I can't _believe_ you didn't include Edward's amazing closing monologue, where he summarizes not just what he learned but what he learned _about learning..._ that growing beyond oneself in spite the obstacles leaves one with "a heart made *_fullmetal._* " (/"a fullmetal heart.") Just about the most perfect final line to any story I've ever experienced, with the thematic twist on the title and main character's epithet.

Izumi Curtis was my favorite character in this entire show. Admittedly, this is personal. However, I really appreciated how there was subtly and depth to her character. Part of the reason that Ed and Al bonded to her was because they saw her as a strong willed mother figure that provided discipline and strength. However, this worked both ways. Ed and Al gave Izumi comfort and faith, allowing her to take on the role of a mother figure that she couldn't experience before. She also provides the philosophy of "all is one and one is all" which ends up serving as the foundation for not only the brothers but also the audience. We end up realizing how this entire universe is tied together and how you can't find shortcuts to escape it. When we see her at first you might think "okay, she's an edgy loner" but no, that's not the case. That is completely intentional for the story. While General Armstrong is very militaristic and goal oriented, not willing to expose her real personality to others, Izumi has a gentle heart shielded by a rough exterior and she thinks about the big picture before anything else. She ends up embracing her identity as an alchemist because she sees how the Elric brothers learn to keep moving forward instead of hiding from the past. While she may seem to be a violent person she cares deeply about others and has an appreciation for life which is the foundation for the Elric Brother's journey. This arguably one of the most compelling characters in the entire series!

Great analogy and I absolutely agree. I love the way the Elric brothers fill in the missing child(ren) aspect in Izumi's life, while she fills the caring mother one in theirs. Izumi and Edward's explosive yet wise personalities match very tightly too, which I love a lot.

I actually love how FMAB’s creator (forgot her name) seemed to intentionally focus on the more philosophical ideas behind Alchemy. In the (old) basic scientific Alchemy practices, the goal and purpose of it was to be able to turn any metal to gold; in its more philosophical practices and understandings, this concept was essentially the same except with humans. To become the perfect being through transmutation. But not physical transmutation, instead transmutation of the soul, in a sense. In the anime, the idea/act of human transmutation was brought up A LOT, i mean it was one of the driving plot forces i guess. But even though they (Father mainly) were trying to become the perfect being aka god, they were going about in a much too physical, scientific way, ultimately failing. However by the end of the anime, you could possibly say there was a human transmutation, or maybe one in progress; Edward and all those around him. Through their experiences, learning, and growth, they’re working to be better - though maybe not perfect - human beings. This is essentially one way of defining the philosophical idea of human transmutation; that it is nothing more than the concept of the journey of learning, experiencing, and growing from mistakes and experiences. This is also why Father failed, because he didn’t/couldn’t learn anything from the whole ordeal. He was still asking why, not attempting to learn and figure it out for himself from what happened. This all just my take however

In FMAB they rushed through a lot of the initial story, I think exactly because it had already been told in the first anime. They wanted to get to the parts of the manga that the first series hadn't told.

@xInfoRaderx Actually, I believe the slow release times of the manga at the time of FMA forced production to lengthen the story greatly in hopes they wouldn't outpace the manga. In a positive manner this allowed us to connect more with certain characters (especially Nina and Hughes) which made their endings so much more impactful. But the negative point was that we often got a bit more filler content. In the end though the manga releases were simply too slow (thank goodness, the author took the time to create a masterpiece rather than just release weekly for the check) so FMA did its own ending. TBH I'm thankful for it. I got such a satisfying beginning to the series in the FMA anime, but later got to rejoice when Brotherhood released and witness the full story in all its glory. I still watch Brotherhood in full once a year.

