) translated script they were given. It really is a shame.

I only watch Dub because in my mind if I’m gonna read I’d rather read the manga instead of not watching the visuals while understand what’s going on. But I think if they were to reanimate the mouths to move in a way that makes sense for English than it would be a lot better. That would also fix the dialogue issue because they could make scripts that don’t sound clunky, because they have to make scripts that match with the mouth movements not what sounds good. But English Dub anime doesn’t make that much profit so it will never happen. Also to the point “did they research the role”. A lot of the time they can’t unless they read the manga, which they can’t get the vocal cues they were talking about. But they don’t get to see the anime until they are in the studio. It’s not like they get sent the entire anime to watch before they take the role. They hear the voice in the booth but they don’t get time to tune and pitch their voice correctly, due to budgeting. They get paid either per word or per hour, either way they don’t have the budget to sit there for hours and do it all perfectly.

Dub vs Sub: for me, it depends on the show, the voice actors, and the acting. For instance, because it goes between characters so quickly, and I enjoy the English voices used, I prefer English Dub vs Sub for The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. On the other hand... and I'll probably get strung up for this... I prefer Sub Kaguya-sama Love is War vs Dub. Sub hits differently and the actors for Kaguya and Shirogane (and Chika) are sublime!

The reason why people watch anime on pirate website it's because Crunchyroll isn't available in their country no accessible due to law and restrictions on other hand Netflix is available but anime they got is limited some are not available they'll have to go for piracy website. If they wanted to watch anime on Japan they need to pay lot of money for passport travel. Speaking about money people are trying to budget and save up money due to bank around the world getting down such a china bank other countries as well. To be frank without this website anime will not get popular outside of Japan. Without piracy anime will be available only in Japan to watch. When you shutdown 1 website 5 more will rise cycle repeat itself like a virus spreading. They can't stop piracy because It's already there in the beginning anime was established for public to watch.

As a non-american, I notice that all american dubs have (in addition to the strange overacting and limited emotional spectrum) a very strong southern accent. (wtf. Google AI just autocompleted „southern accent“, am I on to something?) In contrast, „Hollywood“ productions have a neutral English, unless the role calls for an accent or even dialect. Do you native speakers notice that, too? Or does your mind filter that out? And why is that? Is there a dub industrial complex somewhere in southern Texas? A magical girl speaking like she would ride on horseback into the sunset (oooh the cliches) is an instant turn-off for me. The German dubs are weird in their own way, they basically reimagine the dialogue in kind of a german tv soap opera. Also not my taste. To each their own, but I prefer the original soundtrack if possible (also prefer hollywood in English over German dub)
