I was in 3rd Grade when I first watched this anime, and god, I was traumatized for 11 years when I saw them cutting off Ichise's limbs. Mind you, I was eating breakfast at that time and this was aired on Animax 2003. By the time I was 17 or 18, finally got the guts to finish it. Yes, I'd also give it a 10/10 for everything. its very rare for an anime to engulf my emotions. By the end of the show, I was questioning life itself as well since it left me too damn depressed.

"And not by quoting philosophers, but by penetrating your mind." This was one of the problems I had with Psycho-Pass (though I did enjoy the series). Two characters in particular were quite fond of rattling off quote after quote from famous philosophers, but there wasn't enough exploration of the ideas contained within those quotes.

Spoilers: Texhnolyze's overall theme is not bleak, as hinted through allusions but made more obvious as the story progresses. Yes, you can point out the atmosphere and the the surface of what happens in each episode, but if you think Texhnolyze delivers an "everybody dies, the end" message, then frankly I think you should rewatch it. I don't mean to sound condescending but it's more clear and just as fun the second time around.

I've just finished this show, and I can safely say I dislike it! [Spoiler free review] Texhnolyze has many plotlines that do not fully get resolved, and doesn't make very good use of the promising and mysterious narrative elements it begins itself with. What begins as a surreal philosophical science fiction mystery devolves into a moody gangster 'drama' that has little redemption. The characters are written well, and the setting in which they play is interesting and original. I enjoyed the dark themes and how they are handled most of the time as well. But the 'villains,' if you will, have truly vapid motivations and offer nothing but chaos as a means to progress the plot. Chaos and decay are central themes in Texhnolyze, but all of its other themes are handled so much more smartly and serve its characters better. There are ultimately no answers as to _why_ things happen in Texhnolyze, in a grand sense, other than 'villains decided to do villainous things _because human nature.'_ As for my personal taste, while I was hooked by the surrealism and mystery during the first few episodes, I very slowly came to be bored and then frustrated with the show. I say frustrated, because while the narrative doesn't spiral out of control, it just gets not good after about halfway through the show; things still make enough sense for the ideas to remain cohesed, yet the ideas lose their light; the narrative doesn't become unenjoyable suddenly, but rather very gradually. I also found the ending rather unsatisfying, but I don't consider that to be a fault in the show's writing necessarily. I had a lot of hope for this show and Texhnolyze sets itself up so well, but slowly lost me by the end. I have seen some people compare this to Ergo Proxy, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and which delivered on its premises satisfactorily. I know I'm being negative, but I wanted to write out a negative review as fairly as possible without any spoilers.

Yoshii is using his "goals" of wanting to arouse and activate the spirits of the inhabitants of lux city in order to give raise to a new kind of human more driven and passionate, as a pretext to justify his rampage and instigation of a civil war, deep down this is him lashing out against the current state of stagnation, but also him managing to feel alive again, equating the joy he is feeling now with how things ought to be, and mistaking it for an ideal state of being Kano is a being of privilege with too much power, who believes to be the only real human in a world at his disposal that has submerged itself in rotting chaos, and is trying to submerge things into order as he envisions himself as the only one that is actually sentient, with everyone else just being an extinction of his mind, he sees himself as the fable voice of the city, not because he is a god, but because he is the only with a voice, the problem being that he is in a position that actually allows him to use others as tools and things, not because they are actually tools, but because his power and authority puts him in a position so high that other can be reduced to mere tools Finally the setting is a product of high social and economic inequality, extreme industrialization, ecological devastation, and hyper-dependence on technology, giving us as a result 2 worlds that have become codependent of each other, and that slowly rot away into oblivion, the surface who has become so stable with industrial order that it has stagnated and as such it may as well have died because change and growth is what living societies do, and Lux the titular city which has become so impoverished and submerged in the tension of the social struggle that it reached its own version of stagnation and as such has also died, and while that tension may paint a semblance of hope, an idea that maybe things can change for the better, the reality is that if the tension breaks so will the city, for the end result will be its parts cannibalizing each other The surface depends of Lux to maintain its existence by having a place to predate on and exploit the brute resources it needs to supply the lifestyle it created, while Lux depends of the Surface in order to validate the hierarchical powers that sustain the state of tension that keeps the city form collapsing onto itself, that fine balance that Onishi keeps talking about again and again through the series. Yoshii sees hope in breaking that tension in Lux, something that the surface lacks, and tries to do it with moderate success, however of course the end result is not a positive outcome, Kano on the other hand tries to eliminate the tension by bringing forth his own ideal of a world in which he becomes the only realized human, but that also fails, because without tension the city that was never really alive, but rather on life support, just collapses. And there you go, those are the motives of the villains and why they do villainous things, as well as the answer as to why things happen in Texhnolyze

Somehow its coherent to a place within me where everything itself is so true and clear, so perfectly understood that is somehow beautifull, because no uglines or beauty truly exists. It dosen't allow you to brace it with youre sanity, if you do so you will definitely end up confussed and won't be able to enjoy it the right way. Only with your subconsciousness and trought feelings and emphatizing you will be able to understand it. It's silent and dark, it uses little symboles, for it speaks directly to your heart. In that, it's truer than any other anime, and is a masterpiece of its own kind. Well, for me it's perfect, and I don't belive it to be simiular to Ergo Proxy. Ergo Proxy is one of the best pshological sci-fi along with Serial Experiments Lain, but that is that - it creates a world, it creates characters, and does it masterfully. Texhnolyze, on the other hand, comunicates to something that already existed in all of us, and does it trough the music that it is. Only other anime that made me feel remoltey simiular was Kino no Tabi.