Personally I had a idea about Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood that I thought made a lot of sense you see Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood almost exactly follows the philosophy of Plato and his idea on gods. In Fullmetal Alchemist after the brothers try to bring back their mother they are greeted by the being known as truth which is essentially God. after meeting this being he punishes the boys by taking away Edwards leg and alphonse's body which there is symbolism there but I won't go into it. now this brings me to the philosophy of Plato, you see Plato believed that the only reason Gods existed was to give humans a goal to eventually surpass them or not need them. I'm paraphrasing but basically it follows as such anytime humans try to borrow the power of God or even try to become gods they were fiercely punished, because Gods wanted humans to not need them and use their own power. in the case of Fullmetal Alchemist Alchemists are essentially using God's power, truth in this case, so whenever they try to use alchemy to bring back the dead or do something that is in God's domain God punishes them to show them not to use his power instead do something greater. at the end of the series (Spoilers ahead obviously) when Edward decides to give up his Alchemy this is incredibly important because this is Edward rejecting the power of God and deciding to use his own power from now on which is the philosophy of Plato come true, and in the end Trurh congratulates Edward for finally realizing it. Edward doesn't need alchemy he doesn't need the power of Truth/God he will use his own power, his own two hands ,and his mind. Actually I really appreciate it how well done it is but this is just my idea and I probably didn't explain it very well but I love it. Also as a side note I do agree with your philosophy as well I was just trying to make the point that are also closely follows Plato's idea or at least Brotherhood does

And for me, at least, it's hard to not get lost trying to follow the lines. I like what you're saying, and I think it has merit. Just the formatting could be better, that's all. :D

Abit late, but also adding this: Not only that, the principle of equivalent exchange still hold true within the entire series, even at the very end: Only priceless thing can be exchange with priceless thing, possibility with possibility, and truth with truth. That's why they never get their mother back, as they never exchange the priceless thing that is their's soul, that's why Edward gained Alphonto back, as he trade the possibility of being an alchemist for the possibility of gaining a family back again, and in that, he trade his truth of an alchemist, of his old self, in exchange with his truth as a human being, as his new self. Equivalent exchange is never proven false, what's at fault is how we weight it value.

Alright, so what's Father's driving motivation? Why does he do what he does? What's the reasoning? Nothing. So Here's our Cliché Villain. Do the Homunculus have any motivation? The only one who does have any motivation is Greed, but that's about it! Scar. Why did he make it his mission to kill all State Alchemists if he himself shed innocent blood in the same era. Answer "Hypocrisy". It's a completely Black and White series I don't consider it to be bad it's although pretty good. But it doesn't qualify as the greatest story ever told. I think the Original 2003 Adaptation had more meaning and weight to it.

He denied his human parts thinking that is what made him weak but just like his off springs he wanted to have a family. That is why he named them made them call him father and even made pride look like his original form. You must understand that while Father is from the other side of the gate, his motivation is still deeply human. He was born within the flask and was trapped in it up until he freed himself. But that is not enough, once he escapes the physical flask the world becomes his new flask. Even though he is no longer bound physically, he is still bound by the law of equivalent exchange. Father believes, by swallowing God, he can escape the flask which cages him psychologically. After all, if you can do it once then it is possible to replicate the same process infinite amount of times Father's journey from his birth to demise is less about pursuing something, and more about running away from something. Cyborg Icarus29 You're right! Cell from DBZ was also inside glass tube and he also wanted perfection. The thing is when Father and Cell swallowed their victims it made them tremendously strong but not perfect as they claimed that they were. Wait so doesn't DBZ already have this storyline. Being Power Hungry is not relatable, being free is. So the minute he becomes free, he no longer has any motivation. I get what you're saying though but his reasoning is not relatable enough in Brotherhood. It might be in the Manga but I haven't read it. And about Scar, he is a total hypocrite up until he admits that he was wrong so what was the purpose of his earlier character arc where he was being build up as this anti-hero that soon turned out to be Winry's Parents' killer. The whole storyline was so dumb. Why would an injured guy kill someone who saved his life for no reason and then blame all the State Alchemists for the tragedy, then suddenly become an ally. You know how stupid that sounds. Homunculus are brain-washed monsters created by the 7 seven deadly sins of Father. Having a dominant personality trait like Wrath or Pride doesn't count as being a motivation. Wrath is technically a human so he should have some reason to why he obeys Father. By Black and White I mean, there is a definite Good side "Hohenhiem, Edward and Mustang's side" and a defined Evil "Father's and Bradley's soldiers". In the Original Series series you had People manipulating people and a degree selfishness and selflessness. A clash of Ideology's and Beliefs and reality being unsatisfying and disturbing. Also Ed's Atheism makes no sense in Brotherhood since he met God.

