Featured is an excellent game from Round 2 of the 2023 Tata Steel Masters Chess Tournament between Anish Giri and D. Gukesh. The opening is a Queen’s Gambit Declined, Ragozin Defense where Giri gives Gukesh the bishop pair. In exchange for this Giri seeks dynamic play on the kingside which is kickstarted by a queen rook lift. After Gukesh’s 17th move, Giri unleashed a tactical sequence that reminded me of the great Mikhail Tal.

Its so beautiful how chess can generate hours upon hours of content on this channel, with a single game giving eighteen minutes of careful analysis of strategy, tactics, alternate moves, etc. Good stuff.

Only feedback I have to an otherwise great video would be to, in some way, flash the board at the end when mentioning the blundering moves in the tale of the tape. At least for those of us who have yet to develop that memory for whole-board recall.

10:42 That Nf6 continuation is pretty cool. It gives me a lot of appreciation for Giri's play. It's a position where you'd probably see the solution quickly if it was presented as a chess puzzle, but it would be much harder to see during the game, one of those lines where my brain would want to short-circuit it away as untenable... and abandon the entire winning line. Sometimes the tactics that don't appear on the board are just as pleasing as the ones that do!

the visualization required for giri to see this is crazy. At any possible moment there could be all sorts of sacrifices to save Gukesh with the rook or minor piece and giri would have to see that the three pieces vs queen is winning.

Subscriber count says nothing about how much a video will be viewed (and according to the CEO activity doesn't either). I'm not sure how this videos view count will differ from his other recent uploads, but I suspect not so much.

17:15 hmm what about knight C6, if queen captures the rook, then ND8? Queen is somewhat short on squares and have to waste at least one move to get back to the game while black can make use of the second rank with the rook + bishop.

Black can just play nc6, and it is two bishops and two minor pieces that are well coordinated and defend from all of the nasty mates, against one queen and one rook. Winning material advantage.
