I met Anita back in the 70's at her husband's recording studio in Miami. Bobby Dukoff Recording. Boby was my recording teacher. He was a master !! Anita was such a sweetheart. A Lady. They had a beautiful daughter, Dee. I lesrned so much at that studio, where my recording career was launched. 🙏❤️🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️

A talent supreme. Anita, June Christy and Chris Connor were all fans of each other's music and recorded many of the same songs. The public generally lumped them together but in reality their vocal equipment, interpretative style and talents were quite different, and it was when the recorded the same songs that truth clearly emerged. All three were Midwestern girls and that showed in the personalities of all three, very wonderful ladies in every way.

Fantastic up-tempo arrangement on this. O'Day is not only terrific to listen to, she is also incredibly watchable.

There are still some of us who are alive who knew her personally and dug her throughout all the ups and downs of the wonderfully hip Anita. The midwestern sound is evident in her voice, the voices of Irene Kral, June Christy, Chris Connor, etc. I am glad I had the opportunities to hear and hang out with the great jazz performers/musicians from the great era. I hope many younger folks will come to love the treasure trove of jazz and preserve it and continue creating.

I met her first in Incline Village, Lake Tahoe in late 1964 at the Lake Tahoe Hotel and Casino, now a Hyatt Hotel. It was a beautiful setting right on the lakeshore and Kirk Stewart was playing piano, Allen Jackson on bass and George Hughes on drums. That trio had just finished working with Sass and were on their way to various destinations. There was Anita and John Poole. I saw and hung with her many times after that. She was so hip and kind to me, a younger singer. I also saw Allen Jackson many times in Los Angeles in later years after I moved there. He was a busy bassist as well. I booked entertainment for a Studio City jazz club and Anita was one of the people hired there as well as Helen Merrill, Lorez Alexandria and other great singers and musicians. Benny Golson with Roy McCurdy were regulars as were Victor Feldman, Monty Budwig, Jimmy Rowles, Donald Bailey, Colin Bailey and others. It was a great gig. i even talked Dexter Gordon into playing a night there. I knew and worked with Dex in Europe and he played at the club in Studio City. It was a great time. Blue Mitchell as well as Warne Marsh and Buddy Collette played in that club as well.

Gene Corrado I knew her story because she was a friend. That friendship does not mean I had to share the drug addiction but could appreciate her musical insight and enjoyed hanging with her. She was a great singer in the jazz genre. I had many friends who were former junkies and who were wonderful artists. Whatever their pain was, the drugs likely were self-medication. Alcohol served that purpose for others. She was a joy to listen to musically speaking.

Just about everything she recorded is available digitally from iTunes or Amazon, so no you don't need to go vinyl. There are hundreds of redundant bootleg reissues out there, so be cautious before you buy. Her classic recordings were for Verve Records in 1954-62, and these were collected in a box set by Mosaic. I have seen the same tracks in a free torrent and in a cheap, legal bootleg. Happy hunting!