I definitely liked Greed the most, which can be odd to a bunch of people. I always thought that he had all his emotion and understanding compared to the others because the Father didn’t really completely cut him out- Father was still greedy enough to want god within himself. Thus Greed was the least Homonculi of them all. And Greed’s want for friends throughout his existence and eventually getting so many to remember and support him, it makes his death much more powerful. I've been through watching this series 3 times in my life. Watching the original animation back when I was a budding teenager, around 12 - 13, and I had then thought it was one of the deepest, darkest and most compelling (in all ways) series that I've ever seen. Then I watched Brotherhood a few years after, actually having no idea what it is - just the excitement alone that there was something new FMA related. This then topped the original completely, and there has been little else that I've watched afterwards that have even come close to it afterwards. It was complete in a way that the first wasn't. It hit all the marks, and then those that I didn't even know could be hit for me. Then, just near the end of last year, I rewatched FMAB. And again, it reaffirmed for me how this is probably the best series I've ever watched, period. This series is a fucking trip, and if you let it, it will broaden your mind and expose you to things that will change life for you (as any good series / form of entertainment should). I've no doubt that I'll probably be watching this series again before I pass from this world.

To be clear, the problem here isn't science, it is people taking science to an extreme without concern of the cost. The largest difference between science and religion (in terms of explaining the world) is science actually updates its explanations to better fit new findings and is testable and repeatable. Religion is faith based... and usually takes some major disaster to cause a change in their explanations. Alphonse and Edward are actually best described as true scientists instead of dogmatic followers. That they don't blindly accept alchemy as the only answer is akin to copernicus saying the sun is the center as opposed to the earth.

Humans are always the problem, be it in science or religion. Humans interpret. If done poorly, results will be poor aswell. Religious scriptures can be confusing to navigate for instance with many seemingly contrary information. If you take from it that striving towards altruism is the purpose of life. Then most would probably agree a such viewpoint would be preferable. If you take from it that people must follow your religion and that this must be achieved in any way possible. You get holy wars and most people probably dont like wars. Likewise practioners of science often do so with a purpose. If you see science as an ultimate tool towards knowledge and that knowledge should be achieved through any price. You are... Mengele(not neccesarily, but still on a dangerous path). If you see science as a means to progress the wellbeing of humans, you might be more inclined towards having boundaries and realize not all prices are prices to be paid. Hence philosophy and wisdom. Science and religion in itself is a form of philosophy though, or atleast born through philosophy. Which is basically thought and reason. People trying to find answers to various questions, coming up with methods to do so, such as science. Or teachings about purpose and moralism. Which is more akin to religion, but there also exists philosophies which does not fall under religion.

First off, this video was beautiful. FMAB has always been my favorite anime (and arguably my favorite show) and this video really hit the nail on many of the reasons why (and brought up some I hadn't thought of before either). Also, it reminded me of a couple quotes; the first is from Haim Ginott in a letter to a teacher: "Dear Teacher, I am a survivor of a concentration camp. My eyes saw what no man should witness: Gas chambers built by learned engineers. Children poisoned by educated physicians. Infants killed by trained nurses. I never heard the ever-important sentence that is essential to explaining this series: "Science is an epistemic philosophy, not a moral one". Science is the only current system that uses data to create predictive models of the universe, AKA it is empiricist pragmatism. This means that science is only concerned with things that have measurable effects and that can thus be tested repeatedly. Many would question why science would leave out all other forms of knowledge, but the problem with that approach is that if a thing literally has no repeatable, measurable impact, why would we bother with it? What is the difference between it being real or not being real? In this light, to critique science itself is to propose that things that have no measurable properties exist and are in any way important or real. Science is the only truly relevant way to look at reality, but you shouldn't base your morality on it, since science isn't prescriptive, it's descriptive. I think this is the core message of the series. In this sense, the tree never made a sound if no one was there to hear it. We can cut down a million other trees to see if they make a sound and then make a model that suggests the tree made a sound... Or maybe our model says it didn't. Remains to be seen.