Juicy Chad Because the second half was a flop. Completely messed up what it had set up in the beginning... Also, no need to answer the question, I'm currently watching Texhnolyze and am loving it. But yeah, first half was absolutely masterful, but after that it had some major pacing issues and plot holes. Also, the change in atmosphere did not help.

Max Cerrato Hard to explain. Mostly it comes down to subjective enjoyment. I really hated watching Ergo Proxy it was so boring and I couldn't stand any of the characters, Especially the little girl annoyed the fuck out of me. The story also felt really aimless and convoluted. Besides that I though the animation was actually quite bad which is weird if you know how good the first episode looks, but the rest of the show is really sloppy. All in all I never manged to watch more of it and gave up.

Quiestre It's the other way around for me :p. I don't hate Texhnolyze. Visually it's good, with some really great moments. Some directing choices were really pertinent and unsettling, like the first sex scene wich blew my mind, or some of the transitions. But I feel many aspects of the show could have been better. I really love EP's cast, but the only character in Texhnolyze that spiked my interest was Ran. She gets nearly no screen time, and my interest might come from the fact that she's pretty much a Lain copycat (silent psy girl with blank brown eyes and an animal disguise ?). Some people and even a faction were here mosty to fill the holes in the scenario and had pretty much no development, impact or screen time after playing their part. Also, I like the idea of having a nearly mute main character (I have no problem with Gordon Freeman for example, it works for me), but Ichise fails at interacting with other people wich makes him seriously frustrating, especially since he doesn't even stay a loner. The middle part of the show totally lost my interest because of that. The fights are making the whole show hard to believe. Incredibly plot-immune hero jumps in the middle of 20 armed guys and suddenly you see him close-up punching a serie of guys 1v1 with no background. Texhnolyze has the worst case of You are already dead I've seen with a character that talks for 30 seconds before his head separates from his body. Just when the show started to really spike my interest again, on top of that. In the end, I really have mixed feelings about Texhnolyze. Even if it doesn't raise much questions and is mostly dark for the sake of it, I think it coud have worked if the main character stayed next to Ran as a bodyguard/spectator, and believable fights.

Even though ergo proxy is so highly praised i could never really find what was so great about it apparently you really had to think about and do back-research on before you enjoyed it. I don't like that approach as researching the stuff is really annoying, although texhnolyze was self contained concepts were explored and could either be figured out from what was in the anime or without any prior back knowledge. Ergo proxy's plot, you can get the main idea which was pretty bland, but all the nitty gritty of it could only be discovered through back research, although in saying this there were 2 episodes in it which i think deserve a deserve the praise, the amusement park and the clone episode (where there was a re-l clone) as they were good self contained stories, it had a interesting artstyle and op/ed i'll give it that. Its funny that when i went out to buy ergo proxy due to all the praise i heard i ended up buying texhnolyze and serial experiments lain as well which i thought wouldn't be as good so i watched them first to get them out of the way but then ergo just couldn't compare, i really wanted to love it, but couldn't

I love shows like these, and I ended up not liking Texnolyze. I really loved its slow dismal pace and grim setting and story, plus a handful of heavy themes and symbolic artistic strengths. Then they got to the surface and the class and I found it to be really immersion breaking and thought it was trying to be too artsy for its own good. I liked what they were aiming to do, and I liked the themes given by the conclusion, but the last 4 episodes seemed like a train wreck to me.

Ergo proxy is hipster Shounen, empty fluff desperately posing as intellectual and edgy. Aside from the thematic overlap of nihilistic tendencies it has literally nothing in common with Texhnolyze. I also disagree on your opinion that Ichise is becoming less human as the series progresses. quite to the contrary I feel the whole purpose of his arc is learning to become human. He goes from a caged animal turned stray dog to introspecting on and confronting his past, his sense of self and his future.

I don't think Ergo Proxy is shounen in any possible way, but I have to agree that Texhnolyze is on a completely different level and a lot more deeper. I think Ergo Proxy is just an average good show, with some interesting ideas behind and a couple of very well done episodes. Texhnolyze is a true masterpiece.

imagine the outer world is ergo proxy’s world, that the only original human left is living in lux (primitif and conservative) and space (evolutionaire and liberalist). the holographic town is a leftover of desperate human, and the rest of the humanity is fled to the space, and lux is remain unknown. when ichise finally left alone (ending of texhnolyze), he wonder outside and discover a small village living in outer dome and then met vincent law and pino after he jumped from the dome, and so the adventure begin (to prove that ran’s vision is untrue, because no one should be able to see the future lol). just imagine, how great it would be. one thing, i still annoyed by the proxy model, i still think they’re should be lookin like a half-robot and half-human unlike isekai monster hehehe

Ergo Proxy is a very pretentious show that's needlessly self indulgent with its dialogue. Tehxnolyze is better but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece. It takes too long for the plot to get moving.

gilgamesh310 I wouldn't call Ergo Proxy pretentious at all. Tehxnolyze is meant to be dark, grim and uncomfortable. That's why the story is slow.

I felt lines like "It is not I think therefore I am but I think therefore you are" and whole episodes being devoted to Disney based characters, which the creator no doubt doesn't understand properly and game shows as a means of dumping exposition on us is pretty pretentious stuff.

mohamed joestar Sure. I'm not influenced by any 4chan opinions. The show is pretentious because it purports to be more than it is.
