The manga is better in some ways; the fired worker is actually a drug addict refusing rehab on the company's dime. Further Tanya is less 'brutal rational efficiency' and more 'traumatised from brutality of war and desperately trying to Do This Right so they get shifted to a rear echelon desk job'. The anime definitely makes Tanya more of an unrepentant psycho.

The funny thing is that the manga was not liked by the author for its artwork and it got lukewarm reception among the Japanese fandom, with a common review saying the animal art seemed suspiciously like attempts to be lazy. Both the author and much of the Japanese LN fans prefer both the LN and the anime to the manga. The author warmed up the manga not because he felt it got better, but because he saw the English sales and he gets a royalty.

The anime is honestly really good the protagonist is ruthless, but hates being on the front line yet puts out info and actions that keep her there. She is 100% by the book and generally doesn’t do anything you’d consider wrong yet she’s hated by a lot of people because their mindset is small compared to hers. To me the being X isn’t even a needed part of the story but adds some entertainment to the whole thing.

6:30 I've always found it most interesting that whenever everyone comments on Tanya using a childlike voice to convince the factory workers that it was a prank, she gets increasingly angry with them, which implies she literally didn't think of doing that at all and accidentally slipped into a more natural speaking voice for the announcement, probably seeing it more as a boring activity like filing paperwork then a chance for legitimate manipulation and strategy.

Not only that, but she's the one insisting on giving them fair warning (and in the manga, they wait a while half an hour before destroying the factory, just to allow for the offered evacuation). Her troops were the ones who wanted to simply attack without warning, as they saw issuing a warning to be a poor tactic, even if it's technically required by international law. She trained them like modern day Navy SEALs, even if most of her info was obtained through video games and movies. Such arduous training partnered with the "war is glorious" mindset of early WW1 means her soldiers _think_ they've been purpose-built for "screw the rules, we're gonna win!" tactics.

Armor is also a thing, but a human really shouldn’t have the kind of power on hand as the ground forces usually. Going Higher also isn’t always better, as the air would be thinner (requiring heavy equipment to maintain consciousness) and the friction of the air on your projectile would likely reduce their speed dramatically, causing the targets to hit with low velocity rounds, or be harder to hit due to your limited range. Accuracy would also be next to impossible for a human at greater ranges, especially due to the numerous factors that impair a human at range (limited vision, hands shaking slightly, inability to fire at the same point twice, inability to do the math required to predict the bullet’s trajectory, difficulty accounting improving accuracy when an attack misses and calculations are needed to adjust aim, basically all the wind factors between them and the targets, etc..)

WW1 is an underused setting with a cool style, let's use that. 2. The VFX artists want to flex so let's have magic. 3. From the video, the technology does not seem to be WW1 era, but WW2 era. Which means that the protagonists are all Nazi-Era Germany rather than Imperial Germany, which is certainly an interesting choice to make protagonists.

@@glenbe4026 it’s actually pre-World War Two tech. They have tank tech from the early 1930s, with ideologies and strategies from the Great War, the borders similar to the Great War. So it’s more like there was no Great War in the late 1910s, but instead it wasn’t triggered until late 1920s, by which point the communists in their version of Russia have already revolted, the USA is still isolationist, France is still trying to spread its republic ideas, Germany having their monarchy and Britain being Britain in the background. It’s a very interesting and fascinating choice because you can have freedoms to show certain tactical decisions from Tanya making her seem like a military genius when all she is doing is regurgitating the info from real world history

tbf these people back then were capable of incredible cruelty and brutality. Factories beating children and women, protestors being hung, military troops routinely shooting their own countrymen. Even the weapons of war were being designed to chew up people, tanks killed their operators more than they did the enemy, battleships were chocked full of people outside the armor, being shredded by massive guns. their command structure seeing men more as numbers and toy soldiers to be moved, consumed, and replaced.

This anime is good but the LN is a masterpiece. In the end you have the feeling that Tanya and her unit (the Salamanders) are fighting the world alone and win. In manga and LN Tanya is not nearly as ruthless and psychotic as she is anime. She is still an hardass and the comedy of misunderstandings is there, but she is way more humane and have actual friends and care about her men. They simplified her character in anime (and made her and Visha ugly as well). Of and BTW I usually do not read fanfiction but there is an masterpiece called 'A Young Woman's Political Record' about Tanya fate after the lost war and how she tried her hand in politics and unwillingly become a beloved Fuhrer.