And I don't think rationalism should be left to morality, as it doesn't deal with moral questions. I think that if your system cannot be applied to getting over a road consistently without being hit by a truck, it is a worthless epistemic system, however. Not a lot of people out there using rationalism instead of looking both ways, which is science and could be called "a verificationist experiment using sensory information". Rationalists don't live up to their own system.

For me, FMAB was one of my favorite animes due to the relationship between Alfons and Edward, I always thought that was Edward did to retrieve his brother's body is the same of what I would do for my brother, I would give everything for him, that there are thing that can not be put in the balance of the science thought, that sometimes you do things that seems unreasonable for what your beliefs are. Now with this video I only reassure my feelings for this anime, as I think that science is great, but I hate when people think less of someone who also believe in religion as if it was something wrong to believe in something else and that it is like if you do, you automatically do not believe in science.

The original FMA is widely considered the poorer adaptation of a manga that many people like more. FMA:B follows that manga much closer making many, including myself, see it as superior. It's hard to even call them the same series after a certain episode for this reason.

I love the philosophy of FMAB & agree that we shouldn't blindly follow any methodology. Science has proven itself perhaps the most useful method of understanding reality, but that doesn't mean other methods should be rejected. If we as a species were more open minded, accepted the fact that we know barely enough about our own existence & reality itself to be so confident in our understanding of things, & were more willing to adapt our beliefs, we as a species would be so much more superior than what we are now.

The concept of "Science can be applied to research and create stuff that I find morally wrong, so we shouldn't follow strictly science" is just laughably ignorant. Science is not a fucking religion, or philosophy, or mythology, or any of the shit people seem to be comparing it to in this comment section. Science by definition is the breaking down and understanding of the universes fundamentals. A 'science', when speaking of a perfect science, is a complete understanding of how a system works. For example, you could consider the following a science. If you cause the growth of movement of a particle, you are increasing what is deemed as 'heat' in that particle. That is something that simply works. We as a species have done it, and can measure and see it happen. I simply do not see why people in this comment section equate an understanding of that caliber to the laughable concept of a religion. A religion is blind no matter what you are told or taught. Believing in something you cannot know to be true is like flipping a coin, not looking at it, and being positive that it landed on heads. For no logical reason. If you were to instead actually look at that coin and know it landed on tails, that would be the equivalent of science in that metaphor.

If you don't want to believe something, even if you experienced it yourself, you'll usually find a way to explain it. Say, a convinced atheist sees an angel one day. You might assume that would change his mind into being a theist, but he'll probably assume he was hallucinating. The thing about science is that it doesn't make assumptions based on the unknown (see Occam's Razor), and hence has to exclude all unknowns from it's world view. And obviously, the existence of any supernatural entity is a giant unprovable and uncalcuatable assumption. Which is why science never makes that assumption. It wouldn't even do so in the face of a literal voice from heaven or anything of the sort. So someone who adapts science as a world view can't accept the supernatural as a part of it, even if confronted with it. That's where the "magic is science we just haven't understood yet" - mindset comes from. The assumption that the laws of nature are absolute, and that there is nothing that is above them. Now, science doesn't actually say that. Iit just doesn't ask that question, since it can only observe the natural world. But scientism does, assuming that anything science can't explain just can't be real.

