Carolina Garcia ironically enough I'm a german exchange student in the US and was only able to find friends because I'm very (and I mean veryyy) outgoing :'D, It also has a lot to do with the school you go to, I remember back in Germany I always loved having exchange students around and becoming friends with them and learn some things from them while also helping them learn :) It's just really different from school to school and also class to class, I don't think it's a stereotype kinda thing for every country :)

I think the problem is that exchange students in the U.S. can mostly speak English and that's why they make friends (maybe faster). While exchange students in other countries can't speak the native language so that's harder. Anyways I had a Russian exchange student at my German school and she was really welcomed and everything, but people here (teenagers)are mostly very shy to speak English.