I remember when I first heard of the series, I naturally just assumed the reason she was a child was so that she could be drawn young like the average high school aged anime protag when she becomes Kanzlerin and leads Not-Germany into pseudo-WWII. This video misses out on the most important parts of the anime, the character's personality. Tanya is a ruthless strategist type character, that just so happens to agree with the efficiency of a certain austrian. Although Tanya may seem to be incredibly ruthless and opportunistic, she does care about those around her and perfectly gives them a perfect solution to their issues. She acts kind, only when there is enough leeway to do so. The anime portrays Tanya to be a strict but pure evil character at the start, and slowly spins the narrative around to make the Higher authorities (in every sense) to be the most absolute evil one could be. From Military executives being complacent and drunk off the victory of their men, thus allowing a world war to occur, to the unrelenting evil that is being X, which goes to any length in order to put Tanya through true hell. Mary Sue, is a term for characters who are ridiculously perfect, to the point of being able to destroy an entire story and make it far too unrealistic. That being said, the character in A little girl's war, Mary Sue, is an incredibly perfect character to be the antagonist. Born with everything, and obtaining everything needed, she became a true 'mary sue' to fulfill being X's goal. She is portrayed exactly like a 'mary sue', yet she was driven by revenge. A perfect character, unfit for storytelling, became imperfect through the meddling of being X, and became a character fit for storytelling, not as a protagonist, but as an antagonist fueled by revenge.

Actually, there are different types of Isekai. Like being transported directly. Or being reborn. Or possessing the body of someone who should have died. There are those were the original memories of the body are lost. There are those where they are merged. There's reverse isekai like Devil is a part-timer. Or a mix of normal and reverse like Arata Kangatari. Isekai is about a person (or group of people) from one world and goes to another world. Some people even consider Sword Art Online as Isekai, because they consider the VR world as another world.

For instance they magic she uses only works when she prays and another thing later on when the General staff is organizing the mage assault battalion her profile has the words Deus Vult on it which helps her get noticed.

@Why 01 it's a mix. The war starts in the interwar period with ww1 never happening. The empire is the ww1 era central powers but Russia is comunist and you have explicitly fantasy versions of Churchill, Charles degaul, stalin and the Russian NKVD head whose name escapes me all ww2 era figures plus Romel is present as the imperial general in charge of the African campaign that gets glossed over in 40 seconds during the movie. Well the early light novels are clearly ww1 era trench warfare and ww1 era tanks and weapons (in the light novel the anime just uses the later tanks from the start) duirng the later books you see the more modren weapons with Tanya commenting how due to advances in tech mages can no longer reliably punch past tank armor or match planes like they used to. You also see the V series of weapons, which are WW2, even though they both got changed extensively. The Author is clearly drawing on both world wars, saying it's one or two specifically or is wrong

My personal favorite aspect of this anime-is the ideological dichotomy between her "past" life as a supervisor & Tanya. The former is a fervent and pragmatic, Rightist Libertarian type who applies his free market principles to the neoliberal economic framework accordingly to maximize on the success of his company whereas, the latter appears slightly different on the surface level via, not only engaging in offensive warfare, but: also fighting alongside a past, centralised and totalitarianist governing body (two facets that contradict libertarianism) although her competency as a war strategist aligns with the aforementioned pragmatism of her previous identity. Although, the behaviors, beliefs and actions of both are purely attributed to environment, the supervisor either grew up in an authoritarian and overly religious household or has a negative past experience with the state infringing on one of his earlier startups as a businessman hence his right libertarian, and atheist views. Tanya's actions are majorly attributed to her lack of a parental role model or authoritative figure plus her lack of financial self-reliance or employment, thus resulting in her lacking any guidance or meaning and her being groomed by a fāscist regime with the promise of attaining the aforementioned validation, the show also explores a social difference between men and women, our supervisor seeks personal self reliance, Tanya seeks a social/financial "safety net".

I think it’s hilarious that ‘Being X’ technically looses, and doesn’t even realize it. By influencing the scientist the creat an unstable magic drive, then Forcing Tanya to pray or die. X, effectively looses, as it wanted her to break down and accept his authority as God. He exercised his control, but failed his ultimate goal. It’s like people with authority who Demand respect and Will abuse that authority to punish those who do not. They are Shown respect, but they are Not Respected.