As soon as you recognise the existence of some higher being, even with limits to it's power, that has an effect on your view of the world and you have to factor it in to your decisions. If you don't do that, then your actions are the same as if you thought this god didn't exist, making you, in effect, an atheist. And it is in this sense that you could describe Ed as an atheist at the beginning of the story. And in a sense, Father (who doesn't want to see god as a superiour being, but wants to absorb him) is an atheist as well.

Neon Genesis Evangelion doesn't have fundamental philosophy in the sense that FMAB does. It is more of an exploration of psychological consequences of running away from your problems and the inability to change oneself. Let me explain. In the anime, Shinji and Asuka are both very much rejected children from their individual families, both developing insecurities and coping differently. Whereas Shinji becomes introverted, detaching himself from social situations, Asuka lashes out. Asuka compensates for her insecurities by behaving narcissistically and relying on her piloting the eva skills as her importance and identity. This is further exemplified during their awkward kiss. Asuka held that kiss very long, desiring Shinji to do something-anything. She wanted reassurance in herself and for someone to value her. Shinji was passive because he was afraid of rejection and getting hurt. When he doesn't do this, Asuka retreats back to her abusive personality (trying hard to not show any signs that she is emotionally hurt). We see the tragedy of miscommunication. Both have similar problems yet neither are able to help eachother due to the fact that their unhealthy methods of coping ultimately stops them (Shinji detaching out of fear and Asuka creating an abusive facade). Watch Asuka's mental breakdown clip on youtube and you will see her dwell on that kiss asking "Why are you hear god damn it. You won't love me. You won't hold me. You don't do anything." When someone watches the kiss clip for the first time they lack the proper context of what Asuka was thinking. It is only through this clip that her introspection becomes clear. She is clearly hurt (you see her in the bathroom about the cry but later makes believe that she just needs to brush her teeth to maintain false appearances). Now it is intentional that the story becomes less about the Angels and more about the Instrumentality project. See, instrumentality would be a means to blur the lines of individuality, therefore removing all pain from oneself. Shinji's father makes the conclusion that pain is a consequence of autonomy. However this is simply running away from your problems. Shinji rejects instrumentality in end of evangelion (his thought process being shown in the anime ending ep 24 and 25 as him discovering value in his identity). The movie ends in a bitter way with Asuka saying "How disgusting." But what is more important is the damn cover of the movie. The cover of end of evangelion is a scene directly after the movie ends. You see Asuka and Shinji both looking, rather peacefully, in the distance. The quote is present "The fate of destruction is the joy of rebirth." This is important because it describes a kind of hope in that these two characters were finally able to come to terms with themselves and no longer run from their anxiety and problems. So I don't Evangelion is without philosophy. Quite the contrary. Yes it is infamous in its attempt to mindfuck and just blurt out symbolism for the sake of symbolism because the director thought it was cool. This is true. But observing that fact does not remove the perfectly well thought out ideas in the series. Hideaki Anno came up with this during a darker part of his life, to add some context. A lot of his feelings and emotions were projected onto the characters. And honestly a lot of people can and have related to the fears and weaknesses of these flawed characters. Whether its Misato's attempt to balance her emotional side and logical side. Shinji trying to develop interpersonal relations but stops out of fear of rejection. Asuka trying to affirm her self worth desperately but doesn't want to seem weak so she maintains an abusive and selfish personality. Etc Etc. You see a common psychological theme here. I could go on. There is so much more to talk about regarding Akagi, the duality of science and spirituality, the nature of escapism as a prevailing theme, etc. But I just want to offer this modest example of the complexity of this series. So please don't dismiss it due to its infamous appeal for mindfuck and intentional habit of obscuring the truth in its narrative.

Scentist (in training) and big fullmetal fan here, something to add from personal experience. A lot of people are too scared of not knowing. That fear that if god isn't real then science is all-powerful and vice versa. The fear of not being sure is, I feel, what pushed people to blind acceptance rather than feeling out and slowly exploring our reality, like a person in a dark unfamiliar room. To extend the metaphor, people would often rather take large confident steps in any direction rather than admit they don't know where they are.
