Regarding merge communication, I think the two players should each keep their own battle cards so they can slide them to each other and make recommendations and confer.
@BoardDownUnder3 жыл бұрын
I have seen this house rule mentioned and I do like it, for sure. It helps without having to point and such - I often find I want to elaborate though. Like "I think we should play X here because we might want Y in our next region" as opposed to just "I think we should play X". In one particularly frantic game my ally same i ended up leaving the room to discuss stuff!! But that obviously grinds down the speed of the game so it's not a recommended solution, haha

So this is how we play: The players of the merged gods always sit together (moving seats if necessary) and take single action turns back to back, (turn order proceeds as if there's only 1 main player) however they loses the ability to take the same action back to back if: 1. They no longer score last on the track 2. They are less than 7 points behind the leader. They can still take bottom then top action in this case. Solves all the problems at all player counts
@MattCrawley_Music3 жыл бұрын
You are right about the merge - players need to prepare for it. I think a lot of people just play as well as they can up to the 3rd conflict without considering it. Have you played games without the merge? How was it?
@BoardDownUnder3 жыл бұрын
We have, and in our experience it plays out exactly as you would expect! Nothing really changes - the game just carries on. In a tight game it might be more impactful because the lower players might have a chance to take the lead, but haven't experienced this scenario ourselves to comment there. This is why I like the merge - it shifts the game and adds a new variable at that point!
@MattCrawley_Music3 жыл бұрын
@@BoardDownUnder that’s good to know. I used the merge once in a 3 player. The merged players lost considerably. But had a lot of fun, and the unmerged god was extremely nervous of us, especially being able to do whatever actions we wanted.

Guys, superb video and review, i wasn't expecting such production value, i really like the order and the topics of the review that give this overview / deep knowledge of the game even for people like me that are still waiting for our first game, also for a "serious review" the few jokes really landed for me. Keep the good work!!

I liked Miss' open-minded attitude towards the merge mechanic even if she ended up disliking it. I am always on the lookout for new things and I haven't even played a lot of games, and so it's always funny to see those reviewers who approach new mechanics with pessimism - if anything it should be the opposite! I also like that it seems you guys have played the game a good many times. I like reviews where this comes across because as you mentioned, games like this one in particular are expensive and so prospective buyers are going to want to get a lot of plays in as well.

Thanks very much, I did have really high hopes for the merge which potentially added to my disappointment with it!

I belive the Merge works verry well in 4+ players games, but its awful in a 3 players game. I agree with the sitting position. We play like that as a house rule. The lower god moves to be right after the right one. That way they can comunicate cards by showing and poiting, instead of saying its name. And they always make their two actions in a row.

Loved seeing the dialogue between a couple that enjoys playing together but both have unique perspectives. I enjoyed the corny jokes. Also, most importantly, you gave me a lot to think about whether this game is for me and my family or not. I ordered the all-in pledge and while it is shipping trying to determine if this game will be a hit. Still not sure though.
@BoardDownUnder3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the positive feedback! Glad the jokes were on the "good" side of corny. Sometimes the line of 'flat out lame' and 'funny lame' get blurred for me, haha. ;) If you want to elaborate on what areas of the game you might have concerns with, we might be able to shed a little more light on those areas for you?
@yankeejer3 жыл бұрын
@@BoardDownUnder Hi there. Thanks for your reply. I think I am going to love the game. But I am not sure about my wife and kids. They surprisingly loved Blood Rage. Surprisingly, because there are no other games we have similar to Blood Rage that they enjoy. I am just not sure if I can get them past the learning point where they learn the fun strategies that can be employed. I am wondering what difference the pharoah expansion adds, as this might be something that draws them in.
@BoardDownUnder3 жыл бұрын
@@yankeejer Unfortunately we didn't pick up either the pantheon or pharaoh expansion, so that is definitely something I can't comment on. I can say that I've introduced friends to this that haven't been strategy gamers, and they have enjoyed the experience. The game itself is streamlined enough that I think most can "just play and have fun" without worrying about strategy. It's harder to do that if one or two in the group know the game and have learnt some strategy, but if your family is primarily playing the game together there's a fair chance they'll learn together and be over similar skill level, which is where this game shines. You could hedge your bet and just peel open the core game for 1 or 2 plays and see if they enjoy it. The resale value you have on the unopened expansions will still be high, you might just lose some $ on the opened core box if it's a miss for them

Thanks for the review. I'm about to play 4 or 5 player game this week and I was thinking about the Guardians 'problem'. Do you think it would work if you'd fill up Tier 2 with different level 1 Guardians and Tier 3 with level 2 Guardians, up to the number of players? So for instance at 4 players, Tier 2 would be supplemented with 2 level 1 Guardians? That way you're not too harshly punished if you're late to the party and it adds more cool dynamics to the game. Would that work?
@BoardDownUnder3 жыл бұрын
This is really interesting!! We don't mind the game how it is, and tend to play without house rules as such just because I like to think the designers have done a better job than we would, haha. But we might actually give this a crack just to see how it feels. One issue is in a higher player game you would actually run out of figurines, so you either need a completely different guardian at that point or a substitute figure. Either way it sounds like something to try!
@OrdemDoGraveto2 жыл бұрын
We house rule It so that ONE copy of EVERY Guardian is available in the game. Less variety between playthrous, but nobody ever get without a Guardian. And nobody has the same Guardian, so they feel more special when you get then hehe

Really enjoyed this review and, tbh, I think I'd much rather you folks called it 'long overdue' but have actually really played it (as you clearly have) rather than do a quick unboxing, run through the intro scenario and then chuck a near meaningless review up!!!! It's clear you've played it a bunch of times and have explored a lot of what the game has to offer (just a shame you haven't got any of the KS extras to have a go at).