If you now include the fact that child-mage-soldiers were rare, but not thaaat uncommon then you should 100% heed the warning. Much as I love this Anime, the way that they skipped over half of what happened in the Manga to a degree that Tanya's personality in the Manga is radically diffrent from that in the Anime (alongside with the fact that they decided to have The Main Character [Tanya] and the main supporting Character [Victorya] be the only characters IN THE ENTIRE SHOW to have that weird facial animation), along with other issues like the fact that we never really see Tanya apply her 21st century knowledge to her advantage, is something I hope that they will do better in Season 2.

This anime sounds equal parts incredible and terrifying. Incredible because of its gorgeous art style and enthralling story based on actual history, terrifying because the protagonist is the vessel for committing all of the worst acts in military history in the name of victory. It's the sort of thing where I'd love to watch it someday, but only if I know for a fact that the main character will get what's coming for her in the end.

Horrific war strategies written by Tanya are hypotheticals based off of efficiency and real world parallels. They were never meant to be implemented but are under orders of her incompetent superiors and through her due to her being the most qualified and only battalion able to carry it out. In fact in the series, it is not above other nations to try to replicate her plays and ultimately failing because they do not understand the intricacies and flaws of the strategy and why they succeeded in the first place. You can only use a tactic successfully once because afterwards countermeasures will start to be implemented. In this specific case, the other nations are not entirely guiltless either. With the Empire just wanting to maintain its borders and expanding only in retaliation to invasions. While other nations plotting to instigate the war in hopes of dividing the empire’s vast territories. In terms of you wanting the villainous pseudo nazi protagonist getting its comeuppance. It is revealed in the manga and in turn the original light novel. That despite the many victories and horrific war crimes(not war crimes because no prior laws were ever preestablished and this is the first of its kind) that the Empire will eventually lose this war with all records of the protagonist’s existence redacted. Tanya even knows despite the Empire’s superior military, that if the war is to escalate into a real world war, that her nation is doomed to fall just due to pure quantity of enemy nations. But again this is the story of a overly competent subordinate who wants a peaceful life and her overly incompetent superiors that puts her into the frontlines and mistaken her rational and logical mind for malice and evil.

@Vurrunna I wouldn't say she is an evil character. She states many times her hatred of war, her hatred of the loss of human life, and her strong desire to be ANYWHERE save for the front lines. The 'get what's coming to her' comment is intresting because that's exatly what Mary Sue (the daughter shown at the end) believes. That Tanya is a devil who killed her father, and The Entire empire is Evil. She chooses to ignore the fact that her own country started the war, and Tanya was only doing her job.

Stuff like purposefully masking her voice when she warns the factory of their attack in order to ensure that civilian workers don't evacuate the premises, allowing them to deal a harder blow to their enemy's production capabilities. Cold and tactical, and also _incredibly_ amoral. Essentially, going off of this video's representation of her, she's evil in everything but name. She's only seeking the most efficient means to wage warfare, sure, but in the process, she abandons all morality and basic human empathy. Keep in mind, just because her empire is under attack doesn't absolve her all wrongdoing. As a sidenote, while I don't know the specifics from the show itself, it seems clear that the reason the Entente even attacked the Empire in the first place was not from a desire to conquer territory, but more a reaction to the Empire's unparalleled growth, as they now control vast swathes of Europe--this would suggest that, while the Entente technically started the war, it comes across more as a preventative war to stop the Empire expanding and conquering everything. The Empire's pursuant use of unethical tactics would only serve to cement the Entente's perception of the Empire as evil, meaning that, in a twisted way, Tanya's probably done more to ensure the war's continuance than anyone else, since she's proven them to be not only a military threat, but a moral threat. Her relentless war tactics are also likely to result in the enemy feeling no compunction whatsoever in releasing the same tactics upon the Empire, once they figure it out on their own rather than clumsily copying the Empire. Basically, Tanya may not perform her duties with any malice, but that doesn't excuse her actions, nor does it justify the Empire that's so willing to put her tactics into practice. The Empire are undoubtedly the bad guys here, displayed by their ruthless desire to conquer more and do whatever it takes to attain victory. Like I said though, I think this kind of story can be truly fascinating, so long as it doesn't end in some unequivocal victory for the Empire. Tanya's a war criminal, no doubt about it, and a world where the Empire wins is a world where the rules of war are left much more horrifying than what we already have. I'm not even saying she has to die or suffer or anything, I just think it'd be great to see her go to trial and try to justify her actions to a court that doesn't give a damn how logical her actions were given how unethical they were. It would also make for a good resolution on a narrative level, showing that no, you _can't_ get by being that cold and heartless. Just like a disgruntled employee threw him in front of a bus, this world will also punish him if he doesn't learn from his mistakes. Otherwise, if Tanya gets away scot free, it essentially validates the idea of "Yes, screw everyone else, do things the cold and efficient way with zero regard for human life." Anywho, that turned into a bit of a rant. I think I'll leave it at that before I write another few paragraphs. Cheers.

