I believe we see the One Piece all the time. The One Piece is the ocean. If I had to guess, based on the themes of One Piece, Roger's greatest treasure was his dream of a world where people could travel freely across it all, where people weren't split apart. The ocean symbolizes freedom in the series and The King of the Pirates is the most free person. Thus, the One Piece is both physical and metaphysical, it's something we've seen the entire series. ...Also inheriting Roger's dream of a connected world, bringing the world back together in one piece, would justify going after the World Government and destroying Mariejoise and Reverse Mountain. X marks the spot.

In my opinion main theme of One Piece is importance freedom. Freedom in pursuit of what you want, even if others might not like it. All Straw hat characters have certain traits not everyone might accept -Luffy - childishness, he always seek to have fun - Nami - materialism - she enjoys money and spend it - Zoro - love for combat - Sanji - womanizer - Ussop - love for lying (I can't find flaws in Chopper as he is innocent) They are normal human flaws, that can be accepted but they are not 100% pure. Oda strongly wanted to emphasies necessity of being yourself, pursuit thing others might hate you for. Only when you feel yourself you can be yourself. They all have strong confidence and won't get controlled by anyone. They can think for themself. Now let's see how common people in One Piece are. Each time Straw hats come to new island people are compassionate, but very meek. They can't think for themselves and let others think for them. They always become victims of pirates or corrupted goverment. They don't have confidence to fight back and let others stomp on them. As a result they are true culprits of tyranny of this world. They are meek, they blindly let themself be controlled as a result give sense of power to those that control them. They are responsible for all corruption of Celestial dragons and Marines, because they let themselves be stomped on. Straw Hat flaws make give them confidence. Luffy is Luffy, he is himself, he will be himself. They feel free and won't get controlled and have confidence strong enough to question authority.

You got completely right, i always see people saying one piece is about absolute freedom but one piece has shown the dark side of that, when trying to answer problems in morality it comes down to good and bad that’s why Doflomingo speak was so iconic but one piece doesn’t “have too” be so complicated we’re just our selfs with opinions and choose who we want to be, personal choice is freedom

i also grew up with one piece and i feel like i absorbed some of its essence in a way. I don't know what the one piece will be, but i feel like it will make me cry and laugh too! i have this feeling that it will show some deep corner of oda philosophy of life and i am so excited!! it definitely is his life work, and i love how his passion for one piece inspire and ignite passion in everyone else! for me, passion is one of the keys to life

Luffy does not actually care about gold. For him gold is only good to buy food and make it useful to help others. So Luffy is not chasing gold... One piece has to be something else.