She did it for a multiple of factors. Number one, was to not ruin her surprise advantage, if she gave a 'real' warning, then not only would they evacuate the factory, but the city would also mount a defense. Which would not only mean they might miss their chance to hit the factory, but she's also put in danger the lives of herself and the 47 soilders and comrades she's in charge of keeping alive. And further along that, hitting that factory ENDED the war. On the scale she killed perhaps 300 to save 300,000 in a long drawn out conflict. That doesn't make it a 'good' thing by any means, but its not an evil one. You called her out for being 'amoral' but that is exactly what she is, amoral. True netural. Not moral, or immoral. Nothing in this video, or in the show, or in the mange, or in the LN show her as being evil. They show her as someone forced into a job she does not want, but as someone who does their job well whatever it may be. She bombed a factory of workers? Well see above. She helped destroy the city of Arene? She tried to wiggle out of her orders by instead saving the Empire soilders captured, but said prisoners were killed by the occupants of the city. And the empire destroyed the city because they were wrecking havoc on supply lines. You could also blame the republic themselves for the massacre. They were using the people of the city as human shield, thinking that the Empire wouldnt attack the people in the city. That bluff was called. No you are wrong. The attack from the Entente alliance was purely politics, nationalism, and perhaps the work of being X. In the light novel there is even a section from Anson Sue (the guy Tanya has the bos battle with at the end) cursing their leaders for doing this mentally, but being forced to follow orders. Further on in the story, even the Entente's own allies and the people fighting 'with' them in the war, despise them for the attack that started the world war. As for the other nations, some are influenced by Being X, some are due to The empire's shitty diplomatic skills, but yes some are for the very reason you describe. Fear of the Empire's growth, Tanya even remarks on this at the very end. The Empire, never ONCE declares war on ANY other nation, yet because the whole declares war on them, in the name of peace, they must fight. And the whole world fears The Empire from becoming a new great power in the world and taking the world over, so in the name of peace, they wage war. Just saying 'oh the empire and Tanya are the bad guys, end of story' is just so.. ugh. I'm sorry you are just so close to the way of thinking of one of the stories main antagonists (mary sue, yes that's her real name) makes quick snap judgments based on emotions, not facts, and refuses to accept anything save the Empire is evil. I'm not trying to insult you, but the only real argument against your points is for you to sit down and watch/read the story yourself. If Tanya goes to trial, she will not be punished. Ever. She goes to GREAT lengths to ensure every little thing she does is legal. There is no arguements or questions here. Yes she states she has to attitude anything that is in a 'gray' zone I consider white. But she has never put a single pinky toe in the realm of black, there is nothing she's done that can be called illeagal. Even the attack on the city full of people, it's legal.

The rules against "human atrocities" basically exist to prolong war as much as possible for the greed of companies that make their money off of it. That's the immoral thing here. "You can't use X in war, it's immoral!" But... wouldn't it end the war VERY QUICKLY? Sure, it sucks for the victims... but there will be LESS victims and LESS strife if it is used, correct? Historically, "honor" in a fight gets you killed. It's a stupid thing to be beholden to. If you adhere to it, you are at a disadvantage. You win wars by destroying the enemy's ability to wage war. You do this as quickly as possible by targeting civilians (supply lines... which also puts pressure on the government to surrender if the civilians are targeted and can't be defended), targeting military bases, using tactics to MAIM soldiers rather than KILL them (drains the coffers!), and taking as many strategic points as possible with as few losses as possible. War is a terrible, brutal, horrible thing. This is why it must be ended as quickly as possible. Prolonged wars in which the enemy gets to maintain their ideologies, ability to wage war, and their malice of their population against you are stupid things. You do not let these stand. You invite further war and conflict and action against you if you let ANY of these stand. The only reason "war crimes" even truly exist is so that profiteering can be done by businesses invested in prolonging that war as long as possible.

So because the being demands faith, it is not god, but some otherworldly being.
